Abstract

Dala’il al-khayrat is a kind of fasting that has been practiced by santris, mostly, in Central and East Java. It requires the persons to fasting in range of one or three years continually. This paper departs from questions on how is this practice carried out, how does the transmission of knowledge come from and how does the foundation of the sacred text (such as hadith) lie behind the practice. By using historical method, the authors conclude that the practice of dala’il cannot be separated from the role of Shaykh Yasin who taught his students through the process of ijazah. In addition, we found that the transmission of knowledge on dala’il al-khayrat rooted from Shaykh Mahfud al-Turmusi, an Indonesian prominent scholar who taught at haramayn in the 20th Century.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic, which occurred in line with the massive transformation of digital media, was a significant moment that enabled diverse Islamic preachers to use media to advance their own interests. However, little has been discussed regarding the religious responses to the COVID-19 performed by Ahlus Sunnah community members or those who are not inclined to participate in radical activities. By analyzing two important Ahlus Sunnah figures, Gus Baha and Abdus Somad, this article focuses on the group’s COVID-19 views on social media, which represents their motives, perspectives, strategies, and theological views to encourage Muslims to have certain mindsets on the virus. Given that Abdul Somad Official account around $1400- 21,700 per month with 950 thousand subscribers and Gus Baha Official account around $5-75 with 500 thousand subscribers, this article investigates their religious/ theological perspectives on COVID-19 and the extent to which they represent religious moderate viewpoints as the solution of the COVID-19. It argues that their YouTube or Facebook channels have enabled the birth of religious moderate arguments on COVID-19 rooted in the Ahlus Sunnah movement. Unlike well-established scientific perspectives on Covid-19 that spread out through official government channels or television, Gus Baha and Abdus Somad’s viewpoints have been relatively independent from medical networks, but highly dependent on Ahlus Sunnah movements. With a high number of offline and online followers, it demonstrates the potential of their status as religious influencers on COVID-19 based on Ahlus Sunnah viewpoints in Indonesia.

Abstract

Nawawi al-Bantani as an archipelago scholar through the Tanqih al-Qaul has contributed to the study of hadith in the mid-nineteenth century AD. The intellectual tradition developed by Nawawi al-Bantani became the scientific traditions that developed in Haramayn (Mecca and Medina), and the traditions Islam in the archipelago, especially in Islamic boarding school on an ongoing basis. This study aims to determine the socio-historical intellectual traditions of Nawawi and fiqh al-hadith contained in the Tanqih al-Qaul. Departing from that, the historical research method is used in uncovering the object of research. The results of this study indicate that the Lubab al-Hadith by al-Suyuthi (d. 911) was first recited by Nawawi al-Bantani in the mid-nineteenth century AD, through the syarah compiled by Nawawi there were seven ideas in the context of understanding hadith (fiqh al-hadith), this refuses the notion that the study of the eyes has not been touched, Nawawi al-Bantani has made efforts in this regard. In addition, Nawawi as sayyid ulama’ al-hijaz and musnid, not only compiled hadith books and spread his thoughts in the field of hadith, which at that time was more oriented towards the dialectics of sufism and fiqih. Through Nawawi, the intellectual genealogy traditions called sanad continues to be continuous, especially for students and scholars in the archipelago after that and brings its own style to the tradition of learning hadith in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract:Waqf land (donated land) is a property for people’s welfare that has not been remarkably managed in Indonesia. Poor administration and regulation of the waqf system cause dysfunction of this Muslim's most extensive resource. The waqf studies usually focus on issues around the misuse of waqf land, the swapping of waqf land, or the strategy for managing productive waqf land. Research on the disorganization of the waqf land remains unnoticed by researchers. This study complements previous writings' shortcomings by examining the patterns of waqf land disorganization and its consequences for the Muslims, including the waqf's low productivity, the waqf land position as a disputed source, and the waqf land as a lost-risk Muslim property. This study is empirical waqf research with interviews as the primary data and documents from online news website sources as the secondary data. This study indicates that the disorganization of waqf land is not only due to the absence of an administrative system and a lack of institutional commitment to waqf management. It is also rooted in Muslims' cosmological structure, who believe that waqf is the doer's afterlife savings. This belief resulted in the neglect of the waqf administration process, which led to the dysfunction of the community's resources. This study suggests further research on the contemporary waqf with its variants and waqf's practice from the doers’ and the managers' perspective to more comprehensively portray the problem of waqf land disorganization. Keywords: resource dysfunction; disorganization; waqf land; nazhir.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as a multicultural nation, such as culture, ethnicity, religion or anything else. As a monotheistic religion, Islam does not necessarily accept the diversity of cultures it encounters in Indonesia. Regarding amulets for example, as objects of cultural heritage that are believed to have power, Islam underlines with a red thread. The reason is, with tiny objects that are very vulnerable to bring users in polytheism. In addressing this common thread, diverse views and attitudes of Muslims emerge. This article discusses the amulet contestation in an online society. From the search results, obtained several references in the form of the Prophet's hadith, atsar companions, and opinions of scholars related to this talisman. The first two references, present information on permissibility as well as a ban on the use of talismans. While the latter is more about explaining core vocabulary which is considered as the key to understanding this issue. In terms of contestation that occurs in online communities, there are four trends that can be used as a planner of their attitude; scientific data, the objectivity of assessment, insight about talismans, and how to express opinions. Each suggests there are mutual influences and self-existence. Then at the level of their understanding of the Islamic text that exists, those who are allergic to amulets only stop at the hadith that forbids it. They are reluctant to explore more information about other traditions or explanations than the traditions they hold as the other online communities do.Keywords: Contestation, Amulet, Online Society, and Understanding Of Religion.

Abstract

Here I try to uncover various foundation of time and space underlying the  nature of caliph ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz’s thought who formally commanded codifying hadith. I use Peter L. Berger theory of sociology of knowledge to get an understanding of how the process ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz that has lived in the luxuriousness dynastic of Umayyah capable to pay attention on hadith whereas formerly it was allowed running wild in the arms individual thalib hadith and didn’t get attention from any Umayyad caliphate.
