Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Cattle farming in Indonesia, especially in North Sumatra, is still a secondary livelihood for breeders. Treatment and processing of beef are generally done in the traditional way. The success of the beef cattle business is very dependent on the fulfillment of nutrients that affect livestock health. Therefore, quality and sustainable feed is an important factor in livestock cultivation technology. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fermented feed on cattle weight at a small cattle farm in Pondok Rawa Village, Deli Serdang Regency, Sumatera Utara. Fermented feed is formulated by mixing corn ash and palm oil cake (5:1), coarse salt, molasses, and EM4 into chlorine-free water. The feed was stored in PP plastic and incubated for 7 days. Five cows chosen randomly were given fermented feed every day for 1 month while the other 5 cows were only given forage. All test cattle were about 4 years old and weighed weekly and the data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA in JASP 0.16.4. The results showed that the average weight gain of one cattle fed with fermented feed (1.54 kg/week) was higher than forage treatment (0.69 kg/week). This result was validated and substantiated by ANOVA test result showing that value of p < 0.05.

Abstract

Fisheries management, which focuses on using fisheries resources to improve the livelihood of the fishing communities, has led to over-exploitation of fish resources on the east coast of North Sumatra. This has led to a decline in the potential of some fish species, which in turn has affected fishermen's incomes. This study aims to identify the socio-economic conditions of fishermen through the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) and the factors that influence them. The data used are primary and secondary data, collected through observation, interviews, and literature studies. The study involved a sample of 64 fishermen from three locations along the eastern coast of Sumatra: Medan, Serdang Bedagai, and Deli Serdang. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and the EAFM approach to analyze the social and economic conditions of fishermen in Medan, Deli Serdang, and Serdang Bedagai. The results of this study indicate that there has been a decline in the number of fishermen and the capture fisheries production at the research sites. The score of the social domain scored 55.55 (moderate), while the economic domain scored 66.67 (good) indicating effective but improvable management. The research results show that the indicators of stakeholder participation, utilization of local knowledge for fisheries management, asset ownership, and demand for fishery products are in the good category, while the indicators of fisheries conflicts and fishermen's household income are in the poor category, which needed to be the focus for improvement and enhancement.

Abstract

Plastic waste that is not managed properly will damage the environment by polluting the ecosystem. Plastic in waters can turn into micro-sized plastic waste. Plastics whose size is less than 5 mm are called microplastics. The emergence of microplastic pollutants is caused by increasing population activity in Percut Waters. Percut waters are waters located in the coastal area of North Sumatra where there are many anthropogenic activities that cause the emergence of microplastics. Microplastics can have a negative impact on exposed marine biota. Nowadays microplastics are not only found in the environment, but can also accumulate in the bodies of organisms, for example. This research aims to determine the abundance of microplastics in fish found in Percut waters. The research was carried out in October November 2022 in Percut Waters. Fish samples were caught using nets and the samples were separated from their digestive tract and diluted with the addition of NaCl and H2O2 lauric. The average abundance of microplastics in fish samples ranged from 24294 particles. The fish species where the most microplastics were found was mullet fish with 294 particles. The most common types of microplastics found in total are fiber microplastics. Keywords:MicroplasticDigestionCoastalPercut
