Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of pin tool turn speed and pin tool diameter on strong shear and macro structure on the friction stir welding dissimilar high-density polyethylene and polypropylene sheets. Variations in welding process parameters used in this study were: rotary speed of 980, 1560, 2360 rpm, and pin tool diameter of 4 and 5 mm. The shape of the cylinder pin, the feeding speed of 11 mm/min, and the plunge depth of 7.8 mm were maintained constant. The results showed that the highest shear strength value was obtained on the connection with a rotary speed of 1560 rpm and a pin tool diameter of 5 mm 4.8 N / mm2 or 23.71% of the tensile strength of raw material high density polyethylene. Observations of macro structures show that the pin tool diameter 5 mm has only slight defects in the stir zone.

Abstract

The study investigates the impact of rotational tool speed on the mechanical properties and microstructure of aluminum-cooper friction stir-welded joints. It found that higher rotational speed leads to increased grain size, possibly due to increased heat production. Higher hardness values in the stir zone result from uniform dispersion of smaller copper particles. The study found that 540 rpm yields the maximum hardness value in the stir zone, measuring 67 VHN. However, higher speed results in defects like voids, cracks, and intermetallic compounds (IMCs), which are linked to the formation of IMCs at elevated temperatures. The optimal welding conditions at 550 rpm balance grain refinement, hardness enhancement, and defect mitigation, contributing to the understanding of welding process parameters.

Abstract

Welding technology has significantly developed in the industrial sector along with advances in manufacturing technology. The demand for joining methods combining dissimilar metals is increasing in the industrial sector. However, joining dissimilar metals is challenging because of differences in physical and mechanical properties. Continuous drive friction welding is a solid-state joining method widely used to join dissimilar metals. The research aimed to determine the effect of variations in friction pressure on the mechanical properties of continuous drive friction welding joints with dissimilar materials, Aluminum 6061 T6 and Stainless Steel 304. The process parameters used in this welding were the friction pressures used were 30 MPa, 35 MPa, and 45 MPa. The friction time is 2 seconds, the rotation speed is 1000 rpm, and the upset pressure is 50 MPa. Then, welded joints were evaluated for Vickers microhardness and microstructure observations. Based on the research results, it shows that the temperature distribution and microstructure results show that there is a change in the hardness value of the aluminum material. In contrast, the 304 stainless steel material experiences an insignificant change in the hardness value.

Abstract

The study investigates the impact of tool rotational speed and welding configuration on the mechanical properties of friction stir welded joints of HDPE plates. The plates were cut into rectangular shapes and clamped on a metal plate for FSW welding. Two welding configurations were used: single-side welding (SS) and double-side welding (DS), with rotational speeds of 900, 1500, and 2000 rpm. The plates were subjected to tensile and bending tests, and angular distortion was also measured. The findings suggest that decreasing the tool's rotational speed to 900 rpm and using double-side welding reduces angular distortion and improves tensile and flexural strength. The study emphasizes the importance of defect reduction techniques in improving the mechanical properties of HDPE FSW joints.

Abstract

Capsule shells are generally made from gelatin. The gelatin that is spread in the world is commonly derived from pigs. This animal is forbidden to be consumed by Muslims. This issue is due to the halal aspect. Sago starch and sodium alginate are halal materials that are capable of gelatinizing. This property made it able to be molded as a capsule. This research aims to determine the formula of sago and sodium alginate as a capsule and the evaluation. Three formulas were made with the ratio of sago and sodium alginate 100%: 0% (formula 1), 50%: 50% (formula 2), and 0%: 100% (formula 3). The capsule was manually molded using a food-grade stainless steel capsule mold. The size of the capsule, weight uniformity, swelling, and disintegration time were determined for a physical evaluation. SLD was used to determine the best formula, and the validation was done using One-sample T-test. The evaluations of the capsule shell were found ranged as follows: the size specifications were 21-22 mm, the body diameter was 6.1-7.2 mm, the cap diameter was 13.6-13.8 mm, weight uniformity was 0.10-0.26 gram, the swelling test was 433-1583%, and the disintegration time was 10.20-14.43 minutes. The best formula based on the SLD of the experiment was formula 3, which are two parameters that met the requirements, i.e., swelling and disintegration time. The sago and sodium alginate were crosslinked, and the capsule was made. However, the performance dislike of gelatin capsules. Continued research shall be done to find the optimum formula and its characteristics for alternative material on halal capsules.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of welding time on the tensile load capacity of spot TIG welds using stainless steel and low carbon steel plates (100 mm × 30 mm × 0.8 mm) as per AWS D8.9 standards. A constant welding current of 90 A was applied, with 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-seconds welding times. Tensile properties, microstructure, and hardness were analyzed using a universal tensile machine, an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope, and a Vickers hardness tester. Results show that the tensile load capacity increases with welding time, peaking at 4 seconds (≈4300 N), before dropping significantly at 5 seconds (≈4000 N) due to overheating, which weakens the joint. The findings highlight the critical role of optimizing welding time to maximize joint strength while preserving the material's microstructure. Overextended welding times compromise performance, emphasizing the balance required for achieving durable welds.
