Abstract

Teacher development programs have been commonly done for teachers in formal language learning contexts, meanwhile in non-formal contexts, such as language courses, the teacher development program has not yet been widely known, despite the variety of benefits that teacher development programs give to teachers. Thus, this research analyzes the teacher development program in Kampung Inggris language courses through qualitative studies using interviews with nine teachers from four language courses. Results suggest that teacher development programs in the four language courses can be categorized into skill learning, sharing, and mentoring. Skill learning includes drilling, evaluation, and e-courses while sharing and mentoring involve peer-teacher sharing programs and consultation with CELTA-certified teachers The findings also indicated that teachers still need more teacher development programs that are not yet given by the language courses management. Thus, the study suggests further analysis of this issue and more opportunities for teachers in non-formal language learning programs to develop their teaching skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the daily life of a student navigating a multilingual language policy at Pesantren Progresif Bumi Sholawat, an Islamic boarding school in East Java. It aims to explore how the use of multiple languages, primarily English, supported by Japanese, Arabic, and Javanese, shapes the student’s communication, identity formation, and emotional adaptation. Utilizing a qualitative methodology with a narrative inquiry approach, the study draws on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, which emphasizes social interaction and cultural tools as the foundation of language acquisition. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic narrative analysis.  The findings show three key aspects, First, students experience both cognitive and emotional tension while adapting to the English-only policy. Second, support from peers and teachers serves as crucial scaffolding that helps them build confidence and overcame language anxiety. Third, students gradually form a hybrid identity that integrates Pesantren values with global communication competence This research contributes to the field of language policy by foregrounding student voices, affective experiences, and practical directions for enhancing multilingual practices in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Wordwall as a multimodal digital learning tool to enhance English vocabulary acquisition among third-semester PKPBI students from Tadris Mathematics and Qur’anic Interpretation majors at UIN Malang. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through classroom observations, student interviews, documentation of student tasks, and pre- and post-tests. The findings reveal that Wordwall significantly improved students' vocabulary mastery, as demonstrated by the notable increase in post-test scores across both classes. Three main strategies, Meaning-Matching Strategy (MMS), Contextual Understanding (CU), and Pronunciation and Spelling Accuracy (PSA), were effectively applied through various Wordwall features such as Matching Game, Type the Answer, Wordsearch, and Open the Box. Students reported positive perceptions regarding Wordwall’s effectiveness, motivational appeal, engagement, learning experience, and visual design. The game-based format created an enjoyable and interactive learning environment that supported retention and contextual vocabulary use. However, a few students expressed challenges related to visual complexity and internet dependency, reflecting the need to align digital tools with students’ cognitive load and accessibility. This research contributes uniquely by integrating real-time classroom observations with student reflections from two distinct academic backgrounds and emphasizing Wordwall's role in personalized, multimodal vocabulary learning. The study highlights that while Wordwall is effective, its design and implementation must be adaptable to diverse learner profiles and technological readiness.Keywordsvocabulary acquisition, multimodal learning, Wordwall, student perception, digital learning tools.

Abstract

The rising dominance of short-form video platforms like Instagram and TikTok in the digital marketing ecosystem has transformed how commercial messages are crafted, consumed, and acted upon. These social media platforms no longer function solely as communication spaces but also as visually-dynamic marketplaces where textual and multimodal elements play crucial roles in influencing consumer behavior. Within this context, examining the linguistic landscape (hereinafter, LL) of advertisements and their alignment with persuasive marketing principles becomes crucial to understanding how digital advertising drives user engagement and purchasing behavior. This study aims to investigate how Attention, Interest, Desire, Action (henceforth AIDA) marketing principles are represented in the LLs of TikTok and Instagram ads. Specifically, this research examines the integration of visual-textual elements and persuasive techniques in selected advertisements through the combined lens of LL analysis and the AIDA model. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, this study analyzed fifty advertisements (25 from Instagram and 25 from TikTok) selected using the purposive sampling method based on four criteria. The analytical framework comprised two components: (1) an LL analysis to categorize language choice, typography, and multimodal integration elements, and (2) an AIDA-based coding scheme to evaluate how each ad captures attention, sustains interest, evokes desire, and prompts consumer action. Data were manually coded and thematically interpreted. The findings reveal that advertising on both Instagram and TikTok exhibits a linguistically rich landscape, with bilingual content (Indonesian–English) being most prevalent, and a smaller yet significant presence of multilingual advertisements (Indonesian–English–Thai), especially on TikTok. Moreover, AIDA principles were consistently observable in both platforms, effectively covering the stages from attention to action. However, Instagram advertisements are generally more straightforward and geared toward long-term engagement, while TikTok ads adopt a more narrative-driven approach with a focus on short-term impact. TikTok ads tended to be more emotionally-evocative and action-oriented, while Instagram ads emphasized polished branding and aesthetic appeal. By combining LL analysis and AIDA principles, this study bridges linguistic and marketing perspectives on digital advertisements. The findings contribute to understanding how digital consumer spaces function as hybrid LLs and offer insights for content creators, marketers, and scholars seeking to design impactful, culturally resonant advertisements on short-form video platforms. The study emphasizes the need for advertisers to align linguistic strategies with persuasive structures to maximize reach and conversion in the competitive realm of social commerce.

