Abstract

Corticosteroid inhaler is one of the first-line drugs given for the control and prevention of asthma attacks in the long term and continuously. The use of corticosteroid inhalers for a long time has systemic side effects in the oral cavity which can be a predisposing factor for normal fungal infection of Candida albicans microflora, an increase of Candida albicans’s amount in the oral cavity can cause oral candidiasis. Candida albicans detection using q-PCR to detect specific genes in oral swab specimens can provide an indirect picture of the amount of Candida albicans in the samples taken. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the length of use of corticosteroid inhalers and the cycle threshold value in oral swab samples of asthma patient. This type of research is correlational research with data collection techniques using a purposive sampling technique on 30 respondents at the Lung Polyclinic at Bhayangkara Hospital H.S Samsoeri Mertojoso Surabaya who fit the inclusion criteria. Samples were examined using q-PCR to detect specific genes in the ITS-2 region to detect Candida albicans. This research was conducted at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of theMinistry of Health Surabaya Polytechnic during the period April – May 2023. The results showed that there were 26 samples(86.7%) positive for the ITS-2 gene and 4 samples (13.3%) negative for the ITS-2 gene. with sig. 0.307 so that it can be concluded that there is no relationship between the length of use of corticosteroid inhalers and the cycle threshold value of C. albicans in asthmatic’s oral swab sample.

Abstract

In scrutinizing the amalgamation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach within mathematics pedagogy, extant scholarship scarcely offers a holistic evaluation of their synergistic efficacy. Prior research predominantly accentuates scholastic outcomes, frequently neglecting the ramifications of these models on classroom dynamics, including the nuances of student-teacher interactions and student engagement and participation levels. This study probes the integration of PBL and TaRL models to augment students' comprehension of mathematical principles, employing a mixed-methods research design encompassing qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The investigation centered on seventh-grade students in junior high school, utilizing test instruments to evaluate mathematical comprehension and observational protocols to document student and teacher engagement for enriched insights. Comprehensive qualitative and quantitative data analyses were executed. The findings disclosed significant advancements in students' grasp of mathematical concepts, with observations revealing heightened student engagement and more favorable teacher-student interactions. Statistical analyses evidenced substantial disparities between pre-test and post-test scores (p < 0.05). The results proffer recommendations and pragmatic implications for enhancing mathematics education, underscoring the imperative for teacher professional development in deploying this integrative pedagogical model to elevate the quality of mathematics instruction at the secondary school echelon.

Abstract

Stunting is still a big problem in Indonesia because it affects how kids grow and develop over time, especially if it isn't stopped early on. One reason for this is that parents, especially mothers, don't fully understand how to provide balanced nutritional supplementary feeding (PMT). This community service project is all about giving the guardians of Dharma Wanita Persatuan Kindergarten in Dukuhtengah the tools and information they need to do their jobs better. It will do this by making and using interactive educational media in Dukuhtengah Village, Buduran District, Sidoarjo Regency. The implementation method has many steps: working with the school, finding out what parents need to know, making educational materials like booklets and posters, giving advice and showing how to prepare PMT, and testing the students before and after. In total, 36 parents took part in this activity. The analysis results show that the participants' understanding has improved a lot. They scored an average of 54.86 on the pre-test and 86.39 on the post-test, which is an increase of 31.53 points. The paired t-test produced p<0.001, signifying a significant difference, and Cohen's d effect size of 3.79 indicates a substantial effect. This finding shows that the educational media that was created works to teach parents more about PMT and how to stop stunting. In conclusion, interactive educational empowerment activities that use media have been shown to help parents improve their ability to provide their children with the right extra food to meet their nutritional needs. The future goal is to repeat the activities at the Posyandu level and combine them with family-based public health programs to make stunting prevention more effective in the community. ABSTRAKStunting masih menjadi permasalahan serius di Indonesia karena berdampak pada tumbuh kembang anak jangka panjang, terutama bila tidak dicegah sejak dini. Salah satu faktor penyebabnya adalah kurang optimalnya pemahaman orang tua, khususnya ibu, mengenai pemberian makanan tambahan (PMT) bergizi seimbang. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini berfokus pada pemberdayaan dan edukasi wali murid TK Dharma Wanita Persatuan Dukuhtengah melalui pembuatan dan penggunaan media edukasi interaktif di Desa Dukuhtengah, Kecamatan Buduran, Kabupaten Sidoarjo. Metode pelaksanaan mencakup beberapa tahapan, yaitu koordinasi dengan pihak sekolah, identifikasi kebutuhan pengetahuan wali murid, penyusunan media edukasi berupa booklet dan poster, penyuluhan serta demonstrasi penyajian PMT, serta evaluasi dengan pre-test dan post-test. Sebanyak 36 wali murid berpartisipasi aktif dalam kegiatan ini. Hasil analisis menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan pada pemahaman peserta, dengan rata-rata skor pre-test sebesar 54,86 dan post-test sebesar 86,39, sehingga terjadi peningkatan sebesar 31,53 poin. Uji t berpasangan menghasilkan p<0,001 yang menandakan perbedaan signifikan, sementara nilai effect size Cohen’s d sebesar 3,79 menunjukkan efek yang sangat besar. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa media edukasi yang dikembangkan efektif dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan wali murid mengenai PMT dan pencegahan stunting. Kesimpulannya, kegiatan pemberdayaan berbasis media edukasi interaktif terbukti mampu meningkatkan kapasitas orang tua dalam memberikan PMT yang sesuai kebutuhan gizi anak. Prospek ke depan adalah replikasi kegiatan pada jenjang Posyandu, serta integrasi dengan program kesehatan masyarakat berbasis keluarga untuk memperluas dampak pencegahan stunting di tingkat komunitas..

