Abstract

This study examines the variation in children’s spoken language, with a particular focus on the use of swear words. It compares how swear words are defined and analyzed by Artificial Intelligence (Perplexity AI) and the electronic form of Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). The research adopts a sociolinguistic framework, drawing on Steven Pinker's (2005) theories of swearing, Anderson and Trudgill’s (1992) work on language variation, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. By integrating these approaches, the study aims to explore the variation and transformation of swear words among children. Data were collected through primary sources, including direct observations and voice recordings of children’s conversations. The analysis involved categorizing the swear words, identifying their functions, analyzing their use in context, and comparing their definitions in Perplexity AI and KBBI. The study found that the online KBBI struggles to keep up with the rapid development of swear words used by children, whereas Perplexity AI offers a more adaptive and accurate representation of these terms. Seventeen swear words were identified and categorized into four groups: humorous (6 words), expletive (5 words), auxiliary (3 words), and abusive swearing (3 words). These words performed 13 distinct functions in children’s conversations. The findings highlight the limitations of traditional dictionaries in capturing contemporary language, while also emphasizing the potential of AI tools in documenting and analyzing evolving linguistic trends. This study also finds the transformation of swear words based on cultural and social context.

Abstract

AbstrakKajian pustaka merupakan hal mendasar dalam meneliti maupun menulis artikel ilmiah. Melalui kajian pustaka dapat ditemukan informasi terbaru bidang yang akan diteliti, celah penelitian, dan rujukan dasar teoritis untuk meneliti dan atau menulis artikel ilmiah. Namun demikian banyak guru memiliki kesulitan dalam menulis kajian pustaka yang mengakibatkan mereka enggan meneliti dan publikasi. Tujuan dari pengabdian pada masyarakat ini adalah meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru dalam menulis kajian pustaka pembelajaran berbasis literasi digital. Metode yang digunakan adalah pelatihan dan pendampingan secara luring dan daring; dimulai dengan penyajian materi tentang menuliskan judul penelitian, pengetahuan tentang kajian pustaka, tujuan dan fungsi kajian Pustaka, serta cara membuat kajian Pustaka, dilanjutkan dengan pendampingan penulisan. Sasaran kegiatan adalah para guru di Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, Madrasah Tsanawiyah dan Madrasah Aliyah Istiqlal Jakarta. Kegiatan menunjukkan hasil yang baik dengan indicator semua peserta menuliskan judul penelitian dan mendekonstruksi untuk menetapkan variable dan konteks penelitian, mengidentifikasi kata kunci sebagai dasar kajian pustaka, menyusun kerangka kajian pustaka untuk dikembangkan sesuai kebutuhan peserta. Kesimpulannya adalah program pendampingan dari perguruan tinggi bermanfaat bagi guru dalam menyelesaikan masalah penulisan kajian pustaka. AbstractReviewing works of literature is a basic need for researching and writing academic articles. Conducting a literature review will enable us to reveal the current information regarding to the topic to be studied, the research gap, and references for the theoretical bases. However, many teachers in Indonesia find difficulties in writing a literature review causing them to be reluctant to conduct research and produce academic articles. This community service aimed to improve teachers' knowledge and skills in writing literature reviews on digital literacy-based learning. Offline and online workshop and mentoring methods were employed during the service, carried out in two main phases; orienting and engaging teachers to get to know about literature review and research, engaging and mentoring teachers to search and conduct literature review. The target of this service were teachers of the Islamic Primary, Junior High, and Senior Schools in 2 Istiqlal Jakarta. The service showed good results in terms of the complete participation of the teachers in writing their research titles, deconstructing the title to decide the research focuses and context, identifying the keywords as the bases for the literature review, and composing the framework to be developed related to their needed literature reviews. It can be concluded that mentoring program from the faculty members can solve the teachers’ problems in writing literature reviews.

