Abstract

Anemia in pregnancy is one of the priority nutritional problems to be tended to. WHO in 2019 reported Anemia in 40% of pregnant women worldwide; in Indonesia, based on the 2018 Riskesdas was 48.9%, and in West Sumatra and Padang City, 18.10% and 17.70%. One of the causes of Anemia was a low intake of vitamins B12 and E. This study aimed to determine if serum ferritin levels and vitamin B12 and E consumption were correlated with those of third-trimester pregnant women. This analytical cross-sectional study was done from April to July 2022 at Lubuk Kilangan Public Health Center and Andalas University's Biomedical Laboratory. The population was 64 third-trimester pregnant women, and 42 samples were used using proportional stratified random and simple random sampling. A SQ-FFQ (Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire) and Human ferritin kit DBC (Diagnostics Biochem Canada) examined by ELISA (Enzymed-Linked Immunosorbent Assays) were the instruments. The average of Vitamin B12 and vitamin E consumption daily was 7.71 µg and 5.87 mg, and serum ferritin was 10.53 µg/L. Serum ferritin levels were linked with vitamin B12 (r=0.879; p=0.001) and vitamin E (r=0.455; p=0.002) intake. Enough intake of vitamin B12 and vitamin E will lead to ideal serum ferritin levels.

Abstract

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) still poses a health concern in Indonesia, including in Tarakan, some cases are caused by infections and diarrhea. Exclusive breastfeeding can help prevent these conditions in infants. The extent of this practice can be observed through exclusive breastfeeding coverage in the community. Limited maternal understanding of the advantages of breastfeeding for both the baby and the mother is frequently linked to low coverage. One effective strategy to address this issue is providing structured and effective education. This activity aimed to improve pregnant women’s understanding of exclusive breastfeeding. It was conducted on August 23, 2024, at the home of a community health volunteer in Juata Laut Subdistrict, North Tarakan. The method was a lecture combined with a health education approach and was attended by seven pregnant women and held alongside a routine antenatal class. The assessment instrument used was a 15-item questionnaire on exclusive breastfeeding, with a validity score of 0.973. Three stages made up the activity: preparation, carrying out the activity, and post-test evaluation. Results showed that 5 out of 7 participants (71%) had good knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding. However, 4 participants (57%) believed that breastfeeding leads to weight gain, 1 participant (14%) did not recognize its role in preventing breast cancer, and 5 participants (71%) were unaware of its contraceptive function. Health education proved effective in increasing knowledge, though continued and comprehensive efforts during pregnancy are needed to support optimal breastfeeding practices.

Abstract

Introduction: People widely consume soft drinks due to their easy accessibility and delightful taste, without realising the impact on the tooth surface. Enamel dissolves easily due to acidic products that contact acid, a chemical demineralisation process (dental erosion). This study aimed to analyse the comparison between carbonated and fruit-based soft drinks effect on calcium release from enamel surface of extracted permanent teeth. Methods: In-vitro study with a time-series design was conducted on the population of extracted premolars taken from a private dental clinic and orthodontics clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan. The sample was obtained using the pairwise difference hypothesis test formula. The samples were 24 pieces divided into two treatment groups by immersing in carbonated drinks and fruit-based soft drinks for 5 to 60 minutes. The statistical test used was the independent t-test and generalised linear model-repeated measures (GLM-RM). Results: The calcium level after immersion in the carbonated drink at the fifth minute was 0.476±0.397 mg/L, then increased significantly at the sixtieth minute to 3.058±0.811 mg/L (p=0.001). In the fruit-based soft drinks immersion group, the dissolved calcium at the fifth minute was 0.671±0.208 mg/L, then increased significantly to 2.258±1.351 mg/L (p-value=0.028). Neither carbonated drinks nor fruit-based soft drinks showed a significant effect on the levels of dissolved calcium (p-value=0.135). Conclusion: In the fifth minutes of immersion, fruit-based soft drinks caused higher calcium release level compared to carbonated soft drinks. In contrast, in the sixtieth-minutes of immersion, the calcium release is found to be higher in the carbonated soft drinks group.

Effect of gargling with lemon juice on the reduction of halitosis scores in high school students: a clinical experimental studyIntroduction: Halitosis is a general term used to describe the condition of unpleasant breath odor originating from the oral cavity, which can affect an individual’s health and social life. One of the most common treatments for halitosis is the use of mouthwash. Lemon (Citrus limon) has long been known for its medicinal properties and use as a beverage ingredient and flavoring agent due to its antibacterial and antioxidant activities. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of gargling with lemon juice in reducing halitosis scores. Method: This clinical experimental study used a pre- and post-test control group design involving 30 subjects divided into two groups: the lemon juice group and betadine mouthwash group. Halitosis scores were measured using the Tanita breath checker, a palm-sized monitor that detects and measures volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) by displaying a halitosis score. Measurements were conducted before and after gargling on day one and day seven. Results: There was a significant decrease in halitosis scores in the lemon juice gargle group, before treatment 4.13 ± 0.63, after the first day 3.06 ± 0.70 and after the seventh day 0.60 ± 0.50. Similarly, in the betadine mouthwash group, halitosis scores were 3.86 ± 0.74 before treatment, 2.80 ± 0.67 after the first day and 0.80 ± 0.56 after the seventh day. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference (p>0.05) between the changes in halitosis scores in the two groups. Conclusion: Gargling with lemon juice is as effective as betadine mouthwash in reducing halitosis problems.
