Abstract

Tolerance is a prominent issue amid Indonesia's efforts to moderate everyday attitudes towards religion and statehood. Understanding it is continuously explored through the values of the Qur'an, Hadith, and local traditions existing in society. Mori Sama in Donggo, Mbawa, is a tradition with values of tolerance legitimized by the Qur'anic texts according to its indigenous leaders. This paper explores the Donggo Mbawa community's understanding of tolerance, examining how they interpret tolerance verses and their practical implementation. As a form of field research, this paper relies on observation and interviews as primary data sources. Applying Karl Manheim's analysis through the theory of meaning, the study concludes that the Mbawa community upholds the principle of mori sama, stemming from a common ancestry. With the introduction of Islam and other religions to Donggo, the Mbawa community began to separate based on their respective beliefs. Secondly, the understanding of Islamic religious figures in Donggo Mbawa and the community towards tolerance verses is manifested in mutual respect, appreciation, and acceptance of differences. For example, village events such as weddings, circumcisions, communal prayers, Hajj prayers, Kasaro ceremonies, and religious holidays. Thirdly, the meaning of tolerance verses in the understanding of Islamic religious figures and the Mbawa community is generally grounded in the ancestral principle of Mori Sama.

In the academic realm, this research seeks to contribute to discussions on the study of the Qur’an in its relation to social media. Using Ahmad Rafiq’s reception theory of the Qur’an and Gary R. Bunt’s theory of cyber Islamic environments, this qualitative research concludes the following points; first, the Quranic-related contents on TikTok comprise of several typologies, such as; quotes, interpretations, completing Quranic verses, tajwid, tahsin, qira’ah or recitations, lectures, news, stories, daily practices, murattal, rasm or manuscripts, the virtues of Quranic verses, memorization, guessing surahs, tips, and duets. Second, at the beginning of 2020, during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, there had been an increased use of TikTok among people from various circles, ranging from the general public, celebrities, businessmen, preachers and others. Some preachers had been using TikTok as one of the learning media for the millennial generation. Abstract

Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) has recently been in a global spotlight as it is considered to cause a new cluster of Covid-19 cases to occur. According to some news reported by various media, Tablighi Jamaat remained in their ignorance of the pandemic. This may partly result from the way of interpreting religious texts. This article aims to discuss the views of the Temboro Tablighi Jamaat, Magetan, East Java about Covid-19, the factors that shape their understanding, and their religious activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. This article shows that the followers of Tablighi Jamaat in Temboro, Magetan, East Java, view diseases from the point of view of sharia (exoteric path) and haqiqa (mystcal truth). From the point of view of haqiqa, they see the disease as something that naturally comes from Allah. Meanwhile, adopting the point of view of Sharia, they try to replicate the way the Prophet Muhammad when he dealt with illnesses, which is documented in the hadith about the plague (tha’un). This reflects two reception models, namely exegetical reception and functional reception. This understanding then changed the TJ followers’ way of conducting their activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Their implementing health protocols and setting reasonable restrictions on the activities they usually perform in normal conditions. Therefore, this article also denies the statements of media about the ignorance of TJ followers in Temboro as to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the tradition of fasting in the Qur'an at the al-Falah Kudus Islamic Boarding School. The tradition of memorizing the Qur'an cannot be separated from the practice of fasting as a form of leisure in memorizing the Qur'an. The leisure of fasting Dalā'il al-Qur'ān at the al-Falah Islamic Boarding School is carried out when the students have completed the memorization of 30 juz. In practice, this fast must be carried out with the permission of the kyai, even though the number of days is not determined. The findings presented show that the Quran has made students who memorize the Quran memorize it, not just memorize it. The Qur'an has also encouraged them to carry out other special worship activities outside of memorizing the Qur'an. This then allows the worship activity to develop from its original form. Fasting, which was originally carried out without having anything to do with the activity of memorizing the Qur'an, was then carried out within the framework of memorizing the Qur'an. Therefore, the goal to be achieved from the fast also develops. Thus, the fasting of Dalā'il al-Qur'an has made the tradition of memorizing the Qur'an influence the development of orientation and goals to be achieved through fasting.
