Abstract

ABSTRACTThe shifting local cultural values often become a discourse in discussing the effects of globalization influx. But in Minangkabau these concerns can still be ruled out, thanks to the power of ‘study to nature’ philosophy. This is a custom rule that should not be changed. This study raises the popularity of the Hofstede’s concept and uses the six cultural dimensions to map out the differences in parental characteristics based on rural versus semi-urban areas, family typology and life experiences. It also analyzes the response of adolescents towards culture inheritance based on their birthplace. This quantitative study uses a simple summation operation with 106 sample respondents. Each respondent is a family unit consisting of a father, a mother, and adolescent(s) aged 10-19 years. The low score of LTO indicates that the inheritance of Minangkabau cultural values has been going on for some time by parents to their teenagers. Low UAI and IVR scores do not conflict with Minangkabau cultural tenet, although according to Hofstede this condition needs a revamping. Supposedly the value of matrilineal culture is taught by a Minang mother and her brother. However, anomalies were found in non-Minang father and Minang mother (nMF+MM) due to the absence of the mother’s brother in educating his nephew. Keywords: Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions, core value, cultural inheritanceABSTRAKPeristiwa pergeseran nilai budaya lokal sering menjadi wacana dalam membahas akibat dari masuknya pengaruh globalisasi.

Abstract

The Kato nan ampek is a polite language procedure that regulates Minangkabau society in socializing. Minangkabau customs originate from Islamic teachings, which are described in the terms "Adat Basandi Syarak", "Syarak Basandi Kitabullah", with the essence that Minangkabau customs cannot be separated from the influence of Islamic teachings. This research aims to describe the locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary speech acts in Kato Nan Ampek and the values contained in Kato Nan Ampek. This research uses qualitative methods with a literature study approach (library research) and preliminary research. The research results show that the use of locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary speech acts contained in Kato Nan Ampek is very important for understanding the culture and values of Minangkabau society. By observing these rules, society can minimize social disparities and strengthen relationships between individuals. Keywords: Ethics; Kato Nan Ampek; Values of Manners

Abstract

Pidgins and creoles are two unique language forms, born out of linguistic contact in various global contexts, including trade, colonialism and migration. Pidgins evolved as simple means of communication between speakers of different languages, while creoles emerged when pidgins became the mother tongue of certain communities, expanding their grammatical complexity and vocabulary. The aim of the research is to analyze the evolution of pidgin and creole languages globally, including the problems, procedures, relationships of activities, attitudes, views, and influences of certain phenomena. The research compares the evolution of pidgins and creoles globally, exploring the processes of pidginization, creolization, and their distribution and characteristics in different regions. It highlights the social and linguistic dynamics underlying the formation of these languages, while demonstrating the significant role of pidgins and creoles in understanding the evolution of human language. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to accurately describe facts and situations in society. The research methods include a literature study, where researchers collect data from secondary sources such as books and journals, as well as a historical approach that reviews the development of pidgins and creoles in the context of trade, colonialism and migration. This approach allowed for an in-depth exploration of relevant linguistic and socio-cultural data. The results of this analysis provide deep insights into the relationship between language, culture and history in a changing global context.

Abstract

The qualitative study investigated the digital media impact on language learning, focusing on overcoming anxiety, enhancing linguistic elements, and fostering motivation for developing speaking skills among four English as foreign language (EFL) learners at an Islamic University in Malang, Indonesia. Through the use of observations and in-depth interviews, the study found that learners utilized various digital media such as storytelling, movies, variety shows, and song videos to aid their speaking learning process. The findings indicated that digital media played a significant role in helping learners overcome language anxiety by providing a platform for practice without direct peer interaction, thereby reducing feelings of fear and shyness. Additionally, digital media usage contributed to linguistic element enhancement, including vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and speaking fluency. Moreover, learners’ motivation for developing speaking skills was positively influenced by the enjoyment derived from using digital media which increased their willingness to practice speaking. The study underscores the importance of integrating digital media into EFL speaking instruction due to its potential to address language anxiety, improve linguistic elements, and foster motivation for speaking ability development. By leveraging digital media tools effectively, educators can create engaging and supportive learning milieus that provide to the diverse needs of language learners, eventually enhancing learners’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Speech errors can occur due to language activation and competition in the human brain as a symptom of language friction. Many researchers have studied the language friction and published their findings, indicating that the study about this issue is interesting to conduct. The current literature study aims to review previous research on language friction in terms of methods and linguistics theories applied in those studies. A systematic method was used in this research to select research articles on the language friction, and resulted in 17 articles to be reviewed. Those articles are published in Scopus indexed journals. It is found that in the last seven years, studies on language friction have shown an increasing trend, indicating that this issue is still relevant to study. In addition, most of them indicate that language friction has been analyzed based on psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics theories. However, it is not enough to study language friction from psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives, but also needs to be studied from ethnosociolinguistic perspective. This literature study can help educators and English language learners to choose learning methods by considering the language friction experienced by learners. Furthermore, by understanding the language friction, speech participants can overcome misunderstandings in communication.

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth how speech act theory is applied in various communication contexts and to explore linguists' perspectives regarding this theory. A qualitative method was employed through a literature review approach, which included several stages: data collection, analysis, and validation. The data were gathered from relevant literature, both printed and digital, about the concepts of speech acts and pragmatics. This study investigates the role of speech acts in shaping the understanding of social interaction dynamics and the cultural values embedded within them. The findings indicate that speech acts function as instruments for performing communicative actions. In this context, a speaker's utterance carries a specific intention or meaning, recognizing that people do not speak without purpose. Various descriptive terms are used to illustrate the communicative intent behind utterances. Understanding speech acts is relevant to linguistic analysis and has practical applications in enhancing communication effectiveness across diverse social and cultural settings.
