Abstract

ABSTRACT  Anshoffy Murtafi. S131208003. 2016. The Translation Analysis of Repetition Language Style In Novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. The Technicque And Quality (Translation Study Using Stylistics Approach). Supervisors: (1) Prof. Drs. M.R.Nababan, M.Ed, M.A., Ph.D. (2) Prof. Dr. Djatmika, M.A. Thesis. Postgraduated Program In Linguistics Majoring In Translation Studies. Sebelas Maret University. Surakarta.                A best-seller novel entitled "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini translated by M. Nugrahani Berliani comes up with an interesting language use. It can be seen from the content that consists of a great number of language styles, and one of them is repetition that becomes the characteristic of this novel writer. This research aimed to (1) describe and identify the types of repetition language style in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, (2) describe the translation techniques used in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, and (3) describe the value and impact of the technique used in this study in term of accuracy and acceptability.               This research used descriptive qualitative method and focused to a single case. The data which were in the form of repetition language style in this study were obtained from the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns and its translations. Further, the data in the form of informant were gathered from the raters who assessed the accuracy and acceptability of the translation. The selected sampling technique was purposive sampling (theoretical based-sampling).  The data then were collected using document analysis and focus group discussion.               The conclusion of this study is the implementation of 10 translation techniques had a positive impact to the accuraracy and acceptability of its translation. The techniques giving positive impact in its translation in term of the accuracy and acceptability are established equivalence, generalization, transposition, amplification, pure borrowing, variation and particularization. Meanwhile, the techniques giving negative impact towards its translation in term of accuracy and acceptability are reduction, modulation, and discursive creation.  Keywords: Translation of Language Style, Repetition, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Stylistics

Abstract

This research is aimed to: (1) identify the kinds of euphemism sexual organ and sexual activity in  Fifty Shades of Grey novel, (2) identify the translation techniques used by the translator in translating sexual organ and sexual activity with euphemism, (3) describe the impact  of translation technique which applied by the translator toward translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. Sources of data are Fifty Shades of Grey novel and also informans who assess the quality of the translation. Data were collected by using document analysis, questionnaires, and focus group discussion (FGD). Data were analyzed by using Spradley’s ethnography method.The result of this research shows that there are 10 kinds of euphemism in sexual organ and sexual activity in Fifty Shades of Grey novel . The most dominating euphemism sexual organ of this data is general for specific with the percentation as many as 47.14%, while in sexual activity, the most dominating euphemism is hyperbole with percentation 29.37%. In this research there are thirteen techniques which used by the translator to translate sexual organ and sexual activity with euphemism, the technique which dominates is established equivalent with the percentation 47.43%. For the translation quality, 117 data (59,7%) were accurately translated, 66 data (33,7%) were less accurately translated 13 data (6,6%)were not accurately translated and there were 112 data (57,1%) identified as acceptable translation,  74 data (37,8%) are less acceptable translation, and 10 data (5,1%) are not acceptable translation.The conclusion of this research shows that lots of euphemisms were found in Fifty Shades of Grey novel and some of translation techniques have negative impact towards the translation quality of Fifty Shades of Grey novel. This research only uses euphemism sexual organ and sexual activity in Fifty Shades of Grey novel. The other reference of euphemism can be used as the data for further research. Keywords: Euphemism, translation techniques, translation quality

Abstract

This research is conducted by analyzing taboo words in The Wolf of Wall Street movie and its two subtitle versions. The aims of this research are to describe: (1) form and classification of taboo words found in The Wolf of Wall Street movie, (2) the translation techniques used for translating taboo word in The Wolf of Wall Street movie and its two subtitle version, (3) the translation quality of taboo words translations in VCD and amateur subtitles of The Wolf of Wall Street movie, (4) the impact of translation techniques toward the quality of taboo words translations in VCD and amateur subtitles of The Wolf of Wall Street movie.The research method applied is descriptive qualitative. In addition to that, it is embedded case study. The sources of data consist of documents and informants selected with purposive sampling technique. The documents are The Wolf of Wall Street movie and its two subtitle versions. Informants are validator and three raters. The data are taboo words that have been validated by validator and the information about translation quality given by raters. The techniques of collecting data are document analysis, questionnaire, and focus group discussion. The data were analyzed by using ethnography method composed by Spradley (1980)The findings show that there are two kinds of grammatical unit of taboo words, they are word and phrase. Sexual references and offensive slang are the dominant categories found in this research. In VCD version, the translation techniques used are established equivalence, reduction, amplification, literal, borrowing and generalization. Established equivalence creates high level of accuracy and acceptability. Reduction affects the quality with low level of accuracy but can create acceptable translations. Meanwhile, in the amateur version, there are seven translation techniques used. They are established equivalence, reduction, amplification, borrowing, generalization, literal, and compensation. This research finds that established equivalence makes the taboo words translations accurate and acceptable. Reduction and the other techniques results in the low level of accuracy but high level of acceptability. Based on the findings, it can be drawn that the translation techniques applied affect the quality of taboo word translations in term of accuracy and acceptability. Keywords: taboo words, translation techniques, accuracy, acceptability
