Abstract

Lonto Léok, a tradition from Manggarai, Indonesia, reflects a significant transformation in the context of unity and communal decisions. Originating from inter-tribal conflicts, this tradition has evolved into a symbol of family unity. In Lonto Léok, formal interaction mechanisms are led by a leader known as "Tu'a Golo," who serves as a facilitator and guides the deliberation process. There are three main stages in Lonto Léok: "caca" (unpack), "cica" (discuss), and "congko" (finalize), reflecting an intensive deliberation process to reach collective agreements. This research aims to elucidate the history, meaning, and mechanisms of Lonto Leok in Manggarai culture while highlighting issues that still need to be addressed. The author adopts a qualitative method based on literature review, interviews, and the author's direct experiences as data sources. The research findings reveal that the shift in the meaning of Lonto Léok from battle to family unity demonstrates cultural adaptability in the face of social change. Lonto Léok represents how the Manggarai community manages conflicts and achieves consensus through deliberation and agreement. Abstract

Man and nature are inseparable unity, both are organic unity that must be mutually maintained. Daisaku Ikeda asserted that the state of the world filled with the destruction of nature has diminished the interdependent relationship between humans and nature. The destruction of nature caused by human unconsciousness of nature preservation and hierarchical view which puts human beings as supreme beings among all that exists in nature is a significant warning that should re-awaken human beings of responsibility (guarding and nurturing) to nature. Pope Francis in Laudato Si' emphasizes the ecological repentance that should be imbued with ecological spirituality rooted in the faith of faith in Christ as proclaimed through  the Gospel. In this context, ecological conversion can be understood as the process of sharing all the fruits of human encounter with Christ with the surrounding environment. One result of this encounter should be manifested in relation to the universe, i.e. environmental justice.

Abstract

Since birth, humans have human rights that cannot be challenged by anyone. Even when a state is formed with such a system of power, it cannot take away human rights. The rights to life, liberty and property are rights that have been inherent in humans since birth. When humans form a country and use their freedom to elect a few people to be their leaders, these leaders automatically hold the people's mandate to create justice and social prosperity. However, citizens are also free to dismiss a government that acts arbitrarily, for example because it has committed corruption. Corruption is the same as taking away human rights, where funds used for the welfare of the people are taken by the authorities for their personal or group welfare. In this paper the author tries to help minimize social injustice, through the principles of authority and freedom put forward by John Locke and John Stuart Mill. The author will describe several cases of corruption committed by government officials and then help readers on how to take a stance on this corruption phenomenon based on the thoughts of John Locke and John Stuart Mill.

Abstract

John Dewey never publishes a special work on theory of democracy. Nevertheless, his concern with democracy is undoubted. What is his main thought of democracy? This article is a textual analysis of the idea of democracy spread on his various works. As an experimentalist, his thought on democracy is to respond social problems. He views that two fundamental problems of democracy in his era are a tendency of reducing the meaning of democracy and social movements using violence in the name of political democracy. Dewey does not only look for the solution of the problems of democracy, but also put democracy in living process. The idea of liberty, equality and fraternity, as the democratic trinity, is ethical ideal of humanity. As an ethical idea, it should inspire each person in developing society for a better life. For this reason, he underlines the important of actualizing democracy through education.

The main tasks of the university are implementing learning, research, and community service. In a multicultural and multireligious Asia, the actualization of these tasks requires a dialogue with cultures, religions, and the poor. This paper is focused on opportunities that can be explored to realise the task of the Catholic universities in Yogyakarta in developing dialogue and harmony in Yogyakarta. This task might need a new and effective model of dialogue for a better living together in harmony. By applying a method of documental study and interviews, this study is focused on the exploration of challenges encountered by the Catholic universities in Yogyakarta in developing a community transformative dialogue. There are three main points. First, a description of the meaning of the community transformative dialogue. Second, an exploration of cultural potentials in Yogyakarta for developing community transformative dialogue. Third, a proposal for developing community transformative dialogue. These are three important results of this study. This transformative dialogue is a contextual and cultural dialogue that could be effective and appropriate for the multicultural and multireligious societies. In Yogyakarta, unity and harmony (keselarasan) are the core of the community that is necessary for the development of dialogue towards the well-being of the society. Abstract

Philosophy learning is an integral part of the educational formation at the Faculty of Theology, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is integrated with theology and other sciences learning to shape the identity of the faculty and to contribute to the development of the community. The focus of this writing is to answer two questions: What are the basic considerations for choosing philosophy learning in this faculty? How can method choice be accounted for? By attending to the faculty’s history, the author finds that the basic considerations for choosing philosophy learning method at the faculty are the history faculty establishment and its academic vision. Historically, the existence of the faculty was related to the efforts of Semarang Archdiocese for priest preparation and local pastoral activist education. Philosophy learning is also related to the faculty’s academic vision that leads the students towards concrete involvement in building the church living in the context of pluralism in Indonesia. Inspired by Heidegger’s idea on phenomenological method, preferences to select existential analysis method for philosophy learning in the faculty contribute to the development of contextual theological reflection as well as to priest and pastoral worker preparation, by involving students in community life, dialogue, and living together in the society, based on the values from the local wisdom that are still relevant today.

The purpose of this research is to describe the Mangongkal Holi ceremony as an expression to affirm the identity of the Toba Batak people. The method employed to gather data for this study was through literature review. Three essential questions served as instruments in this research. First, what is the significance of the Mangongkal Holi ceremony? Second, how and when is this ceremony conducted? Third, what is the meaning behind this ceremony? The research findings reveal that despite the dispersion of Toba Batak people across different regions, after the passing of their relatives, they bring the ancestral bones to be unified at a place called the Monument. The process of collecting these bones at a monument is referred to as Mangongkal Holi.
