Abstract

Mercury waste pollution is an environmental health issue resulting from poor management of mineral production waste materials. Small-scale gold mining areas using amalgamation techniques still contribute high levels of mercury waste to the environment. The technical issue of inadequate storage of production waste materials warrants adaptive control studies for small-scale gold miners (PESK). The aim of this research is to determine the efficiency of chemical and biological mercury waste control in small-scale gold mining cases. This research is a literature review using the systematic review method. The obtained articles underwent review, analysis, and comparison of the systematic capabilities of chemical and biological control. The results of this research found 11 relevant study articles published between 2017-2024. Chemical and biological control methods are capable of reducing mercury levels in tailing water by up to 99%. The form of adaptive control for small-scale gold mining conditions is assessed pragmatically and based on reduced mercury levels. The conclusion of this research is that applied research on mercury waste pollution cases in small-scale mining is still relatively lacking. Efficiency in controlling mercury levels is more realistic using biological control. Laboratory test result approaches can indicate the potential of biological control with bioremediation techniques as an efficient adaptive control effort for small-scale gold miners.

Abstract

Abstract

Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is a pollutant that negatively impacts environmental quality and poses health risks to populations exposed over long periods. In Yogyakarta, PM2.5 is the primary pollutant, particularly in urban areas with heavy traffic, such as train stations. This study analyses the risk level of PM2.5 exposure among workers at Yogyakarta Railway Station using an environmental health risk analysis approach. The data was obtained from BB Labkesmas Yogyakarta's study in October 2023, involving 15 respondents working in the station's waiting area. PM2.5 analysis was conducted using a High-Volume Air Sampler (HVAS) with the gravimetric method, and respondents were selected through incidental sampling. The results show that the PM2.5 concentration at Yogyakarta Railway Station (74.97 µg/m³) exceeds the air quality standards set by The Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 02/2023. Risk analysis calculations indicate that most workers remain within the safe category (HQ ≤ 1) for both a 30-year lifetime exposure projection and a real-time exposure projection. However, a respondent is exposed to an unsafe risk (HQ>1), so precautions must be taken to reduce the risk to a safe level. Additionally, it is necessary to conduct a risk analysis study based on a specific period in the future.

Abstract

Waste management is a pressing environmental issue, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. The increasing waste volume from slaughterhouses, including organic waste (blood, rumen contents, manure) and inorganic waste (plastic, metal), poses serious environmental threats if not properly managed. This study aims to improve community knowledge and skills in four key waste management aspects: (1) waste segregation for efficient processing, (2) maggot cultivation as an innovative organic waste solution, (3) rumen waste processing into biogas and organic fertilizer, and (4) sustainable waste residue management. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Results show that proper waste management minimizes pollution and enhances economic value through circular economy principles. Additionally, maggot cultivation reduces organic waste while generating income, and biogas production lowers energy costs. Government support and community participation are essential for sustainability. Effective slaughterhouse waste management benefits the environment while creating economic opportunities, ensuring long-term sustainability, better resource efficiency, and improved public health.

Abstract

Purpose: Diarrhea is one of the leading causes of death among infants in Indonesia and is a significant public health issue. This study aims to identify and analyze various risk factors associated with diarrhea in infants through a literature review approach. Research Method: This study employed a literature review method with a content analysis approach, utilizing articles obtained from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases. The keywords used are “Infants,” “Diarrhea,” and “Risk Factors.” Article selection was conducted systematically using the PRISMA framework, from identification through screening to eligibility assessment. Out of 208 articles obtained, 10 articles were selected that met the criteria for further analysis. Results and Discussion: The study's results indicate that factors closely associated with the incidence of diarrhea in infants include not being exclusively breastfed, poor personal hygiene among mothers, inadequate basic sanitation facilities at home, low maternal education, maternal employment status, and limited socioeconomic conditions within the family. These factors interact with each other and increase the risk of diarrhea in young children. Implications: These findings are significant for preventive efforts in public health, particularly in raising awareness and knowledge among parents about maintaining optimal hygiene, sanitation, and nutrition for their children.
