Abstract

This community service activity aimed to apply tissue culture techniques for developing high-quality seedlings of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Cotoni seaweed) at the Marine Aquaculture Center (BPBL) Laboratory in Ambon. The methods involved the preparation of solid and liquid PES-based media, sterilization of tools and materials, and maintenance of micropropagules and plantlets under aseptic conditions. Observations focused on media quality, plantlet growth, and subculture frequency. Results showed that P2.5NW1PW1T and SM FITO media supported optimal plantlet development with low mortality rates, while media with high hormone concentrations induced plantlet death. The findings emphasize the importance of media formulation and water quality monitoring in tissue culture success. This program demonstrated a practical contribution to the sustainable cultivation technology of seaweed aquaculture.

Abstract

Healthcare facilities have the potential to be reservoirs for various pathogenic microorganisms that can cause nosocomial infections. The presence of microorganisms on the surfaces of medical devices, treatment rooms, and ambient air can increase the risk of disease transmission to patients and healthcare workers. This study aims to identify and characterize pathogenic microorganisms found in healthcare environments. The study used a descriptive laboratory design with an observational approach. Samples were taken from treatment table surfaces, door handles, medical devices, and room air using swab and air sedimentation methods. Identification was carried out through culture examination, Gram staining, and biochemical tests. The results showed the presence of pathogenic bacterial isolates such as Staphylococcus aureus. aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Some isolates showed resistance to certain antibiotics. It was concluded that healthcare environments have the potential to be a source of infection transmission, necessitating strict infection monitoring and control.

Abstract

Local food has great potential as a source of functional food that plays a role in improving health quality and supporting regional food security. However, students' understanding of healthy food and the use of local food is still limited. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of students at SMP Negeri 5 Ambon regarding the optimization of local food as functional food, as well as encourage the formation of positive attitudes towards local food consumption. The methods used included educational and participatory socialization, and evaluation. The results of the activity showed that before the socialization, only about 30% of students were able to explain the concept of healthy food in general and less than 25% knew the function of local food as functional food. After the activity, students' understanding increased, as indicated by approximately 80% of students being able to explain the concept of functional food simply and 75% being able to identify examples of local food that have health benefits. In addition, approximately 70% of students were actively involved in discussions related to daily food consumption habits. This activity is expected to raise students' awareness to utilize local food as a healthy and nutritious alternative.

Abstract

Excessive consumption of sopi in the long term can cause various chronic diseases such as kidney failure. This study aims to determine the potential of African leaf ethanol extract in repairing sopi-induced kidney damage in white rats. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments. The sample was 18 mice. Groups of mice K (-), K (+), P1, P2 and P3 were induced with 1.28 ml of sopi/animal. K (+) mice were given Furosemide as a comparison. Groups P1, P2 and P3 were given ethanol extract of African leaves at doses of 1.28, 2.56 and 5.12 ml/head/day respectively. The results obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) then followed by the Tukey HSD post hoc test. The results of the study showed that there was an effect of reducing creatinine levels and improving kidney damage in white mice due to administration of African leaf ethanol extract, where the effective dose was 2.56ml/head/day. So it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of African leaves at a dose of 2.56 ml/head/day has the potential to reduce creatinine levels and repair sopi-induced kidney damage in white rats, the results of which are also the same as those shown by the drug Furosemide. However, giving higher doses will be toxic to the body.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Endophytic bacteria are microorganisms that live within plant tissues without causing damage to their host plants. These bacteria are known to produce various secondary metabolites that have potential as antibacterial agents. Herbal plants, as a source of bioactive compounds, also have the potential to serve as habitats for endophytic bacteria that produce antimicrobial compounds. This study aims to characterize endophytic bacteria from herbal plants and evaluate their antibacterial activity against human pathogenic microorganisms. The study used the method of isolating endophytic bacteria from herbal plant tissues, followed by antibacterial activity testing using the disc diffusion method against pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The results showed that several endophytic bacterial isolates were able to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria with inhibition zones ranging from 10–18 mm. This indicates that endophytic bacteria from herbal plants have potential as a source of natural antibacterial compounds.

The aim of this activity is to provide education on the potential of fish resources to increase children's nutritional knowledge and immunity. The method used is lecture and discussion with a participatory approach. The material is given in the form of presentations or lectures, as well as watching videos about the benefits of consuming fish and its processed products. This activity was carried out at SMP Negeri 6 Maluku Tengah, Haruku Island, Central Maluku Regency. The result of implementing the activity is that children have insight and knowledge of fish processing models, nutritional value in increasing immunity. The evaluation results based on the post test show that the source of fish for consumption is 60% of the catch, 100% of the fish obtained is fresh, and the reason for consuming fish is to improve health by 45%, and the traditional processing model is 89% in the form of yellow sauce fish dishes 44%.