Abstract

Foreign language learners usually learn a foreign language using their first language. There has been limited report on study discussing the ability of foreign language learners to learn a foreign language using their learned foreign language. This study employed an autobiographical narrative inquiry based on the experience of three multilinguals. This study aimed to find out their strategies in learning foreign languages and the factors affecting in learning foreign languages. This study found that there were two Indonesian multilinguals that learn Japanese using their limited ability in English. The other multilingual learn English at school and learned Dutch at a language course. The results proved that there are factors such as learner characteristics, linguistic factors, learning processes, age and acquisition, instructional variables, context, purpose, motivation, attention, attitude, study habit, self-concept, and student aptitude affecting learners in learning foreign languages. This study gives little contribution to our understanding on the strategies that might been applied by a foreign language learner to learn a new foreign language.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini merupakan lanjutan dari kegiatan tahun sebelumnya yang diadakan oleh Program magister Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Jakarta dalam upaya membantu guru-guru bahasa Inggris di wilayah Agam Barat dan Agam Timur, Sumatera Barat dalam mengembangkan pembelajaran berbasis microlearning. Kegiatan pendahulu yang diadakan pada tahun 2022 menghasilkan pemahaman guru akan pembelajaran mikro (microlearning) dan kemungkinan penerapan pembelajaran mikro di pelajaran Bahasa Inggris mereka. Sebagai tindak lanjut dari kegiatan itu, kegiatan kali ini bertujuan untuk membantu guru-guru tersebut mengembangkan pembelajaran mikro dan mendigitalkan obyek materi ajar mikro (MeMO). Mempertimbangkan jarak geografis yang relative jauh antara Jakarta – Agam, kegiatan dilakukan secara virtual menggunakan zoom meeting. Kegiatan dihadiri oleh dua puluh lima orang guru dari MGMP Agam Barat dan Agam Timur. Dibandingkan kegiatan sebelumnya, ada penurunan jumlah peserta dikarenakan kendala pekerjaan dan hambatan jaringan internet. Diskusi kelompok terpumpun ini dipimpin oleh lima orang dosen dan dibantu oleh delapan orang mahasiswa yang memiliki pengetahuan memadai akan pembelajaran mikro terutama untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris berdasar Kurikulum Merdeka yang meliputi enam keterampilan – menyimak, berbicara, membaca, memirsa, menulis, dan mempresentasikan. Dikarenakan keterbatasan waktu guru untuk mengikuti sejumlah pelatihan, kegiatan ini dilengkapi dengan konsultasi dan bimbingan secara daring melalui Google Classroom. Dengan cara ini diharapkan guru dapat tetap mengembangkan kemampuan dan profesionalismenya di samping melakukan tugas utamanya, mengajar. Kegiatan ini menghasilkan saran dan harapan peserta untuk mendapatkan pelatihan secara tatap muka agar mereka dapat berkonsultasi terkait pengembangan obyek materi ajar mikro, mulai dari dekonstruksi capaian pembelajaran yang ada di kurikulum, memilih dan memilah obyek materi ajar mikro, hingga mendigitalkannya.

Abstract

Penelitian Tindakan kelas merupakan jalur strategis untuk pengembangan profesionalisme yang diwajibkan bagi para guru di Indonesia, namun tidak semua guru percaya diri dalam melakukan penelitian ini karena berbagai alas an. Pengabdian Masyarakat ini bertujuan memberikan pengetahuan dan pendampingan penelitian tindakan kelas dan penulisan karya ilmiah. Sasarannya adalah para guru bahasa, sains dan ilmu pengegtahuan sosial di Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, Tsanawiyah dan Aliyah Istiqlal Jakarta. Kegiatan dilakukan dengan pelatihan dan lokakarya secara luring dan asinkronous, sejak bulan Maret sampai dengan September 2024. Kegiatan diawali dengan pemberian pengetahuan tentang penelitian tindakan kelas, dan penulisan karya ilmiah serta merefleksikan pembelajaran berbasih literasi digital yang telah dilakukan oleh para guru, diikuti dengan pendampingan dalam merancang penelitian, mulai dari menuliskanm judul, latar belakang dan masalah serta tujuan penelitian; mencari referensi dan menuliskan kajian pustaka; dilanjutkan dengan mempersiapkan langkah-langkah meneliti dan instrument penelitian. Berdasarakan keaktifan berpartisipasi dan produk lokakarya yang ditampilkan para peserta dapat disimpulkan bahwa pengabdian masyarakat ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan para peserta dalam merancang penelitian tidakan kelas.

