Abstract

Abstract

This study examines English teachers’ competency practices, perceptions, challenges, and expectations regarding the integration of local cultural values into English language teaching (ELT) in South Sulawesi. Using a descriptive qualitative design supported by quantitative indicators, the research investigates how teachers incorporate digital media, multimodal resources, and culturally relevant materials, and how these practices contribute to culturally responsive pedagogy. The findings show that teachers increasingly adopt digital tools, such as social media, YouTube, and e-modules, to facilitate contextual and multimodal learning, reflecting a shift toward technology-supported and student-centered approaches. Teachers also demonstrate positive perceptions toward culture-based instruction, acknowledging its role in enhancing engagement, cultural awareness, and identity development. However, several challenges remain, including limited technological facilities, insufficient professional training, time constraints in preparing digital cultural materials, and the scarcity of authentic local cultural resources. Additional barriers include learners' reduced cultural awareness and the influence of globalization, which diminishes interest in local values. Teachers propose several recommendations, including the development of culturally grounded teaching materials, sustained professional development aligned with TPACK principles, stronger curriculum support, improved school infrastructure, and increased community involvement in cultural learning. Overall, this study highlights that successfully integrating local culture into ELT requires coordinated efforts across pedagogical, technological, and institutional domains to ensure sustainable, culturally meaningful, and contextually relevant English language learning practices.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers' perceptions of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in the context of teaching English writing at Indonesian secondary schools. Through semi-structured interviews with three English teachers who working in SMA Insan Cendekia Seych Yusuf, the research revealed a complex interplay of beliefs regarding the effectiveness and challenges of implementing TBLT. The findings indicated that while teachers generally recognize the potential of TBLT to enhance student engagement and improve writing skills, significant barriers remain. These include students' readiness for collaborative tasks, institutional constraints related to an exam-oriented curriculum, and the need for professional development to equip teachers with the necessary skills for effective TBLT implementation. The study highlights the importance of addressing these challenges through targeted training and curriculum alignment to facilitate the successful integration of TBLT in language education. Ultimately, the insights gained contribute to the growing body of literature on TBLT and underscore the need for further research to explore effective strategies for overcoming barriers to its implementation.

Abstract

This study is a type of correlational research that aims to determine the correlation between reading comprehension ability and students' English learning outcomes. The population in this study was all students of class VIII of SMPN 26 Makassar, with the number of samples of this study being 32 students. The data collection technique for this study was using tests and documentation as research instruments. The data analysis technique used in this study was descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis. Based on the data analysis, the results of the study were reading comprehension ability with a percentage of 62% in the good category and English learning outcomes with a percentage of 82% in the excellent category. The results of the inferential statistical analysis obtained r_count of 0.525 with a significance of 5% and r_table of 0.361, so that r_count (0.525) > r_table (0.361). Thus, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted; it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension ability and students' English learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of reward stamps on students’ participation in learning English and to explore how they affect that participation. This study used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design conducted at UPTD SMAN 1 Polewali, involving 32 students as questionnaire respondents (18 statements) and 5 students as interview participants, selected using purposive random sampling techniques. The questionnaire analysis results show that most items are in the high category (55.6%), followed by the medium category (33.3%), and the very high category (11.1%), with no items in the low or very low categories, indicating that students' responses to the use of reward stamps tend to be positive. The interview findings reinforced the quantitative results, in which students showed increased confidence, courage in expressing and responding to opinions, mutual respect, and responsibility in completing tasks individually and in groups. In addition, reward stamps also increased students' motivation to learn because students felt appreciated for their efforts. Thus, the application of reward stamps showed a positive contribution in increasing student participation and supporting the creation of a more active and enjoyable English learning atmosphere.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to identify the vocabulary teaching strategies used by English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Wasuponda. This study is a qualitative descriptive research design with data collection techniques in the form of classroom observations. The participants of this study were three English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Wasuponda. The results of the observations showed that teachers applied various vocabulary teaching strategies categorized into four groups: de-contextualizing strategies (word lists, flashcards, and dictionary use), semi-contextualizing strategies (word grouping, association, visual imagery, aural imagery, keyword, physical response, physical sensation, and semantic mapping), fully-contextualizing strategies (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), and adaptable strategies (structured reviewing). However, the findings also indicate that not all teachers implemented all of these strategies. Some strategies were applied only by certain teachers depending on their teaching preferences, classroom situations, and students’ learning needs. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Wasuponda employ a variety of vocabulary teaching strategies to support students’ vocabulary development, although the implementation of these strategies varies among teachers.
