Abstract

Prevention of iron deficiency anemia in Indonesia using ferrous sulfas blood-added tablets started since 1997. But iron deficiency anemia is still high, also in young women. Young women are vulnerable because of rapid growth and unhealthy their consumption patterns, which rarely consume fruits and vegetables that are a source of vitamin C. The purpose of this study was to analyze the addition of vitamin C in iron supplementation + folic acid to serum ferritin levels in adolescents females anemia. This research was an experimental quasi research. Design of research was Randomized Pre Post Test Control Group Design, with Double Blind treatment. This study had one treatment group and one control group, each group of 11 samples. The samples were chosen randomly with inclusion and exclusion. The collected data was processed using SPSS program with the analysis of paired t-test and independent t-test to test the difference of serum ferritin level. The results was showed the characteristics of respondents: age (p = 0.430), education of mother (p = 0.942) and nutritional knowledge of respondents (p = 0.928) in the same condition or both groups were had homogeneous characteristics. The pattern and level of food consumption were showed no different between control and traetment groups (p> 0.05). Serum ferritin levels showed difference between the two groups after treatment (p = 0.004). The study was showed vitamin C had role in increasing iron absorption and fill in storage of ferritin formation. Keywords: Anemia, Vitamin C, Iron supplement, Ferritin

Abstract

Exposure to psychological stress can cause oxidative stress. Provision of exogenous antioxidants is expected to reduce the occurrence of oxidative stress. Green tea with its active ingredient Epigalocatechin Galat is considered to reduce the occurrence of oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the administration of green tea (EGCG) on the effect decreasing MDA levels against Wistar Strain (Rattus norvegicus) white rats exposed to psychological stress; with Randomized Post Test design of only group design by grouping into 5 groups, with control group and treatment group. Administration of steeping green tea (EGCG) with a single dose. To find out the significant influence of the independent variable on a set of variable group tested Manova. Post hoc testing using LSD (Least Significance Different) was performed to see significant differences between groups. Abstract

Coffee drinking is a habit that still doubtful for it’s benefits. Many active ingredients in robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) are very useful for health, especially the antioxidant content that can ward off free radicals that absorbed in the body. Free radicals can be caused by psychological stress exposure. Excessive amounts of radicals in the body cause oxidative stress. This study aimed to see the robusta coffee effect on decreasing levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA) with “randomized post test only control group” design with 25 samples of white male rat strain wistar (Rattus norvegicus). Samples were divided into 5 groups: control groups and randomized treatment groups. Treatment given in psychological stress and giving robusta coffee drink with single dose. This study used “one way anova” test and followed by “pos hoc tukey HSD” test for statistics. Robusta coffee had an effect in MDA levels changing. There was a MDA levels decreasing in 1 hour after robusta coffee drinking in experimental rats with oxidative stress conditions that were exposed by psychological stress. Abstract

This study analyzed young dates (Phoenix dactylifera) effect on blood glucose in alloxan-induced male wistar rats. It used a completely randomized design with pre-post test and control group design. The research samples were 25 male white wistar rats that divided into 5 groups: (1) negative control group with no treatment (K1); positive control group with alloxan induction only (K2); treatment group 1 with alloxan induction and 0.25 g/day of young dates treatment (P1); treatment group 2 with alloxan induction and 0.5 g/day of young dates treatment (P2); and treatment group 3 with alloxan induction and 1 g/day of young dates treatment (P3). The result were tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test (p>0.05), Levene's homogeneity test (p>0.05), followed by General Multivariate Manova test by Wilks' Lambda, between-subject effect test, and LSD (p<0.05). The results indicated that young dates could effectively reduced the blood glucose levels (p = 0.000). The fasting blood glucose level in positive control group (K2) was different from negative control group (K1, p = 0.000) and all treatment groups (P1, p = 0.000, P2, p = 0.000 and P3, p = 0.000). 0.25 g/day of young dates treatment could effectively reduced the fasting blood glucose level in alloxan-induced male wistar rats. Abstract

Chocolate is a healthy food. The active ingredient in chocolate (Theobroma cacao L.), especially antioxidants, can counteract the free radicals present in the body. This study aimed to determine the effect of cocoa liquor on increased activity of Superoxyde Dismutase (SOD). The study design was randomized post test only control group with 20 samples of male white rats wistar (Rattus norvegicus). The sample was divided into 4 groups: 2 control groups and 2 treatment groups. The treatments provided were instantaneous physical activity and cocoa liquor preparation with a single dose. This study used one way anova and continued with post hoc tukey HSD test for statistic. The results showed that cocoa liquor had an effect on SOD activity. SOD activity increased in treatment group with cocoa liquor either 2 hours or 24 hours before the momentary physical activity. Keywords: Cocoa liquor, Superoxide dismutase, Oxidative stress

