Abstract

It is obvious that referencing is an essential part in scientific writing and ethical values that authors should be used in theirwork. It is strongly informed that reference avoids plagiarism and supports the author arguments. For instance, when a student wrotescientific writing, she or he should quote and cite other related literates or findings to make their writing trustworthy. In other word,it was not just collection of ideas but something authentic and scientific. It was still inchoate if a student who did her thesis withoutstating her or his sources in reference. In fact, the students frequently did not write their citations in reference. It was found that thestudents did not write the sources taken from any experts based on the guideline. They did not write down their references bydetermining the resources from the books, journals, magazine, articles, newspaper, document, thesis, and internet. Most of them onlytended to make their reference from the book. It was not moot point that students did not write about city and publisher in somecases. On the contrary, in advanced writing class, they have been taught how to quote and cite other ideas and how to write them onreferences based on guideline MLA and APA style. Meanwhile, they also had two supervisors to help them during writing their finalproject. Briefly, the result showed that a number of students did not write all their sources and not follow the rule or referenceguideline.

Abstract

This research investigated the students’ writing skill on recount text at session at session 2016 A English Department of STKIP West Sumatera. Some of them had difficulties in organization, content, grammar, mechanic, and vocabulary. Then, they really need lecturers’ correction in every step of their writing process. Therefore, the researcher applied peer editing technique as the focus of research to solve this problem. The purposes were to find whether peer editing technique can improve students’ writing skill on Recount Text and some factors influence the improvement. The methodology of research is a classroom action research (CAR). Researcher used writing test and questionnaire as the instruments. The finding of the research showed that the students’ writing skill of recount text improves through Peer Editing technique and there are four factors influenced the improvement.

Abstract

Peran guru profesional dalam pembelajaran sangat penting sebagai kunci keberhasilan belajar peserta didik dan menghasilkan lulusan yang berkualitas. Guru profesional adalah guru yang kompeten dalam membangun dan mengembangkan proses pembelajaran yang baik dan efektif sehingga dapat menghasilkan peserta didik yang pintar dan pendidikan yang berkualitas. Kualitas pembelajaran juga perlu diukur dengan penilaian yang berorientasi pada Keterampilan Berpikir Tingkat Tinggi atau Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS). Berdasarkan hasil riset dan observasi yang telah dilakukan oleh beberapa ahli, ditemukan bahwa guru-guru masih kesulitan dalam menciptakan dan membuat soal-soal yang dapat meningkatkan daya nalar siswa dan kemampuan berfikir tingkat tinggi siswa atau yang berbasis HOTS (High Order Thinking Skill). Oleh karena itu pembekalan mengenai konsep task berorientasi HOTS masih perlu dilaksanakan. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di SMP N 21 Padang kepada guru-guru Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dalam 2 tahap yaitu pemberian materi mengenai teknik penilaian berbentuk task yang berorientasi HOTS serta perancangan teknik penilaian berbentuk task yang berorientasi HOTS. Kegiatan ini bermanfaat bagi guru terutama guru Bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan pemahaman mereka mengenai bentuk dan teknik penilaian berorientasi HOTS.

Abstract

Tulisan ini menjelaskan bahasa yang digunakan serta jenis respon yang disampaikan oleh mahasiswa dalam berkomunikasi di lokal saat persentasi terjadi. Partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat di kelas Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU ). Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti melakukan pengamatan dengan merekam proses belajar mengajar yang dilakukan di kelas CCU. Kemudian, peneliti mendapatkan beberapa data dari pengamatan yang telah dilakukan. Dalam mengkomunikasikan materi presentasi pada umumnya disampaikan secara lisan dengan bantuan powerpoint. Penulis menemukan siswa cenderung menggunakan bahasa buku dan internet tanpa menjelaskan dengan bahasa mereka sendiri, peneliti juga menemukan respon yang berbeda-beda saat persentasi. Mahasiswa merespon dengan menggunakan confrimation dan disconfirmation response terhadap materi persentasi yang disajikan. Di dalam confirmation mahasiswa merespon dengan cara  direct acknowledgement, positive feeling, clarifying and agreeing response. Selanjutnya siswa merespon dengan cara impervious, irrelevant, interrupting, incoherent, and incongruous response untuk tipe disconfirmation.Namun, respon yang banyak dilakukan mahasiswa adalah disconfirmation response. Dengan temuan ini, peneliti menyarankan kepada setiap dosen dan guru yang mengajar dengan sistem membagi siswa dalam beberapa kelompok tidak hanya memberikan tugas membuat powerpoint pada kelompok yang akan tampil. Singkatnya, setiap kelompok membuat powerpoint dan siap tampil sebab kelompok yang tampil dilot sesaat sebelum kelas persentasi dimulai.

