Abstract

Covid-19 is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and attacks the human immune system. The most common signs and symptoms are fever, cough, shortness of breath, or dyspnea. One way that can be done by the community is by using materials from nature or medicinal plants. The utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) has a positive impact on the immune system to prevent transmission of Covid-19. Community service activities are carried out through face-to-face outreach on Monday, 8 August 2022 at the Aisyiyah Orphanage, Kupang City. The application of using TOGA is expected to be able to support orphans in terms of health, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic in increasing/maintaining body immunity. Evaluation of the understanding of socialization participants is carried out by holding a short quiz at the beginning and end of the activity. The increased enthusiasm of participants in answering quizzes at the end of the activity showed an increase in knowledge regarding the use of family medicinal plants (TOGA) to increase endurance during the Covid-19 pandemic. Participants who successfully answered the quiz at the end of the activity were given a gift package as a form of appreciation for their seriousness in participating in this activity

Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection remains a public health concern in rural tropical settings, where limited sanitation and high environmental exposure elevate risk. In Mataredi Village, most residents are subsistence farmers with constrained access to improved sanitation. Objective to estimate the prevalence of STH infection and assess its association with household latrine ownership in Mataredi Village, Katikutana District, Central Sumba. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in June–July 2024. A total of 144 residents aged >5 years who met inclusion criteria were enrolled using consecutive sampling. Fresh stool samples were examined by direct smear with 2% Lugol’s iodine. The association between latrine ownership (yes/no) and STH infection status (positive/negative) was evaluated using the Chi-square test; results are presented as p-value and odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Overall prevalence of STH infection was 19.4% (28/144). The species profile was dominated by Trichuris trichiura, with both single and mixed infections detected. Based on the Chi-square test, there was no statistically significant association between latrine ownership and STH infection (p = 0.943; OR 0.88; 95% CI 0.38–2.06). A mass deworming campaign conducted in May 2024 may have reduced detectable worm burden and attenuated observed associations.  The prevalence of STH infection in Mataredi Village was 19.4%, with Trichuris trichiura predominance. No significant association was found between household latrine ownership and infection status.

Abstract

Abstract

Kematian bayi masih menjadi permasalahan kesehatan global.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a public health problem that imposes a substantial economic burden, particularly among patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) coinfection. This study aimed to analyze the differences in economic burden between TB patients with HIV and TB patients without HIV in Kupang City. This study employed an analytic observational design with a case–control approach. A total of 64 respondents were included, consisting of 34 TB–HIV patients as the case group and 34 TB patients without HIV as the control group, selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The economic burden analyzed included direct non-medical costs, indirect costs, and the occurrence of catastrophic costs. The results showed differences in the total economic burden between TB patients and TB–HIV patients in Kupang City. TB–HIV patients tended to bear a higher economic burden than TB patients without HIV. These differences were mainly driven by higher direct non-medical costs and indirect costs, particularly income loss, asset sales, and indebtedness during the treatment period. In addition, the proportion of patients experiencing catastrophic costs was higher in the TB–HIV group than in the TB group. The study demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the total economic burden between the two groups. The median direct non-medical cost among TB–HIV patients was IDR 113,500.00, which was higher than that among TB patients without HIV (IDR 17,500.00; p < 0.001). The median indirect cost among TB–HIV patients was IDR 2,450,000.00, whereas it was IDR 0.00 among TB patients without HIV (p < 0.001). A total of 23.5% of TB–HIV patients experienced catastrophic costs, while none were observed among TB patients without HIV, with a significant association between HIV status and the occurrence of catastrophic costs (p < 0.003).
