Abstract

This article examines how leather craft industry contributes to tourism development in Magetan East Java Indonesia and vice versa. This study applied a qualitative approach and is descriptive in nature. Techniques of collecting data include site observation, interview, document review, and focus group discussion. Data were analyzed using the interactive model and thematic analysis. Research results indicate four themes. First, leather craft industry in Magetan that is mostly home industry has been empowered in many ways. Several aspects, including a high number of tourist visits, local government policy, abundant human resources, and industrious businessmen have strengthened the industry. Some local government policies have been implemented in several programs to develop the industry. Second, quality products and new design innovation for leather crafts are limited. Most products that are dominated by shoes and sandals are created for lower-middle-income consumers. Third, leather craft industries in Magetan have contributed to the establishment of local entrepreneurship, small-medium enterprises, and tourism. They create job opportunities for the locals and boost the local economy. Fourth, the relationship between leather craft centers and tourism activities is dominated by tourists’ purchase of leather craft products for souvenirs. However, tourism activity in the area is not yet aimed at watching and involving tourists in the process of craft making for educational tourism purposes.

Abstract

History subject in secondary schools faces a number of challenges which may affect the efficiency of student learning outcomes. Several factors which influence such condition are the idea that history is less important than other subjects, lack of employing attractive educational methods and instruments, as well as limited facilities and learning resources in schools. An important aspect that needs to be reconsidered is the use of history-learning instrument beyond a classroom. This research explores the use of the archaeological site of Sangiran as a pre-literacy learning tool for junior high school students. This is a quantitative study which was carried out by a survey that involves the 10th grade high school students as research subjects. Sixty four students were divided into two groups, i.e. an experimental class consisting students who have visited the Sangiran site, and a control class of those who have not. The analysis indicates (sig 2 tailed) was 0.00 in the paired sample t test. Sig 0.00 is smaller than sig 0.05 (sig 2 tailed <sig 5-007). Thus, showing that the control class students did not share direct experience with historical material and passive learning activities. Consequently, they have not explored further the use of the Sangiran site as a means of learning. Students of the experimental class show better learning outcomes. The study concludes that learning history by visiting the Sangiran site can significantly increase awareness of the importance of history and encourage students' concern of the historical heritages.

Abstract

Research on gender and tourism is very important at least because of three reasons. First, processes involved in tourism are constructed out of gender ideologies in the society. Second, gender relations contribute to the dynamics of the fluidity of gender identity in tourism. Finally, gender perspective is a tool for understanding the relationship between tourism and social process. Unfortunately, there have been limited studies on gender in tourism. This study offers empirical evidence of gender in tourism governance from Indonesia’s experience. It assesses the gender differences in tourism governance by proposing three variables, namely involvement, competence, and barriers to women and men involvement in tourism governance. The study was conducted in Karangayar regency in Indonesia, with the survey method as a data collection technique. No less than four hundred respondents were recruited in the survey, comprising of two hundred men and two hundred women. Mokken scale analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. Using the gendered perspective framework, the findings show three results. First, there is significant difference in the involvement of men and women in Indonesia’s tourism governance. Secondly, there is no significant difference between the competence of women and men in tourism governance. Lastly, it is found that there is no significant difference between the barriers of women and men in tourism governance. Therefore, while gender ideology still occurs in tourism governance, it has increasingly reduced.

Abstract

Mount Lawu region has abundant resources consisting of diverse flora and fauna which have the potentials to be developed as ecotourism attractions. It has also cultural sites containing local wisdom. As the area is a fragile ecosystem, it needs appropriate planning for green management and development. This research aims at: (1) exploring the planning concept for managing and developing ecotourism in the region; (2) analyzing the spatial distribution of ecotourism facilities to support sustainable management, and (3) creating a foundation for designing a new spatial planning model for ecotourism development in Mount Lawu region. Mapping method using geographic information system (GIS), spatial analysis, and interactive analysis were employed as analytical lenses. Research findings reveal that ecotourism management planning in Mount Lawu region has not optimized the function of spaces. Even though ecotourism has developed in the region for several years, the appropriate usage of spaces has not been taken into account by stakeholders. Essential facilities of ecotourism including space for interpretation have not been provided. This study highlights the significance of spatial planning to manage and develop sustainable mountain ecotourism in Mount Lawu region by mapping out the resources and facilities to support planning and decision making. It is in line with several models proposed by some researchers which suggest the importance of analyzing the available spaces for sustainable ecotourism management and development.
