Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches are materials used as organic fertilizers that can be applied to oil palm plantations, thereby reducing the use of inorganic fertilizers. Indigofera zollingeriana is an appropriate alternative as an interplant because of its high branch and leaf development. Functions as a ground cover and a supplier of carbon stocks naturally plays a role in water and soil conservation. This study aims to determine the effect of oil palm empty fruit bunches and I. zollingeriana on land improvement to support oil palm growth and production. Variables observed included changes in soil water content, soil microorganism activity, and carbon stock. The results showed that the soil planted with I. zollingeriana and given the empty fruit bunches of oil palm had a higher soil moisture content. The highest soil carbon stock, oil palm carbon stock, and vegetation carbon stock were 81.6 t ha-1, 36.60 t ha-1, and 1.89 t ha-1, respectively. The population and activity of microorganisms varies. The highest total microorganisms were treated with I. zollingeriana and oil palm EFB 105 (10⁵CFU g-1), while the lowest was 60 (10⁵CFU g-1). Planting I. zollingeriana and providing oil palm empty fruit bunches increased groundwater reserves by 36.71%.

Abstract

Abstract

Kata kunci: dampak lingkungan, kelapa sawit, LCA, pemanasan global, pembibitan ABSTRACT As the initial stage in the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) plant life cycle, oil palm seedling cultivation becomes a crucial aspect that requires in-depth evaluation. Understanding the environmental impact at the seedling phase is critical to designing more sustainable management strategies, reducing ecosystem damage, and achieving a balance between production and conservation. This study aims to present an environmental impact analysis of oil palm seedling cultivation at the Oil Palm Nursery Unit (UPKS) of Politeknik Negeri Lampung using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. This study focuses on a gate-to-gate life cycle assessment conducted from October to December 2023. Data were collected through field visits and interviews with UPKS managers. The LCA scope covers from seed acceptance to ready-to-distribute seedlings. Environmental impact modeling used openLCA version 2.0.3 with the CML-IA baseline method and supporting database Agribalyse v3.0.1. Results indicate that oil palm seedling nursery generally has an insignificant environmental impact. The most substantial contributions come from secondary impacts, mainly marine aquatic ecotoxicity at 190.52122 kg 1,4-DB eq. and abiotic depletion (fossil fuels) at 5.65733 MJ. Primary impacts are potential global warming (GWP100a) at 0.27033 kg CO2 eq., primarily from polybag use, and potential human toxicity at 0.08227 kg 1,4-DB eq. Efforts to mitigate environmental impacts can be achieved by using reusable pot trays or organic material-based polybags as alternatives, coupled with a combination of inorganic and organic fertilizers to reduce the dosage of inorganic fertilizers. Additionally, curtailing evapotranspiration rates from plants and growing media can be accomplished by employing organic mulch and growing media enriched with organic matter. Keywords:  environmental impact, global warming, LCA, nursery, oil palm

Abstract

Peatland fires are a significant environmental issue, impacting local ecosystems and contributing to global climate change. This study evaluates the Peat Fire Vulnerability Index (PFVI) for sapric and hemic maturity levels under oil palm plantations in Pangkalan Pisang Village, Riau Province. Data on groundwater level, soil moisture, rainfall, and maximum temperature were collected from December 2021 to December 2022. The PFVI, modified from the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), was calculated and correlated with these variables. The groundwater level varied from 3 cm to 76 cm below the surface, with an average of 36.23 cm. In sapric blocks, 29% of the groundwater level was less than 40 cm, while 73% were deeper. In hemic blocks, 44% were less than 40 cm, and 56% were deeper. Soil moisture in the top 10 cm layer fluctuated between 32% and 55% (v/v) Results showed significant negative correlations between PFVI and groundwater levels (r = -0.173 to -0.889) and soil moisture (r = -0.835 to -0.808), indicating that lower groundwater levels and soil moisture increase fire risk. High PFVI values in July corresponded with the lowest rainfall (59 mm) and groundwater levels below 40 cm. The study highlights the importance of monitoring hydrometeorological conditions and soil properties to effectively predict and mitigate peatland fires. Our findings are crucial for developing strategies to manage peatland sustainability and reduce fire hazards, especially in tropical regions with prevalent oil palm cultivation.
