Abstract

Robusta coffee is an important agricultural commodity in North Lombok Regency, Indonesia, contributing to rural livelihoods and regional economic development. However, the performance of the Robusta coffee agribusiness remains constrained by various external challenges while simultaneously presenting emerging opportunities. This study aims to identify and analyze the key challenges and opportunities affecting the development of Robusta coffee in North Lombok, and proposes strategies for expanding market for North Lombok Robusta coffee. The results show that the main challenges identified include fluctuating coffee prices, the low bargaining position of farmers and processors, inconsistent coffee bean quality, and limited access to subsidized fertilizers. Conversely, significant opportunities arise from increasing domestic and global demand for coffee, availability of government support programs, the potential for value-added coffee processing, and improved access to market and technical information. The findings indicate that opportunity-driven strategies, particularly those related to value addition, quality improvement, sustainable input management, and information utilization, can mitigate existing challenges and enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the Robusta coffee agribusiness in North Lombok. The study provides policy-relevant insights for stakeholders involved in regional coffee development, by outlining concrete intervention areas, such as productivity enhancement, quality improvement, institutional strengthening, and market access expansion, to support value chain upgrading and sustainable Robusta coffee development in North Lombok. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of regency-level analysis of Robusta coffee in North Lombok and reconceptualizes Robusta from a low-value commodity into high-value one through expanding markets with differentiated emerging specialty and sustainable products.

Abstract

It is appear that there is the limited understanding of how sustainable agricultural practices can be effectively linked to the production of quality foods that meet evolving market and consumer demands, as existing studies tend to address sustainability and food quality in isolation.  This paper highlights the importance practicing sustainable agriculture and meeting demand of quality foods for the good of whole society. This study applied a secondary data collection method to identify pathways for meeting the demand for quality foods through the practice of sustainable agriculture, using a qualitative descriptive analysis supported by thematic synthesis of policy documents, scientific literature, and sectoral reports.  The study found that Sustainable practices enhance soil fertility and structure, reduce chemical residues, and promote balanced nutrient cycling, which collectively improve the nutritional value and safety of food products. In addition, environmentally sound farming systems strengthen resilience to climate variability and reduce production risks, thereby supporting consistent food supply. From a socio-economic perspective, sustainable agriculture can increase farmers’ incomes through efficiency gains, reduced input costs, and access to premium markets for quality foods. The study highlighted that adopting sustainable agriculture is not only essential for environmental protection but also critical for ensuring the availability of high-quality foods that meet consumer expectations and support food security. Policy support, farmer capacity building, and market incentives are identified as key factors in accelerating the transition toward sustainable food systems. This study contributes by integrating sustainable agriculture practices with quality food demand through a systematic synthesis of secondary evidence, providing conceptual and policy-relevant insights to support the development of sustainable, quality-oriented food systems.

Abstract

Efficiency of Watermelon Marketing in Lape District Sumbawa Regency Abstract This study aims to identify marketing channels and analyze marketing margins, the farmer’s share, profit distribution, and marketing efficiency for watermelons in Lape District, Sumbawa Regency. Conducted in 2026 using a quantitative approach, the study involved 34 farmers selected via proportional random sampling and 13 marketing agents comprising 5 collectors, 3 inter-island traders, and 5 retailers selected using snowball sampling. Data consisted of both primary and secondary sources, with primary data gathered through direct interviews using questionnaires. The results reveal two marketing channels: Channel I, oriented toward the local market, and Channel II, oriented toward markets outside the region. Channel I exhibited a marketing margin of Rp2,140 and a farmer’s share of 60.40%, whereas Channel II showed a margin of Rp6,740 and a farmer’s share of 32.60%. The profit distribution ratio was 0.90 for Channel I and 0.38 for Channel II, indicating a more proportional profit distribution in Channel I. Based on indicators such as marketing margin, farmer’s share, and profit distribution ratio, Channel I is relatively more efficient in delivering direct economic benefits to farmers. However, Channel II remains operationally significant, as it absorbs larger harvest volumes, ensures purchase certainty, and expands market access for watermelons from Lape District to regions beyond the local area. Consequently, assessments of marketing efficiency must consider factors beyond just the share of the price received

Abstract

Determinants of Farmers' Decisions to Participate in the Rice Farming Insurance Program Abstract The Rice Farming Insurance Program (AUTP) is a risk management instrument developed by the Indonesian government to protect farmers from losses caused by floods, droughts, and plant pest and disease outbreaks. However, farmer participation in this program remains relatively low, while studies examining farmer participation, particularly in dryland agricultural areas, are still limited. This study aims to identify and classify the determinants influencing farmers’ decisions to participate in AUTP and to analyze the direction and consistency of these determinants based on previous research findings. The study employed a scoping review approach following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Literature was collected from several databases, including Google Scholar, Garuda, DOAJ, ProQuest, Springer, Frontiers, and ResearchGate, covering publications from 2016 to 2026. A total of 25 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and key themes across the selected studies. The synthesis revealed that the determinants of farmer participation in AUTP can be grouped into four main categories: socio-demographic factors, economic and agronomic factors, institutional and information access factors, and farmers’ perceptions and behavioral risk factors. The most consistently positive determinants were education level, access to information and socialization activities, the role of agricultural extension agents, farmer group membership, previous crop failure experience, and perceptions of the benefits and risks of AUTP. In contrast, complex claim procedures, perceptions of high insurance premiums, adverse selection, and moral hazard were identified as major barriers to participation. These findings indicate that increasing farmer participation requires strengthening agricultural insurance literacy, institutional support, and trust in the program. In addition, significant research gaps remain regarding dryland agricultural areas, warranting further investigation.