Abstract

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is globally adopted as a standard framework for measuring language proficiency across various contexts, including English language education. Despite its increasing application, little is known about how CEFR-based test preparation impacts learner motivation, particularly among postgraduate students. This study aims to explore the motivation of postgraduate students to practice the CEFR preparation level B1 reading test. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry design, data were collected through questionnaires, observation sheets, and self-reflection reports and analyzed thematically to identify key motivational patterns. The results show that 90% of participants reported feeling motivated by the CEFR B1 reading practice, while 10% expressed a neutral stance. Seven prominent motivational terms emerged from the analysis, they are finished, positive, supported, whole, carefully, focused, and practiced.  These findings suggest that structured CEFR preparation activities can enhance learners’ self-perception, focus, and persistence in English learning.

Abstract

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is widely recognized as a prominent framework for learning and assessing English proficiency, including in Indonesia. However, fewer ELT professionals in Indonesia are familiar with the CEFR framework than in other Asian countries. Therefore, when English education students from master’s degree programs at one university in Jakarta used the CEFR test to measure their English skills, and to use their learning experience as a reflective activity. This research was conducted to investigate the challenges encountered by the participants in conducting the CEFR reading test, their strategies to cope with them, and the benefits they gained. A qualitative methodology, incorporating ethnography and autoethnography, was employed, with data analyzed through descriptive analysis. The data is taken from three out of the 16 participants, selected purposively for their data completeness, using participants' reflective forms, responses collected via Google Forms, and interviews. The study found that the challenges encountered were primarily due to the combination of the types of questions, the lengthy text, and later technical issues. The vocabulary, grammar, context, and topic do not pose significant challenges. The strategies used by the participants to cope with the struggle included scanning, skimming, rereading the texts multiple times, and utilizing two devices during the test. The study identifies two key benefits: the experience of taking the test itself and the subsequent reflective activity. This reflection allowed participants to identify their strengths and weaknesses, critically evaluate their performance, and implement strategies for improvement, particularly in developing reading skills. Future research could build on these results to create a test-taking strategy program designed to enhance English language proficiency and integrate this knowledge into learning programs.

Abstract

This community service program aims to boost speaking confidence and mastery of emotion-expression vocabulary among 20 participants aged 9-14 year olds in the Jatinegara Kaum public housing. Using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, the two-day intervention (on 14–15 June 2025) blended student-centered learning, contextual teaching and learning, and communicative language teaching. Activities included an Inside Out audiovisual prompt, matching games, and role-plays targeting greetings, apologies, asking for opinions, encouragement, and expressing concern. Outcomes comprised a vocabulary/expression pre- and post-test, rubric-based role-play assessments, and a post-program survey. The analyses were descriptive and supplemented by qualitative classroom observations. Participants showed gains in recognizing and using target expressions in simple sentences. The most recalled more than five new lexical items and demonstrated improved lexical accuracy, fluency, and oral participation. Overall, the short communicative intervention appears feasible and promising for strengthening basic speaking readiness and thematic vocabulary in this setting; future studies should use multi-session designs with standardized measures and a comparison group to strengthen causal inference and track retention.

Abstract

This study focused on the designing of English lexicogrammar materials that incorporate microlearning for junior high school students, especially 7th graders. The study aimed to develop effective instructional materials that enhance students' understanding of lexico-grammatical concepts through microlearning. A design-based research methodology was employed in this study in three phases (Richey & Klein, 2014b), namely analysis, design, and development. Information related to existing materials was gathered; the product model was planned; and the prototype design was then developed. Data was existing learning materials collected from teachers after they were interviewed and filled out a questionnaire. This study also utilized qualitative content analysis to examine a set of existing learning materials consisting of textbooks, PDFs, and ppt slides. The findings showed that the existing materials are not microlearning-based. The design of learning materials in lexicogrammar integrated with the listening skill named medium of microlearning objects was in the form of two podcasts, one audiobook, and some interactive games in integration with listening skill.
