Abstract

"In 'Tarian Bumi,' the narrative vividly portrays Balinese women's defiance against the entrenched patriarchal norms of their society. The protagonist, Ida Ayu Telaga, emerges as a symbol of courage, challenging the oppressive customs that confine women's autonomy and expression. This research endeavors to delve into the diverse manifestations of Balinese women's resistance against patriarchal hegemony, employing a feminist lens. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study mines the rich textual landscape of 'Tarian Bumi' for instances of women's defiance. The methodology involves a meticulous examination of the novel, supplemented by insights from various secondary sources such as books, theses, articles, and news reports on women's struggles against patriarchy. Through a process of data reduction, classification, and validation, the researcher identifies recurring themes of resistance encoded within the text. The findings underscore a spectrum of challenges, encompassing traditional gender roles, marital expectations, familial constraints, religious and social inequalities, and instances of gender-based violence. These acts of resistance are articulated through diverse mediums including written expressions, philosophical reflections, and symbolic dances—a testament to the enduring struggle for justice. By illuminating these narratives of defiance, the research serves as a catalyst for critical reflection, urging readers to interrogate prevailing patriarchal paradigms and advocate for gender equity."

Abstract

This study explored the enhancement of students' reading comprehension in language learning through the application of the Jigsaw method in university environments. Employing a qualitative research approach, data regarding the improvement of students' reading comprehension quality were gathered from students enrolled at Muhammadiyah Bhuton University, Gorontalo State University, and Muhammadiyah Mataram University. Data collection utilized the observe-participant conversation method, wherein the researcher observed the enhancement of students' reading abilities across multiple campuses. Additionally, interviews with students and lecturers were conducted to investigate research problems, with recording and note-taking techniques employed to ensure data accuracy. Reflective introspective methods were further employed, engaging both the researcher and informants in discourse based on their respective experiences. The collected data underwent reduction, classification, and verification based on their types. Subsequently, the data were tabulated through the assignment of codes to each piece of information, followed by interpretation. The research findings revealed that the improvement of students' reading abilities in Indonesian language courses at Muhammadiyah Bhuton University progressed smoothly and effectively. Furthermore, the enhancement of Arabic language reading abilities at Muhammadiyah Mataram University was broader and more intensive, while the improvement of English language reading abilities at Gorontalo State University contributed to enhanced comprehension of English texts. The practical implications of these findings suggest that cooperative approaches like the Jigsaw method can serve as effective alternatives for enhancing students' reading comprehension abilities in university settings

Abstract

As globalization continues to accelerate, the need for English proficiency among healthcare professionals has become increasingly crucial, especially in the context of international and multicultural healthcare services. This study examines healthcare professionals' perceptions of the importance of English language training in their professional practice in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and administrative staff, working at two international hospitals in Jakarta. The main objective of this study is to understand the need for English language training, the challenges faced in acquiring language proficiency, and recommendations for improving English language training programs tailored to the medical context. The results of the study show that most participants acknowledge the important role of English in enhancing patient care, workplace efficiency, and professional development. The main challenges identified include the lack of specific English for Medical Purposes (EMP) programs, limited time due to busy work schedules, and psychological barriers such as lack of confidence and fear of making mistakes. While general English courses are available, participants highlighted their inadequacy in meeting the specific language demands of the medical field, such as medical terminology, patient interactions, and professional communication. Participants recommended the development of EMP courses tailored to real-world medical scenarios, flexible training schedules, and collaborative learning methods such as role-playing. They emphasized that addressing these gaps in training would not only improve communication skills but also contribute to better healthcare outcomes. This study provides valuable insights into the role of English in the medical field and stresses the need for evidence-based curriculum design that accommodates the unique needs of healthcare professionals. Additionally, the study offers practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and hospital administrators to enhance the effectiveness of English language training programs in medical institutions

Abstract

This study examines how women's language features are used in press interviews conducted with Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. This research draws on Lakoff's (1975) theory, which outlines ten characteristics of women's language and seeks to identify the linguistic features that emerge from the spontaneous speech of both artists. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach by studying statements from six press line interview videos retrieved from YouTube. It then prioritized the data with lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, precise color term, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite form, avoidance of strong words and emphatic stress using Lakoff classification criteria. The findings reveal that several features frequently appear in the interviews, particularly lexical hedges or fillers, intensifiers, empty adjectives, and emphatic stress. These features reflect the spontaneous and natural speaking style of the artists in media settings. The study does not aim to compare the two singers or evaluate which one uses more women’s language features; rather, it describes how each artist demonstrates linguistic patterns associated with women’s language in unscripted public interactions. The results contribute to sociolinguistic discussions on language and gender, particularly in contemporary media discourse involving young female celebrities.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative descriptive case‑study approach grounded in participatory observation of daily interactions, taped dialogue transcripts, and semi-structured parent interviews to analyze the pragmatic techniques of Zalva, a three-year-old child, through the lenses of Dardjowidjojo and Dworetzsky. By systematically coding and thematically analyzing naturalistic data, the research reveals that Zalva demonstrates sophisticated strategies such as giving advice, shifting topics, and offering reflective responses to social conventions. For instance, she counsels her father to refrain from consuming cold drinks and adeptly counters indirect criticism by asserting, “Zalva is occupied, please do not interrupt me.” These findings align with Dardjowidjojo’s emphasis on social and cultural interaction and Dworetzsky’s focus on cognitive adaptation in context. Practically, parents are encouraged to model directive and reflective speech acts during routine exchanges, while early‑childhood educators can incorporate role‑play and guided dialogue activities to foster children’s pragmatic competence. Future research should extend this case‑study framework to diverse cultural settings to deepen our understanding of early pragmatic development and its applications in educational and caregiving contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the use of figurative language in the song lyrics of Niki Zefanya. This study focuses on five selected songs: La La Lost You, Lowkey, Every Summertime, High School in Jakarta, and I Like U. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a library research approach, data were collected through intensive reading of relevant literature and the lyrics of the selected songs. The analysis process was carried out in three stages: identification, classification, and interpretation of the figurative language found in the lyrics. This research applies the theory of figurative language proposed by Kennedy and Gioia (2007), which includes various types such as metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and symbolism. The findings reveal that Niki Zefanya frequently uses figurative language to express emotions and enhance the artistic quality of her lyrics. Specifically, the study found four instances of metaphor, two instances of personification, five instances of hyperbole, and two instances of symbolism. These figurative expressions contribute significantly to the depth and aesthetic value of her songwriting. This study highlights the richness of language in contemporary music and provides insight into literary devices in pop culture.
