Abstract

The aim of this research was to figure out the code mixing that existed in English communication among the students while doing group discussion and to classify the types of code mixing that occurred during this speaking activity. Actually, code mixing may probably happens while English is being taught as the foreign language since we have Indonesian as our first language so that the concept of bilingualism could be built among Indonesian students. For example, the English students of Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat in 2021 Academic year, as the subjects of this research, used code mixing during the speaking activity although most of them are good enough in English. This phenomenon became the big concern for the researchers to do this research by using descriptive qualitative design, because the researchers need to analyze and to describe the types of code mixing. The data of this research are all utterances of code mixing used by the students during the discussion. The instruments were observation, field note and recording. After analyzing the data, the researchers found that there are three main types of code mixing; insertion, alternation and congruent, used by the students while doing discussion. It is hoped that the result of this research make all the teachers aware that the fluency of speaking English could not be obtain since the students allow their mother tongue interfere their English so that the teachers should find out the strategies to avoid code mixing among the students while doing speaking activities.

Through this method, specific challenges encountered by students in the writing process were identified and analyzed. The analysis revealed that students' lack of writing scientific articles format research articles is in the high category, with an average of 4.28 (85.53%). From the data, nine statements are in the very high category, and 13 are in the high category. The statements in the very high category were ‘creating research gap’ (M=4.54), ‘Describing the data collection procedure’ (M=4.50), ‘Describing data analysis procedures’ (M=4.33), 'presenting meta-textual information’ (M=4.38), ‘presenting results’ (M=4.50), ‘providing background information (M=3.58), ‘Commenting on results or findings‘ (M=4.50),‘Restating the research objectives and approach‘ (M=4.63) and ‘evaluating research contributions’ (M=4.33). Abstract

This study explored the specific needs of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) reading materials for accounting students. Since reading comprehension played a crucial role in understanding accounting texts, reports, and financial statements, the study aimed to identify which reading skills were most essential to support students’ academic and professional competence. A quantitative descriptive design was employed, and data were collected from students through a needs analysis questionnaire consisting of ten indicators of reading skills. The results showed that most of the identified reading skills, such as understanding accounting vocabulary, interpreting numerical data, recognizing text organization, and summarizing accounting information, were categorized as highly needed; with an overall mean score of 3.3. The highest mean scores (3.5) were found in identifying main ideas, recognizing text structure, and making connections between texts and accounting practice. These findings emphasized the importance of developing contextualized ESP reading materials that integrated authentic accounting texts and reflected students’ real academic and professional needs.
