Abstract

Acne is a skin disease that is common in teenagers. In Indonesia, acne occurs around 85-100% of cases. According to the records of the Indonesian cosmetic dermatology study group, it was shown that 60% of acne sufferers in 2006, 80% in 2007 and 90% in 2009. A face with acne is an image that is not ideal for a teenager and creates dissatisfaction, causing a feeling of lack of self-confidence. One way that can be used to overcome the problem of acne is by giving a celery mask (Apium graveolens L.). Masks are cosmetic preparations for facial skin care which have the benefit of curing acne and acne scars. Celery (Apium graveolens L.) has been shown in several studies to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity to prevent acne. This study aims to prove the effect of using a celery mask to reduce the number of acne lesions. The method chosen in this study was the Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design, by comparing the difference in reducing the number of acne lesions from the celery mask treatment with the paired T-test formula. The results obtained from giving celery masks to 10 young women aged 16-18 years with the classification of mild, moderate and severe acne for 2 weeks showed a significant decrease in the number of acne lesions (p = 0.00). So it can be concluded that giving celery masks can reduce the number of acne lesions in young women aged 16-18 years.

Abstract

Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M Smith or locally in Southeast Sulawesi known as Wualae fruit has activity as an immunomodulator by increasing phagocytosis activity. Prior studies have been conducted to observe the effect of E. elatior as an immunomodulator, thus further study is needed to observe the production of cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-6 which are responsible for the immune responses. Etlingera elatior fruit macerated with 96% ethanol for three days and produced a total of ±74.6 g concentrated extract. Experimental animals used were divided into four groups (n=4) and treated orally once a day for seven days as follows: group I (0.5% Na CMC); group II (Stimuno®); group III (E. elatior fruit extract dose of 300 mg/kg BW); and group IV (E. elatior fruit extract dose of 400 mg/kg BW). On the eight-day, animals were infected with Staphylococcus aureus intraperitoneally and left for an hour. Thereafter, blood was collected and assayed using ELISA Kit (Elabscience rat IL-1β and Elabscience rat IL-6). Results demonstrated that group IV increased levels of IL-1β and group III and IV increased level of IL-6 (p<0.05). Increased levels of IL-1β and IL-6 are associated with phagocytosis in the immune response. In conclusion, E. elatior fruit extract at doses of 300 and 400 mg/kg BW increases levels of IL-1β and IL-6.

Abstract

Diarylheptanoids compounds from the genus Etlingera have attracted widespread attention due to their various structural diversity and potential pharmacological effects. This is certainly an important part to continue to study, especially from Sulawesi endemic species, one of which is Etlingera calophrys. The fruit of E. calophrys is widely utilized in the Sulawesi community. The lack of information on the content of chemical compounds and their pharmacological activities, so the study is very important. Diarylheptanoid compounds were obtained by chromatography technique, molecular structure interpretation by spectroscopy technique while pharmacological activity was tested against radical scavenging as antioxidant and inhibition of protein denaturation as anti-inflammatory. Two diarylheptanoid compounds were successfully isolated from E. calophrys fruit namely 1-(3'-methoxy-4'- hydroxyphenyl)-7-phenyl- 3-heptanone and 1-(3'-methoxy-4'- hydroxyphenyl)-7-(4"-hydroxyphenyl)- 3-heptanone. Antioxidant properties showed very strong ability with IC50 values of 32.21 ± 0.42 and 21.64 ± 0.63 µg/mL, respectively, while anti-inflammatory properties were strongly shown by the compound with IC50 values of 25.71 ± 0.54 and 15.28 ± 0.66 µg/mL, respectively. The presence of diarylheptanoid content that has good pharmacological activity can support the used of E. calophrys as a nutraceutical source.
