Abstract

The present research aims to investigate the types and functions of interruptions of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton during the US presidential debates in 2016. Data collected from Donald Trump's and Hillary Clinton's speech in the debates were transcribed and analyzed to find types and functions of interruptions by both of the candidates. The results of the Conversational Analysis display that Donald Trump dominates the interruptions by applying a substantially greater number of interruptions consisting three different types of interruptions. Butting-in Interruptions were applied by both as the biggest number of interruptions. Data analysis also demonstrates that intrusive functions appear much more frequently compared to the collaborative functions of interruptions applied by the male and female presidential candidates. Discussion as to why such phenomena are noticeable in the data concludes the paper.

Abstract

This paper investigates women's language features and their functions in the speech by Dalia Mogahed, a Muslim woman, at TEDTalks based on Lakoff’s and Pearson's theories. The researchers deal with Dalia's utterances focusing on the women’s language functions in view of speaking ethics in Islam. This study aims (1) to analyze the functions of women’s language features, and (2) to examine their relationship with the Islamic speaking ethics used by Dalia Mogahed. The researchers use a qualitative approach in conducting this study. The findings demonstrate that Dalia applies some women's language features and functions. Her speech contains women’s language features, i.e. lexical hedges, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. They are used for the functions of starting a discussion, expressing feelings, and softening utterances in compliance with Islamic speaking ethics. Consistent with the speaker’s characteristics and constrained by the situational contexts, the speech by Delia is sublime, straightforward and uncomplicated, honest and truthful, effective, gentle, and polite. In conclusion, language use is constrained by various contexts including genders, communicative purposes, and personal characteristics.

Abstract

This article aims at describing urban millennials’ preferences in learning Islam in the digital era. Since such a research project collecting data from the field is still rarely found in Indonesia, we set off to carry out the present research to address the issue. Preliminary in nature, the current study, uncovers the digital natives’ preferences toward religious da‘wah—both online and offline. Data collated from students and teachers of Islamic courses at a university in Surabaya, East Java. A total 134 people were surveyed and three people were interviewed. The results of the analysis portray the shift in learning preferences compared to those of the older generation. The millennial students choose Islamic ethics, beliefs, and jurisprudence in preference to Sufism, Islamic politics, and civilization. In addition to learning on campus, they prefer watching YouTube than reading books and attending pengajian. They were also found to prefer popular usta>dhs on YouTube as their role models.

Abstract

Academic writing skills have become an essential aspect that Indonesian students must focus on,  especially for those who are planning or pursuing their postgraduate studies abroad. The current research is conducted to investigate the difficulties faced by Indonesian students who currently pursue or recently complete their postgraduate studies in seven countries with different majors. The subject was seven Indonesian students who studied in India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherland, and Poland. To collect the data, the researcher used the qualitative research method. Two questionnaires in the form of open-ended questions were distributed and fulfilled by all research participants. The findings indicate that Indonesian students who pursued postgraduate study abroad faced difficulties in academic writing practice, for instance, paraphrasing the sentence, assuring coherence, formulating cohesion, and expressing their voice. Besides, some of them also faced problems in choosing appropriate words and relevant topics in their writing. The main factors that appear to particularly contribute to the difficulties are less academic writing practice, lack of vocabulary, and unfamiliar with academic writing structure. Even though the students pursued different majors and countries, they have common difficulties in order to write academic writing. Moreover, cultural differences also influence students’ difficulties.

Abstract

In the digital age, technological advances impact EFL language instruction in Indonesia. After examining the current and future demands of education, prospective educators need to attain the minimum standards to fulfill students' needs in the twenty-first century. Multimodal texts in education are one way to solve today's pedagogical needs. The current study explores pre-service teachers' perceptions of their performance in utilizing multimodal texts in microteaching classes. Data were collected from the 6th-semester students from the English Language Education Study Program, the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. This research applied mixed methods, combining data collection from observation, questionnaires as primary sources, and a focus group discussion (FGD) to support the data. Then, the questionnaire data were analyzed quantitatively, and data from the FGD were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. The finding shows that the pre-service teachers applied five types of multimodal texts in microteaching classes. In addition, although most of them perceive positively toward the use of multimodal texts in their teaching practice, there are still challenges in implementing digital-based multimodal texts, such as limited access to digital applications and confusion in integrating digital applications into learning activities.

Abstract

Humor is essential in maintaining the balance of human life socially and psychologically. Each culture in the world, including Islamic culture, perceives humor differently. Furthermore, from an academic perspective, humor can be constructed using linguistic features. Therefore, this study aims to examine verbal humor construction using linguistics features and evaluate how verbal humor is perceived by different cultures, particularly popular British and Islamic cultures. British popular culture is directed more toward the liberal culture, which is often opposed to the Islamic culture, which is often seen as conservative. By employing a qualitative approach, the study investigates the verbal humor construction in Black Books comedy series using Gricean cooperative maxim theory and Marzolph's concept of Islamic perspectives on humor based on the Holy Qur’an and Hadith. The results of this study point out that verbal humor utterances in the series flout and violate all four Gricean maxims, which are the maxim of quality (54.3%), quantity (14.3%), relevance (11.4%), and manner (20%). This study also found that most verbal humor utterances in the series are appropriate to Islamic perspectives on humor, as 60% of the verbal humor utterances do not contain ridicule, defamation, offensive utterances and name-calling, and some other forbidden acts in Islam such as lies and abusive behaviors. The results of this study are expected to provide more insights into verbal humor construction and different cultures' perspectives on verbal humor.