Abstract

Reading was an activitythat could not be separated  from teaching andlearning activities. It cause the textbook was one of source in learning. In this case, each reading texts had different difficulties, so it was important for teacehrs to chose appropriate text for students so they would comprehended the text. Based on the phenomenon, the researchers interested to conduct a study that aimed to classified the readability of reading text on English textbook entitled "Pathway to English" for class XI for interest group. The researchers found 22 reading text. This study used a descriptive research method with a quantitative approach. In calculating the readability level, the researchers used the Flesch Reading Ease formula (6 levels). The result of readability level analysis on reading texts showed there were 6 categorizes of readability levels, namely easy, fairly easy, standard, fairly difficult, difficult and very difficult. The classification of reading texts were easy 2 texts, fairly easy 2 texts, standard 7 texts, fairly difficult 6 texts, difficult 4 texts and very difficult 1 text.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were obviously to determine the most and least commonly used vocabulary learning strategies by the students. In addition, it was to identify the reasons behind their use of these strategies. An explanatory mixed-method research design was employed, with the population consisting 3 translation classes in English Department Students at Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat in the odd semester, academic year 2019/2020. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews, using the Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire which contained 40 statements. Descriptive statistics, such as means and standard deviation, were used for statistical analysis. The findings indicated that determination strategies (M=3.32) were the most frequently used vocabulary learning strategies by students, while social consolidation strategies (M=1.82) were the least used. Furthermore, the study explored the reasons behind the students' most and least used strategies. It was found that the students' preferred strategy of using dictionaries to find the meaning of new words was due to its ease and effectiveness, whereas the least used strategy of interacting with native speakers to find new words was limited by the availability of context and vocabulary knowledge.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis-jenis nilai moral yang terkandung dalam lagu-lagu yang terdapat dalam buku teks siswa When English a Bell untuk kelas VII SMP. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik analisis isi untuk menganalisis jenis-jenis nilai moral yang terkandung dalam lagu. Ada empat lagu yang tercetak di buku teks yaitu Good Morning, How are You, What a Wonderful World, dan Count on Me. Peneliti melakukan analisis dengan menggunakan analisis dokumen sebagai instrumen untuk melihat jenis-jenis nilai moral yang ditemukan berdasarkan teori yang dipilih. Hasil analisis data, peneliti menemukan bahwa ada tiga jenis nilai moral yang terkandung dalam lagu, yaitu kesantunan, religi, dan solidaritas. Peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa nilai-nilai tersebut dapat diimplementasikan oleh siswa dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Lagu dapat dijadikan sebagai media yang menarik untuk menyampaikan nilai-nilai moral kepada siswa sesuai dengan capaian kurikulum 2013.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze and figure out the students’ error in writing technical skills based on the STAR method. This is really crucial in order to make the students learn from their writing errors based on STAR method and the teacher is strongly able to help them properly. This study was qualitative with a number of subjects were 15 students who joined the Digital Talent Scholarship 2020 by KOMINFO. Content test based on STAR method carried out to identify the error made by the students. The result of this study was categorized into four levels of error. First, the highest percentage of error was T (Task) 36 %. The second was action (A) with 16 % error in writing technical skill with action. Next was the result, R, with 4 % and the last was the situation with 1.3%. Based on the writer observation in teaching bath 3 DTS 2020, error happened because some of the students did not attend the first meeting of the course. The second reason, error could happen because the students are still confused to distinguish between personality traits and introducing self and technical skills. The last reason was the internet connection during the training done via zoom.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh keinginan peneliti untuk melihat ketertarikan mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan YouTube dalam belajar bahasa Inggris di Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian descriptive qualitative method dengan data yang diambil dari angket ketertarikan mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan YouTube dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Jumlah responden dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 67 mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa Inggris yaitu kelas A dan kelas B tahun ajaran 2020/2021. Penelitian ini menggunakan total sampling dalam pengambilan sample. A structured item questionnaire digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk teknik pengumpulan data. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan cara membagikan angket ke 67 mahasiswa melalui Google Form. Hasil analisa data memperlihatkan bahwa  YouTube memberikan faktor yang bagus terhadap ketertarikan mahasiswa. Mahasiswa senang dan tertarik dalam belajar bahasa Inggris menggunakan YouTube, sehingga menstimulasi dan menarik minat mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Mahasiswa dapat belajar dan mengulang pelajaran menggunakan YouTube di manapun dan kapanpun karena YouTube mudah diakses dan digunakan . YouTube mampu memberikan pelajaran yang ter-update bagi mahasiwa. YouTube juga membantu mahasiswa untuk belajar secara mandiri di rumah. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa YouTube memberikan faktor yang baik terhadap minat dan ketertarikan mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini  bertujuan untuk mencari faktor kesulitan yang dominan dalam memahami bacaan yang dihadapi oleh siswa kelas X OTKP di SMK N 3 Padang. Teknik pengambilan data yang digunakan adalah random sampling. Instrumen penelitian adalah angket dan wawancara. Sampel pada penelitian ini berjumlah 26 siswa dan diminta untuk mengisi angket yang terdiri 10 items.. Berdasarkan angket yang dibagikan pada siswa, 84,6 % diantaranya memiliki kesulitan dalam memahami kosa kata. Sementara itu, 50% siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami bacaan karena teks bacaan yang terlalu panjang. Selanjutnya, 53,8 % siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam strategi membaca. Berdasarkan hasil persentasi dari ketiga level tersebut maka level yang paling dominan dalam kesulitan memahmi bacaan adalah penguasaan kosa kata.Keywords: Reading, Students difficult, Reading comprehension
