Abstract

Aerodynamic phenomena poses risks for long-span cable-stayed bridge structures, nevertheless, the prevention method is often neglected on older bridges. The effort to reduce the risk and increase the aerodynamic performance of cable-stayed bridges mostly focuses on design and construction stages. This study attempts to improve aerodynamic performance by mitigating the aeroelastic heaving response of an existing bridge structure chosen as the subject, Suramadu Bridge. The approach is made by exploring different options applicable to already built bridges, such as the addition of fairings with varying shapes to modify the shape model of the bridge deck while maintaining the value of vertical and torsional stiffness. The study finds that there is relatively no increase in the lowest margin of critical vortex velocity of the bridge deck with fairing addition compared to the original bridge deck. The amplitude of oscillation caused by aerodynamic lift force is also fairly low since critical vortex velocity occurs in the range of 9.35-9.38 m/s. Upon increasing wind velocity up to the design wind speed of 37.8 m/s, there are significant differences in lift force and amplitude of oscillations. The shape model with the steepest fairing shows a significant decrease in amplitude, up to 35.6% lower than the original bridge deck, indicating a better aerodynamic stability. Meanwhile, the other two shape models show identical and higher amplitude compared to the original bridge deck.

Abstract

Analisis kelayakan finansial dilakukan menggunakan indikator keuntungan usaha, Revenue - Cost Ratio, Break Even Point, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, dan Payback Period. Using Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) in Round Tarpaulin Ponds: Feasibility Analysis of the Fingerling Stage Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) aquaculture plays a strategic role in global fish protein supply; however, production expansion continues to face efficiency and sustainability challenges, particularly during the critical fingerling stage. This study aims to evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of tilapia fingerling production using a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) in round tarpaulin ponds at SLP Magetan, Politeknik Kelautan dan Perikanan Sidoarjo. The research employed a field-based experimental demonstration plot, collecting data on water quality, husbandry performance, investment and operational costs, and production output. Financial feasibility was assessed using profit analysis, Revenue–Cost Ratio, Break Even Point, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, and Payback Period. The results indicate that RAS-based fingerling production generates a net profit of IDR 213,625 per cycle with a Revenue–Cost Ratio of 1.10 and a Break Even Point of IDR 1,658,317.95 per cycle. Long-term analysis shows a positive Net Present Value of IDR 17,178,294 at a 13% discount rate and an Internal Rate of Return of 27.58%, confirming the project’s ability to create economic value and offer a competitive return. Nevertheless, the Payback Period of 12 years and 7 months exceeds the project lifespan of eight years, indicating constraints related to liquidity and capital recovery speed. These findings suggest that RAS-based tilapia fingerling production is technically viable and financially attractive in terms of value creation, yet requires cost optimization and appropriate financing schemes to enhance long-term sustainability. The study provides empirical evidence to support technical decision-making and policy formulation for sustainable RAS-based tilapia aquaculture.

Abstract

Railway bridges are critical infrastructure components that are essential to support and maintain the integrity of major rail transportation networks. Indonesia is located in a tectonic zone known as the Ring of Fire. Risk assessment of these bridges is critical. This research not only considers the physical condition or vulnerability of the bridge itself but also the risk posed by earthquakes and the level of importance of the bridge. The research was conducted on 4 bridges located in East Java Province, namely the BH-129, BH-262, BH-275, and BH-314 Bridges. The rating factor, hazard level, and importance factor influence the risk level. The assessment process starts by using the Bridge Management System (BMS) method and Structure Analysis Program (SAP2000) to assist in calculating the Rating factor. Determining the level of danger by referring to the Earthquake Hazards Map and the Indonesian Earthquake Code (SNI 2833: 2016), The importance is taken based on the level of operational importance of the bridge referring to the same standard. The results show that the four bridges have the same risk value of 0.7809 for each bridge. The results underscore the urgent need for proactive measures to reduce the potential adverse impacts of bridge structure failure. Recommended interventions include strengthening structural elements, increasing inspection frequency, improving maintenance protocols, and, if necessary, replacing compromised structures. These strategies are critical due to the high risk and significant impact on rail safety and operations, especially in areas prone to natural disasters. The results of this study reinforce the urgency of improving the resilience of bridge infrastructure to earthquake threats to maintain the stability and safety of rail transportation in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia, as an archipelago nation located on the equator, is affected by alternating Asian and Australian monsoon systems throughout the year. The east monsoon spans from April to September, while the west monsoon occurs from October to March. In Samarinda, prevailing southern winds lead to significant fluctuations in speed and direction, impacting the stability of bridge structures. Extreme wind events pose risks to suspension bridges through aerodynamic phenomena like flutter, galloping, and vortex shedding, which impose substantial dynamic loads on the structure. This study focuses on analyzing the dynamic response of bridge decks under steady state wind loads. Daily wind data collected from January 2023 to January 2024 revealed wind speeds of 3, 4, and 5 m/s, with extreme speeds reaching 14 and 20 m/s. Steady state simulations were conducted using the simpleFoam solver in Simscale at these speeds, along with the critical velocity of 8.764 m/s derived from the bridge deck's cross-section. The simulation results provided valuable insights into pressure distributions and lateral displacement on the deck.Findings indicate that lateral displacement at a wind speed of 20 m/s reaches 1.235 m, which exceeds design limits and highlights potential structural vulnerabilities. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of steady state CFD simulations in assessing wind-induced effects on bridge structures and underline the importance of mitigation strategies to ensure stability.
