Abstract

One of the obstacles that are often faced in livestock raising is a matter of disease. Even sometimes farmerssuffered economic losses and no longer breeding due to the death of livestock. The health service is one ofthe factors that determine the success of a farm. The aim of this implemented service to improve health ofbali cattle by through health services which include spraying, provision of vitamins and treatment of cattle atUniversity of Udayana Campus around area Jimbaran Hill. Results of community service activities on cattleat University of Udayana Campus around area Jimbaran Hill, showed a positive response and a highenthusiasm of livestock farmers, that shown with the large number of cattle (37 cattle ) which can be given alivestock health services. The number and type of service animal on the farm is dominated by provision ofvitamins as much as 32 cattle (86.48%), spraying action of 30 cattle (81.08%), worm medication of 7 cattle(18.92%), and administration of antibiotics of 6 cattle (16.21%). Breeders appreciate the service activities ofthe Institute for Research and Community Services and hope a sustainable because it was felt useful.

Abstract

Rabies has been spread to all over part of Bali, caused 160 people and thousands of dogs’ death. Theeffort for preventing rabies have been done, many villages after six months of eradicating rabies programmedhave been free, but a few villages still infected with the rabies. The aim of the study was to find the factorsthat make a number of villages are still infected with rabies. The study was conducted by doing a fieldsurvey to the nine districts of Bali. The survey was aimed at villages that remain infected despite effortsto control rabies has been done in the village. The device of survey is equipped with open ended and closedended questionnaire to be asked to the respondents. Characteristic villages infected with rabies will befigured out after the data were analyzed descriptively. The risk factors that prominent that make Baliinfected rabies include: dogs kept by releasing freely; presence of rabies carrier animals other than dogs;dog free contact with other dogs; the dogs were kept without having fed; puppies obtained from others; theflow of the dogs in and out to the village; And many communities have not obtained adequate counselingregarding the rabies. The conclusion that may be drawn is that there are some of factors that make Baliremain infected rabies.

Abstract

Kintamani dog growth pattern was observed by measuring the length, circumference and body weight. This study aims to obtain a pattern of growth and determine at what age the growth of kintamani dogs reaches the inflection point (begins to grow slowly) and reaches adult size (begins to stop growing). Data on growth patterns and inflection points of kintamani dogs are useful as a reference for determining the right time for the kintamani dog to be first mated, knowing the existence of abnormalities in growth and nutritional status. The research samples were 90 female kintamani dogs and 90 males aged 0 to 800 days. Measurement of body length and circumference uses a meter, while body weight is measured by digital scales. The growth curve used by the estimator is a sigmoid curve with two parameters: the size of body length, chest circumference and body weight at birth and as an adult. The conclusion of this study is that the pattern of growth in body weight, body length, chest circumference, height of the back limbs and height of the front legs of male and female kintamani dogs has a sigmoid growth pattern. The body size of a female dog has an inflection point or begins to grow slowly and reaches an adult size at a younger age than a male. Female dogs also reach the maximum size earlier than male dogs. The speed of reaching the inflection point on the growth of kintamani dogs were: Chest circumference, front limb height, body length, height of the back leg and body weight. While the speed of achieving adult size were : height of the back leg, body length, height of the front limb, chest circumference and weight.

Abstract

Cryopreservation is an ultra rapid freezing process to preserve tissue or organ. The studywas conducted to identify the effectiveness of cryoloop vitrification method and the viability ofembryos following vitrification. Embryos at blastocyst stage were vitrified by placing them inequilibration medium containing 10% ethylene glycol (EG) and phosphate buffer saline (PBS) wichsupplemented with 20% new born calf serum for 8-10 minutes. The blastocysts were then removedand put in vitrification medium (15% dimethyl sulfoxide, 15% EG, and 0.5M sucrose), and theprocess in the vitrifivcation medium not longer than 25-30 seconds. The blastocysts were immediatelytransferred to the vitrification medium film in the cryoloop and plunged into 100 ml liquid nitrogen. The warming process was done by immersing the cryoloop which carried the vitrified blastocstsinto PBS supplemented with 20% serum and 0.5M sucrose for 1 minute, and then removed to samesolution supplemented with 0.25M sucrose and 0.1M sucrose for 2 minutes respectively. Theblastocysts were washed 4 times in kalium simplex optimized medium (KSOM) and cultured indrops of KSOM in 5% CO2 incubator at 370C. The observations were done every 6 hours for 48hours using inverted microscope ( Olympus IX70 Japan). The viability of embryos was assessed onthe basis of the intact morphology, reexpansion of the blastosul, and the development of embryosinto advance stage. The results showed that 85.71% of vitrified embryos, developed into advancestages and 19% of them hatched. In conclusion the cryoloop can be used to vitrify the embryos.

