Abstract

Creativity in problem-solving needs to be strengthened through a systematic thinking framework. This study aims to explore students' creative thinking patterns in solving mathematics problems based on computational thinking (CT). A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving three junior high school students in West Bandung Regency representing high, medium, and low levels of mathematical ability. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and essay test focusing on four elements of CT (decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking) and four indicators of creative thinking (fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration). The results revealed High-ability students demonstrated strong integration between CT and conceptual creativity. Medium-ability students exhibited strategic flexibility, although their symbolic representations were not yet stable. In contrast, low-ability students tended to rely on procedural approaches. This study confirms that CT can function as a systematic thinking framework to foster creativity in 21st-century mathematics learning. It also contributes theoretically to understanding the dynamic relationship between CT and mathematical creative thinking and practically to the design of pattern-based tasks that stimulate student creativity.

Abstract

This study examines the creative thinking abilities of mathematics student teachers in solving geometry problems, analyzed through the lens of Adversity Quotient (AQ). The participants, categorized as climbers, campers, and quitters, displayed varying levels of creative thinking based on three indicators: fluency, flexibility, and novelty. Climber students achieved fluency and flexibility by producing multiple logos using two different methods but lacked novelty as their approaches relied on existing methods. Campers demonstrated flexibility by using two distinct approaches but failed to meet fluency and novelty criteria. Quitters only met the fluency indicator and were at the less creative level. None of the subjects fulfilled the originality indicator, highlighting a critical gap in creative thinking skills among the participants. These findings underline the importance of fostering creative thinking in mathematics education, especially for student teachers who will later nurture such skills in their students. Enhancing the quality of mathematics instruction by incorporating open-ended problems and promoting a culture of mathematical thinking is essential. This aligns with the educational aim to balance analytical and creative thinking as fundamental aspects of problem-solving in mathematics.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the critical thinking process of students with Field-Independent (FI) and Field-Dependent (FD) cognitive styles when they solved the Two-Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV) problem, which is based on the Polya step and the Facione critical thinking indicator. This research is qualitative descriptive. The instruments in this study are the GEFT Test, the SPLDV problem-solving test and the interview guidelines are the research instruments. The results of the study show that FI students are able to understand and analyze data independently and systematically, use logical inference to choose a solution strategy, and provide a thorough procedural explanation. They are also capable of self-verification, which shows strong self-control In contrast, FD students face difficulties in selecting important information, making preparations that rely on the teacher's example, and performing inconsistent completion steps. Since the evaluation stage of FD students still depends on external justification, they also show a lack of self-regulation. These results confirm that cognitive style affects the activation of critical thinking indicators at each stage of problem-solving. In addition, cognitive style also provides implications for the importance of adaptive learning based on students' cognitive characteristics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Adversity Quotient (AQ) and learning independence on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities and to explore problem-solving strategies based on differences in AQ and learning independence levels. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, involving 150 secondary school students. Results showed that AQ and learning independence significantly influenced problem-solving abilities, with learning independence having a greater impact. Students with high learning independence were more innovative and persistent, while those with low independence faced challenges. This study highlights the importance of developing AQ and learning independence to enhance students' problem-solving skills. Education should strengthen these aspects through strategies like project-based learning and resilience training, to better prepare students for real-world challenges.

Abstract

Reflective thinking is a critical cognitive process that supports students in analysing, monitoring, and evaluating their reasoning when solving mathematical problems. This study aims to reveal differences in prospective teachers’ reflective thinking when solving open-ended mathematics problems. This qualitative case study involved two prospective teachers representing masculine male and feminine female gender-role orientations. Subjects were selected based on a gender questionnaire and mathematical ability. Instruments included a gender questionnaire, problem-solving tasks, and semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed through classification, reduction, presentation, interpretation, and conclusion drawing, with credibility ensured through time triangulation. The results indicate that the masculine male participant demonstrated a more systematic and complete reflective thinking profile, articulated logical justifications, and explored alternative strategies. In contrast, the feminine female participant presented incomplete and unsystematic steps, with limited logical reasoning and strategic variation. These findings show that gender-role orientation qualitatively influences reflective thinking in solving open-ended problems. This study contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by providing insights for designing gender-responsive and adaptive mathematics instruction to strengthen prospective teachers’ reflective thinking and promote equitable learning quality.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine how the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model can be effectively applied to foster critical thinking abilities in junior secondary students, particularly within the domain of algebra. This study employed a qualitative approach with a teaching experiment design conducted in Grade VII A (29 students) at SMP PGRI II Wajak over four sessions. Data were collected through observation, pretest-posttest, student worksheets (LKPD), and questionnaires about learning motivation. According to Facione, the tool used to evaluate critical thinking skills includes six indicators: The study’s findings indicate notable progress in students’ critical thinking skills across six core dimensions: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference (conclusion), explanation, and self regulation evident both in their problem-solving performance and throughout the learning process. Both the N-Gain results, which were categorized as high (62.07%) and medium (37.93%), and the observation results, which demonstrated the domination of the good to very good category during the third meeting, demonstrate this growth. These results suggest that using the PBL paradigm can enhance students' quantitative critical thinking abilities and possibly boost their enthusiasm to learn. This study suggests using PBL as an alternative learning approach focused on fostering the growth of higher order thinking abilities.
