Abstract

In teaching and learning process of the L2, the use of L1 in mediating the learning is needed to be considered. Therefore, this article aimed at finding out the support of the translanguaging on TEFL since translanguaging is the way of functioning L1 in teaching L2. The qualitative method was done in this research. The subjects were two English lecturers of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in English Teaching and Training Department. The data were collected through interviewing and observing those two lecturers in the classroom teaching and learning process. Then, in addition to the data, those lecturers’ students were interviewed in order to dig their perception of the used of translanguaging in the L2 acquiring process. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. In the research findings there were five types of translanguaging as the way of the L1 and the L2 interacted each other in the classroom that used by the lecturers in teaching and learning process. Besides, there were ten functions of translanguaging as the action toward the L1 and the L2 in the classroom. Furthermore, translanguaging gives the support on TEFL in the classroom context.

Abstract

Abstract Developing oral English communication proficiency for English major students is something usual, but for non-English major students who required to be proficient in oral English communication is obviously unusual. The questions that might arise are what strategies they apply to be proficient, how they apply those strategies and what makes those strategies useful or valuable for them. Therefore, the research questions for this problem are (i) What learning strategies are used by Civil Aviation Safety and Engineering Academy (CASEA) students in developing oral English communication? (ii) How do learning strategies facilitate CASEA students to be successful in English oral communication? (iii) What conditions are valuable for developing CASEA students’ English oral communication? The research aims at (i) Examining the learning strategies used by CASEA students in learning English. (ii) Exploring the ways learning strategies facilitate the CASEA students’ English oral communication. (iii) Exploring the conditions which valuable for developing students’ English oral communication. The research is applying qualitative research in the form of case study. The results of this study reveal that (i) the cadets in CASEA Makassar employed five strategies to develop their oral communication proficiency namely preparing production strategies, encouraging production strategies, effective production strategies, comprehension reaction strategies, and reinforcing comprehension strategies. (ii) Each of the employed strategies was facilitated the students to be proficient in oral English communication in certain way. It starts from collecting and organizing ideas (by preparing production strategies), lowering tense (by encouraging production strategies), covering limitations (by effective production strategies), understanding people’s ideas (by comprehension reaction strategies), and ensuring comprehension (by reinforcing comprehension strategies). (iii) Developing English oral communication can be maximal by the support of six conditions both internally and externally. The conditions are the presence of (1) certain motivation types, (2) extroverted personality, (3) prior English experience and preference in an English skill or element, (4) institutional policies, (5) supportive atmosphere, (6) media. Abstract

ABSTRACT An effective English language teacher has different characteristics from an ordinary one. This research was conducted to reveal the characteristics of effective English language teachers in Makassar and the backgrounds of effective English language teachers that contribute to develop their abilities in teaching. This research applied a qualitative research method using case study approach. The findings of this research show that the characteristics of effective English language teachers in Makassar are divided into several categories; professional competence, pedagogical competence, social competence, personal qualities, and intra and intercultural awareness. Effective English language teachers emphasized their characteristics mostly on professional and pedagogical competence while the students categorized their teachers based on their personal qualities. In terms of personal background, there are several characteristics that could be concluded, they were inspired by their teachers that make them interested in English and become English teachers, they have positive attitudes toward English since they were students, and the second and the third research subject come from teachers’ family while the first research subject does not come from teachers’ family, but they all admitted that their families have important roles to their career as teachers. Abstract