Abstract

Rabies was a new emerging disease in Bali. After the first case of rabies in 2008 there were morethan one hundred of human victims in Bali. The aim of this study was to report the anatomical locationof human body bitten by rabies infected dogs in Bali, and also the day of victims death after the bitten. Aretrospective cross-sectional review of rabies incidences from September 2008 to the end of 2011 was usedin this study. A total of 122 rabies human victims data were used as a population sample. The data on theprofiles of individuals victim were colected , such as the age, gender, living place, anatomical bite site onhuman body, bite date, and type of biting animal. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptiveanalysis. The result showed that the anatomical location of human body that bitten by rabies infected dogwas occurred on leg (52%), hand (32%), body (6%), and head (4%). Of 122 victims, 61.5% were men and38.5% were woman. The death time of the human rabies victims in average occurred at day 95th after thebite date, and time of the victims death depended on the anatomical location of the bite. Bite that occurredon the head caused death in average on day 19th, on the body on day 83th, on the hand on day 122nd, and onleg on day 166th. In conclusion, the most victims of human rabies in Bali was men and the death was foundoccurred on day 95th after the bite date. The bite at the head caused death more quickly than the other partof human body.

Abstract

A study was conducted to find out the ability of Centella asiatica (C. asiatica) in enhancing antibodyresponse of C. asiatica treated mice following Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) infections. It is therefore expectedthat herbal drug such as  C. asiatica  can be used as an alternative medicine to prevent and to curesalmonellosis both in animals and human. Experimental laboratory studies were conducted usingCompletely Factorial Randomized Design. Mice were divided into four groups and they were treatedrespectively with destilated water (negative control), 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg BW/day of  C. asiaticaextract. The treatment was conducted daily for two weeks  and the mice were inoculated with 105 cells/mlof  S. typhi. The antibody response were examined by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)on first day, second week and fourth week  after S. typhi infections.  The result showed that treatment ofmice with C. asiatica extract significantly (p<0,05) enhanced antibody titer of Balb/c mice after S. typhiinfections. The highest antibody titer was observed at four weeks after S. typhi infections with 500 mg/kgBW/day (94,0370 ± 1,69 IU).

Abstract

Bali cattle (Bos (Bibos) banteng) often experience fractures (fractures) of metacarpale, femur bone or tibia-fibular bone. This study was aim to reveal the strength and density of female Bali cattle bone which determines the occurrence of fractures. In order to reveal the strength of bali cattle bones, the elements that need to be explored include: bone density, cortical thickness of tibia bone, bone diameter, and bone resistance to pressure. To determine bone density performed by measuring bone specific graavity, cortical thickness of bone, carried out by splitting the bone by sawing the tibia bone extensively, then measuring the thickness of the wall of the bone cylinder using a caliper. Measurement of bone resistance to pressure was done by weighing the bone with a certain weight until the bone breaks or cracks and then measured by checking in which load the bones breaks or cracks. The result shown that the average density of Bali cow os tibia is 1.95 g/mL, average os tibia diameter is 26.45 mm, os tibia cortical thickness from top, middle, and bottom in sequence are 5.50 mm, 6.25 mm, and 5.35 mm. The result of os tibia compressive strength test is 9.26 Pascal with average load can be hold is 56.75 Newton and average wide of os tibia cross section cut is 6.05 cm2. This study result can be used as representation of Bali cow os tibia strength that has not been widely reported and can be used as recommendation for improvement of female Bali cattle livestock management.