Abstract

Dayak onions (Eleutherine Palmifolia (L.) Merr.) bulb stem contains phtyochemical contents, which act as antidiabetic compounds, such as eleutherol, eleuthocide A, and eleutherinoside B, as well as antioxidant compounds, which include triterpenoid, poliphenol, and flavonoid. Dayak onions was able to be used as the antidiabetic, since it had the ability to lower the blood glucose level and prevent from the free radicals, thus supressing the oxidative stress condition. This research had purpose to analyze the effect of Dayak onions bulbstem as antioxidant and anti diabetic drugs. The research used experimental method with the population in this research was 25 male white mice strain wistar. The concentration of Dayak onions bulb-stem extracts were 300mg.kgBW-1, 400mg.kgBW-1, and 500mg.kgBW-1. Data analysis used Tukey HSD Test with 95% of significance degree and was continued using manova test (average group ratio test). The result showed that. the extract of Dayak onions bulb-stem had the antidiabetical and antioxidant activity, which could lower the blood glucose levels and malondialdehid on the male white mice strain Wistar with the optimum effective doze of 500 mg.kgBW-1.Keywords: Dayak onions bulb-stem, Blood glucose level, Malondialdehid (MDA)

Abstract

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by the imbalance between the production of free radicals or ROS and the antioxidants; the level of free radicals is higher than the antioxidants. Exhaustive exercise is one of the causes of this oxidative stress. However, it can be reduced by antioxidants found in purple sweet potatoes (PSP) (Ipomoea batatas L). This study aims to evaluate the effect of two weeks supplementation of PSP extract on rats inducedoxidative stress. Twenty rats were distibuted into four groups consisted five rats each. Rats in the treatments groups were administered PSP extract for two weeks then were forced to swim until exhausted. Bloods from all samples were drawn to see the changes in the levels of malondialdehyde ans superoxide dismutase after two weeks of treatment. The data was then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic. The results showed that mean level of MDA and SOD differ significantly (p<0.05) between groups after the administration of PSP extract as well as after exhaustive exercise. The extracts and exhaustive exercise concurrently showed a significant effect on oxidative stress biomarkers (p<0.05). Abstract

Insulin resistance is an early sign of diabetes type 2 that occurs in situations where target organ sensitivity decreases against insulin. Excess free radicals can be mutually insulin resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine how the effects of insulin can be a determining factor. This study used case control design conducted on 22 outpatients at Clinic University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya during June until July 2017. Data were collected using questionnaires, nutritional status, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and MDA levels. Insulin resistance status using normal HOMA IR method of <2.77. Logistic Regression was used to determine the effect of free radical on the occurrence of insulin resistance. The results showed free radical against insulin resistance at =0.05 with p=0.018. That result means boosting MDA levels also increases the risk of insulin resistance. In addition, the consumption of dietary sources of fat and excessive use of food additives, low fruit intake, BMI values are also factors affecting insulin resistance with p=0.027; p=0.036; and p=0.027. Given the elevated levels of MDA-free radicals can increase the risk of insulin resistance. Applying a healthy lifestyle by consuming fiber-rich foods can prevent the formation of excessive free radicals. Keywords: Insulin resistance, Free radical, HOMA IR

Abstract

Escherichia coli are a gram-negative bacteria belonging to the normal human intestinal flora. Excessive type of E.coli pathogen bacteria could cause infectious disease for humans. In the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the small intestine, the pathogen that often causes interference is Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli. Growth of pathogenic bacteria could be inhibited by administration of sinbiotic yogurt. Synbiotic yogurt is a yogurt that is supplemented with probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics used were Lactobacillus bulgarius, Streptococcus thermophiles, Bifidobacterium bifidium with the addition of prebiotics i.e. purple sweet potato containing oligosaccharides. The aims of this study was to saw the effect of giving sinbiotic yogurt to microscopic images of the small bowel of wistar rats. This research was a laboratory experimental research. The subjects consisted of 24 wistar rats divided in the control group (6 tails) and the treatment group (18 tails) divided into 3 groups with 6 each group. The results of group I with histologic features of normal intestinal tissue, group II partial epithelial mucosal epithelium seen erosion, group III with epithelial cell surface epithelial mucosa appear normal and group IV with epithelial surface erosion but, cell regeneration was characterized by increasing goblet cells . The administration of sinbiotic yogurt given E. coli had a good effect of improving the epithelial cells of the small intestine surface by increasing goblet cells.Keywords: Escherichia coli, Sinbiotic yogurt, Small intestinal mucosa

Abstract

The number of patients with hyperglycemia in the world and in Indonesia is estimated to increase rapidly in the next 25 years. The content of cinnamaldehyde, flavonoids, polyphenols, and chromium in cinnamon thought to have an influence of hypoglycemia. This study aimed to determine the influence of cinnamon extract to a decrease of blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic rats induced by a single dose of alloxan as much as 125 mg/kg. This study was laboratory experiment by using RAL (Complete Randomize Design) with Pre-Post Test Control Group Design Research. Experimental animals used were male Wistar rats divided into 5 groups. KN was negative control group. KP was hyperglycemic positive control group. P1 was the first treatment group (a dose of 200 mg/kg). P2 was the second treatment group (a dose of 250 mg/kg). P3 was the third treatment group (a dose of 300 mg/kg). Cinnamon therapy was given orally for 14 days. The results of this research was tested statistically by using One Way ANOVA and showed that there were significant differences between the blood glucose levels in the treatment group with the positive and negative control groups. The conclusion was that the provision of cinnamon extract for 14 days could provide an influence of lowering blood glucose levels. Keywords: Blood glucose, Cinnamon, Hyperglicemia
