Abstract

This article endeavors to scrutinize the creation and functionalities of interrogative constructions, with a specific emphasis on the Makassar Language. The research design employed in this study involved the use of primary sources and followed a descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through conversations with Makassar participants. To analyze the syntactic data, the study adopted X-Bar Theory as its theoretical foundation, which was then depicted in the form of syntax trees. The findings of this study indicated that the Makassar Language serves two grammatical functions, namely as a specifier and a complement. The highest level of projection in this structure was the Complementizer Phrase/CP. The distinction between these functions lay in the placement of question words. When a question word was positioned at the beginning of a sentence, it functioned as a specifier and followed the interrogative structure rule of QW + Subject + Predicate + Adv (optional). On the other hand, question words that required an answer other than the subject or were positioned at the end of a sentence were referred to as complementary functions. In this function, the researcher identified the pattern where the structure was written as Subject + Predicate + QW. X-Bar theory also helps in teaching syntax which needs a lot practice including creating tree diagrams of sentences to parse each constituent that requires a platform or program that can lead the students to diagramming

Abstract

The research was conducted to uncover how American and British high school students utilize expressive speechacts for each other’s culinary representation. It examined the linguistic and cultural manifestations in which reviewers communicated their personal opinions and attitudes toward food. The research applied a descriptivequalitative approach using Searle’s theory of the illocutionary point of speech act, which comprised the pragmatical characteristics focusing on the spoken form expression from both cultures. The data were collected from two video blogs from a YouTube channel called ‘Jolly’, with the title “British high-school students try American biscuits and gravy for the first time” and “Americans eat British comfort food for the first time” by using listening and note-taking techniques on the expressive speech act that occurred from the transcript of the video blog. The results show that both American and British high school students have expressive speech acts of surprise, preference, and disbelief. Yet, the unique traits of both cultures can be noticed in the way Americans express disgust while the British express humor.

Abstract

Indonesia now has the second largest number of Japanese language learners in the world after China.   Among those many learners, there are those who use the Japanese language in part of their lives by working and studying in Japan, or working at Japanese companies in Indonesia.  In Japanese language education, the aim is to teach learners to be able to communicate correctly with Japanese people.  In order to communicate correctly, it is essential to remember words and learn the correct structure of sentences, but phrasing is also necessary for comfortable conversation. Pronunciation and accent accuracy are also very important in these verbal communications. It is common for learners to be misunderstood due to mistakes in pronunciation or accent, or to have trouble understanding what they are saying to Japanese people.  Pronunciation and accent articulation can be tricky. At times, many learners do not notice the difference in sounds, or cannot move their mouths and tongues according to Japanese pronunciation.  The reasons for this difficulty include the features of Japanese that are not found in other languages as well as the mother tongue interference. There are some Japanese pronunciations that are not in their native language. Learners often replace such unknown Japanese phonemes with familiar pronunciations. Its pronunciation is chosen from among mother tongues.  Indonesia is a multiethnic and multilingual country.  Among them, Javanese is spoken by a lot of  people in Indonesia. There are some characteristics in the pronunciation of Japanese learners whose mother tongue is Javanese, and it is believed that these characteristics are related to their mother tongue. Japanese has affricates [dz] and [ts]. These affricates are said to be pronunciations that many Japanese learners around the world find difficult. Javanese native speakers also have difficulties to make [dza], [dzɯ], [dze], [dzo], and [tsɯ], correctly. Analysing learners’ phonological processes and the cause of this phonologically.  This research will provide hints for improving the pronunciation of Javanese native speakers.

Abstract

Semantically, the construction of directional motion verbs has two significant points: manner of motion, which refers to the way the motion is performed, and path, which conveys the directional meaning. In the context of verbal construction with directional motion, the path component can be constructed through directional verbs or prepositional phrases as markers of the goal. Based on these patterns, Talmy (1975) and Slobin (2006) classified languages into three frameworks: verb-framed languages, satellite-framed languages, and equipollent-framed languages. This research aims to describe the construction of direct motion verb in Madurese language and critically analyze the position of Madurese as an Austronesian language based on the classification proposed by Talmy and Slobin. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach, this study collects primary data from native Madurese speakers, and the secondary data from article journal related to Madurese language as comparison. In conclusion, Madurese language can be categorized as a verb-framed language overall. Based on the analysis, there are several directional verbs in Madurese that can simultaneously carry meanings consistent with prepositional phrases, although in other sentence contexts, they may exhibit different semantic and syntactic patterns. Furthermore, Madurese tends to fall into the verb-framed language category as it lacks a resultative-adjective pattern, and its directional verbs are not main verbs but rather open-class adjuncts.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study investigates pronunciation errors in Indonesian nasal consonants made by native Arabic speakers. Using a reading elicitation technique, data were collected focusing on the pronunciation of the nasal consonants /ŋ/ and /ɲ/, which were then transcribed using International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols. The analysis involved identifying distinctive features of sounds within the nasal segment when errors occurred. The results revealed a consistent pattern of assimilation, with changes notably influenced by surrounding sounds. Velar nasals underwent assimilation influenced by both vowels and consonants, resulting in substitutions such as /ʔ/, /ɢ/, and /n/. In contrast, palatal nasals showed assimilation primarily influenced by adjacent vowels, leading to alterations represented by /ʔ/ and /ɲj/. These findings highlight the systematic nature of phonological errors in the pronunciation of nasal consonants by Arabic speakers learning Indonesian and offer valuable insights for language instructors and researchers in the field of second language acquisition.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the causative-passive morphological construction of Indonesian and Japanese and its unique features and constraints. This study offers a contribution in the form of an examination of a feature that is not found in all languages that have causative and passive markers. The data collection method used in this study is the observation method. Data on morphological causative-passive constructions were obtained from the LCC Indonesian 2023 corpus and the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Japanese. The acceptability of causative-passive constructions in Indonesian was tested by the author as a native speaker of Indonesian and with 2 native speakers in Japanese. This study presents new findings, namely the expansion of Siewieska's (2013) passive criteria, the tendency of Indonesian and Japanese morphological causative-passive patterns along with the uniqueness and constraints of their construction. Based on the analysis results, the formation of morphological causative-passive in Indonesian is through the base form of intransitive verbs (36.99%), nouns (32.05%), adjectives (26.48%), adverbs (4,18%) with transitive verbs are unproductive. Meanwhile, in Japanese the formation is through the base form of nouns (77,76%), transitive verbs (17,97%), onomatopoeia (2,83%), and intransitive verbs (1,44%). Indonesian and Japanese have unique features that the morphological causative construction of transitive verbs can be passivized. The constraints on causative-passive morphological construction in Indonesian lie in emotional verbs. Meanwhile, in Japanese, constraints also occur in emotional verbs and in the suffix -gar-u which can be formed into causative but cannot be passivized.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phonological processes and contributing factors affecting the pronunciation of final consonant sounds by native Japanese speakers learning Indonesian. The research employs the theory of generative transformational phonology, using distinctive features to address the research questions. A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted, utilizing data from the Japanesia course's online class videos on YouTube, collected through observation and note-taking techniques. The analysis identifies three main phonological processes in Japanese learners' pronunciation of Indonesian final consonants: sound substitution (e.g., [n] to [ŋ] and [l] to [r]), elision of [h], and addition of sounds such as [u] following [r] and [s], as well as aspirated [h] after [t] and [k]. These phonological adjustments reflect the absence of certain Indonesian sounds in Japanese, prompting learners to adapt pronunciations to their native phonological system. Furthermore, the Japanese language’s predominant open syllable structure (CVCV) generally excludes word-final consonants aside from nasals, contributing to these adaptations.