This research is conducted to find out: (1) whether the use of macromedia flash animation enhance students’ writing skill or not; (2) the students’ interest in English writing class using macromedia flash animation; (3) whether student’s interest have relationship to student’s writing ability or not.The research employs quasi-experimental method. The sample consists of 51 students which belongs to two groups; 27 students in experimental group and 24 students in control group. The data are collected by writing test (pre-test and post-test) and questionnaire which is analyzed through SPSS 20.0. In conducting the research, the researcher applies macromedia flash animation as the medium to experimental group while the teacher in the control group uses power point presentation. The research results indicated that macromedia flash animation can enhance students’ English writing skill at the seventh grade students of SMP Yapis 1 Fakfak-West Papua in academic year 2014/2015. Although the mean score of experimental group is higher than the mean score of control group, it does not show asignificant difference (73.93>70.33). Therefore, based on pair test, the result shows that the mean score of pre-test and post-test in experimental group are significantly different (55.41-73.93). Moreover, based on the students’ response on the questionnaire, it is found that the mean score is 80.15 which was categorized “interested”. The Pearson’s r for correlation shows that the correlation coefficient between students’ interest and students’ writing ability is 0.891, with the sig. (2 tailed) value is less than 0.05 indicates that there is a strong, significant and positive correlation between students’ interest and students’ writing ability. Specifically, the research result indicates that macromedia flash animation is interesting and effective to enhance students’ writing skill. Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out (1)the students’ perspective about the English Speech Training through the Muhadharah Program at IMMIM Putera Islamic Boarding School; (2) the most significant problems that challenge the students in undertaking English Speech Training through the Muhadharah Program; (3) the actions that the students already took  in attempt to deal with the problems they had in undertaking the English Speech Training through the Muhadharah Program.This research employed descriptive qualitative research design. It applied purposive sampling technique. The participants of this research were two students, they are grade 2: 1 student and grade 6: 1 student. The data were collected by using interview and observation. The interview was used to gather the data about the students’ perspectives on the English Speech Training through the Muhadharah Program at IMMIM Putera Islamic Boarding School, the challenges they faced and the solutions they took dealing with the English Speech Training through the Muhadharah Program. The result of research showed that (1) the perspectives of the students on the Muhadharah program in IMMIM Putera Islamic Boarding School are quite positive; (2) the most significant problems that challenge the students in undertaking the program are mostly related to the linguistic factors; peers’ generated anxiety; monotonous design of the program; and speech by rote; (3) the solutive action taken by the students to tackle the problems in undertaking the Muhadharah program; preparing the speech materials and speech techniques. This is done in two ways: consulting to supervising teachers (done by junior students); preparing everything independently (done by senior students). The implications of this research are; (1) promoting a term to address a new speaking feature called “Speech by Rote”; (2) pesantren should recruit supervising teachers with good English command; (3) pesantren should vary the design of the program.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know students’ vocabulary size; and to know whether there was significant difference of vocabulary size among the students of different levels of English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Makassar Muhammadiyah University in academic year 2017/2018. This study used quantitative descriptive and cross-sectional study as the design of the study. The sample of this study were the first, third, fifth, and seventh semester students. The instrument of this study is a vocabulary size test. It used one-way ANOVA to analyze the data of the test. The findings reveal that the highest mean score was the seventh semester students and the lowest mean score was the third semester students. And the most beyond expectation was the mean score of the first semester students which gone over the third and fifth semester students’ mean score. There is significant difference of the vocabulary size among the students of different levels. The result showed F-value (F0) 11.11 is greater than F-table (Ft) 2.60, (11.11 ≥ 2.60). Then the p value is 0.000 lower than 0.05 (0.000 ≤ 0.05). Hence, it can be concluded that H0is rejected and H1is accepted. Post Hoc Multiple Comparison showed that significant difference did not exist between some groups and only exist between two groups. Clearly, from the result, it can be said that there was significant difference of vocabulary size among the university students of different levels of English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University.Keywords: vocabulary, vocabulary size test

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to investigate whether VAK learning style as a technique has significant effects in improving students’ writing ability and the students’ interest in VAK learning style as a technique in studying English writing. This research employed quasi experimental design. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of Science Program SMA Negeri 1 Bontomarannu in academic year 2014/2015. This research used cluster random sampling. The sample consisted of 60 students that belonged to two groups: 30 students in the experimental andcontrol group. The data was collected by using writing test and questionnaire.The findings showed that there was an improvement on the students’ writing ability after the treatment. The students’ result of posttest of experimental group was more significantly improved than the students’ result of posttest of control group by the mean score 73.2 > 58.1. The difference of both scores was statistically significant based on the t-test value at significant level0.05 inwhich the P-value is lower than the significant level (0.0001 < 0.05). The mean score of the students’ interest in the experimental group was 91.63 and it was categorized as strongly interested. Key words: VAK Learning Style, Writing, Learning Style

Abstract

This article is another part of the research results conducted with the aim of developing a theory of learning English as a foreign language. The other part has been reported in the article entitled Information Technology Used by Good Language Learners in Millennial Era in Solid State Technology Volume 3 Issue 5.           Theory development is carried out by utilizing best practice as a data source. The research question is "What English learning strategies are used by high achievers in the millennial era?". The main questions are translated into 4 (four) questions based on 4 types of language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Research subjects were selected based on academic achievement. Subjects were students of the 4th semester of English Department with 20% of the best academic achievement. The selected subjects were 40 students from the English Education Study Program and the English Literature Study Program. They were called as good language learners in Universitas Negeri Makassar.           The instrument used to collect data was a list of open questions consisting of 12 questions. The list of questions was distributed from March to May 2020 via google form to the WhatsApp account number of the research subjects. The collected verbal data were analyzed by using coding.           The results of the study contain descriptions of the types of strategies used by research subjects in improving English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. This description also includes the length of time used to improve the four types of English skills.The result shows that, (1) the millennial good language learners’ use a number of language learning strategies to improve their four types of language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This information is beneficial for ELT teachers, learners, and further researchers for formulating post pandemic language pedagogy.