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi potensi enzim kitinase yang dihasilkan oleh bakteri kitinolitik dari limbah kulit udang sebagai biopestisida hayati terhadap larva lalat buah (Drosophila sp.). Penelitian dilakukan melalui tiga tahap, yaitu isolasi dan identifikasi bakteri kitinolitik, pengujian aktivitas enzim kitinase, serta uji efektivitas enzim terhadap kematian larva. Sampel kulit udang putih (Penaeus merguiensis) digunakan sebagai sumber isolat alami yang kaya akan kitin. Hasil isolasi menghasilkan tiga jenis bakteri, yaitu Vibrio sp., Bacillus sp., dan Pseudomonas sp., yang semuanya menunjukkan aktivitas kitinolitik dengan terbentuknya zona bening pada media kitin. Identifikasi morfologi dan biokimia memperkuat hasil tersebut melalui uji pewarnaan Gram, motilitas, serta serangkaian uji fermentasi gula dan TSIA. Uji efektivitas menunjukkan bahwa filtrat enzim kitinase dengan konsentrasi di atas 50% menyebabkan kematian larva secara signifikan, dengan waktu tercepat terjadi pada konsentrasi 100%, yaitu 10 menit 15 detik, sedangkan pada konsentrasi di bawah 40% tidak menunjukkan efek mematikan. Aktivitas enzim kitinase bekerja dengan mendegradasi komponen kitin pada eksoskeleton larva, menyebabkan kerusakan struktural dan gangguan fisiologis yang berujung pada kematian. Hasil penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa enzim kitinase memiliki potensi besar sebagai agen biopestisida ramah lingkungan yang efektif, ekonomis, dan berkelanjutan. Selain itu, pemanfaatan limbah kulit udang sebagai sumber bioteknologi terapan tidak hanya memberikan solusi terhadap permasalahan limbah industri perikanan, tetapi juga mendukung prinsip ekonomi sirkular, inovasi hijau, serta penerapan pertanian hortikultura yang lebih aman bagi manusia, ekosistem, dan keberlanjutan lingkungan jangka panjang.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Iron deficiency anemia is a common nutritional problem among adolescent girls in developing countries such as Indonesia, affecting both health and academic performance. The government has implemented a school-based iron supplementation program to address this issue. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of iron tablet supplementation in increasing hemoglobin levels among 10th-grade female students at MAN 3 Magetan. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. A total of 122 students aged 15–18 years participated based on inclusion criteria and parental consent. The intervention involved weekly iron tablet supplementation for three months. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention using a HemoCue device, and data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. The results showed a significant increase in hemoglobin levels after the intervention (p < 0.05). Prior to supplementation, 39% of the students were anemic, which decreased to 8% after the intervention, with 92% having normal hemoglobin levels. These findings indicate that regular iron supplementation effectively improves hemoglobin levels and reduces anemia prevalence. The program should be continued with sustained nutrition education and monitoring of compliance to ensure long-term effectiveness. ABSTRAK Anemia defisiensi zat besi merupakan masalah gizi yang umum pada remaja putri di negara berkembang seperti Indonesia, berdampak pada kesehatan dan prestasi belajar. Pemerintah telah menjalankan program pemberian tablet tambah darah (TTD) di sekolah sebagai upaya pencegahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi efektivitas pemberian TTD terhadap peningkatan kadar hemoglobin pada siswi kelas X di MAN 3 Magetan. Desain penelitian menggunakan kuasi eksperimen dengan pendekatan one group pre-test dan post-test. Sebanyak 122 siswi usia 15–18 tahun menjadi responden berdasarkan kriteria inklusi dan persetujuan orang tua. Intervensi berupa pemberian TTD dilakukan seminggu sekali selama tiga bulan. Kadar hemoglobin diukur sebelum dan sesudah intervensi menggunakan alat HemoCue, dan data dianalisis dengan uji Wilcoxon Signed-Rank. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan kadar hemoglobin setelah intervensi (p < 0,05). Sebelum intervensi, 39% siswi mengalami anemia, sementara setelahnya hanya 8%, dengan 92% memiliki kadar hemoglobin normal. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pemberian TTD secara rutin efektif meningkatkan kadar hemoglobin dan menurunkan prevalensi anemia. Program ini perlu dilanjutkan secara berkelanjutan dengan edukasi gizi dan pemantauan kepatuhan konsumsi untuk hasil jangka panjang.

Abstract

Diabetic ulcers represent a common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and are frequently associated with infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus possesses multiple virulence factors, including the nuc (nuclease) gene, which encodes a thermonuclease enzyme capable of degrading DNA and destroying phagocytes within the host. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a strain of S. aureus exhibiting resistance to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. This study used conventional PCR Methode to detect the presence of the nuc (nuclease) gene in MRSA isolates obtained from patients with diabetic ulcers. A descriptive quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 30 diabetic ulcer samples collected from Rumah Rawat Luka Surabaya between April and May 2025. Phenotypic identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed, followed by molecular detection of the nuc (nuclease) gene using the conventional PCR method, generating an amplicon of 279 bp. The findings revealed that 19 of the 30 diabetic ulcer swab samples were phenotypically identified as Staphylococcus aureus. Antibiotic susceptibility testing indicated that 6 (31.6%) of these isolates were methicillin-resistant (MRSA). Among the 6 MRSA isolates, 3 (50%) tested positive for the nuc (nuclease) gene. This study emphasizes the application of molecular-based diagnostic methods such as PCR for the rapid detection of MRSA in diabetic ulcers, thereby supporting the selection of appropriate antibiotic therapy and improving the success of clinical management.