Abstract

Bibliometric analysis of vocabulary in EFL is limited. This limitation is due to the topic's specificity. Updated bibliographic data on vocabulary in EFL is essential to support future research on the topic, specifically in the context of EFL. This study addressed this gap by conducting a bibliometric analysis of 117 research or review articles sourced from the Scopus database. The data were retrieved using the PRISMA data collection scheme, which was later processed and visualized using Biblioshiny-R and VOSViewer. The analysis focused on trends in annual production (2014-2024), key authors, frequently used keywords, and highly cited documents. The results showed that the annual scientific production from 2014-2024 experienced notable fluctuations, with 2014 being the most productive year (31 documents) and 2017 the least (2 documents). The authorship analysis revealed a relatively small group of recurring contributors, such as Qun Wu, Hifen Lin, and Mark Feng Teng, indicating that although productivity per author was modest, these researchers collectively shaped the direction of EFL vocabulary scholarship. Keyword co-occurrence analysis highlighted “vocabulary,” “vocabulary learning,” and “EFL” as the most dominant terms, showing that research in this field focuses strongly on lexical development within foreign-language contexts. Citation analysis showed that Blasco (2015), Klimova (2021), and Sidek (2015) produced the most influential records centered on cognitive linguistics, mobile learning, and vocabulary relationships. This study updates and systematizes the fragmented landscape of EFL vocabulary research, revealing a clear shift toward technology-mediated, corpus-informed, and cognitively oriented approaches. The findings offer a renewed foundation for future researchers to further develop and expand this field. Keywords: bibliometric analysis, EFL, vocabulary.

Abstract

In the digital age, technological advances impact EFL language instruction in Indonesia. After examining the current and future demands of education, prospective educators need to attain the minimum standards to fulfill students' needs in the twenty-first century. Multimodal texts in education are one way to solve today's pedagogical needs. The current study explores pre-service teachers' perceptions of their performance in utilizing multimodal texts in microteaching classes. Data were collected from the 6th-semester students from the English Language Education Study Program, the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. This research applied mixed methods, combining data collection from observation, questionnaires as primary sources, and a focus group discussion (FGD) to support the data. Then, the questionnaire data were analyzed quantitatively, and data from the FGD were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. The finding shows that the pre-service teachers applied five types of multimodal texts in microteaching classes. In addition, although most of them perceive positively toward the use of multimodal texts in their teaching practice, there are still challenges in implementing digital-based multimodal texts, such as limited access to digital applications and confusion in integrating digital applications into learning activities.

Abstract

This study reports on an internal evaluation of an in service training in Indonesia called English Language Training for Islamic Schools (ELTIS). The data obtained from questionnaires were cross-referenced through document reviews and focus group discussions. A total of 187 Islamic junior high school teachers responded to the questionnaire. The questionnaire asked about any improvements they expe- rienced, the support from their schools to apply the new knowledge and skills, and the relevance of the training to their needs. The results showed that the English abili- ty and the teaching skills of the teachers had improved. Support from the schools was found to be very high, although parental support was not as high as expected. ELTIS materials were generally found to meet needs of madrasahs, but were not re- ally appropriate for the Islamic context. Interestingly, the teachers stated that the ma- terials would be used in their schools after the closure of ELTIS.

Abstract

The present research aims to investigate the types and functions of interruptions of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton during the US presidential debates in 2016. Data collected from Donald Trump's and Hillary Clinton's speech in the debates were transcribed and analyzed to find types and functions of interruptions by both of the candidates. The results of the Conversational Analysis display that Donald Trump dominates the interruptions by applying a substantially greater number of interruptions consisting three different types of interruptions. Butting-in Interruptions were applied by both as the biggest number of interruptions. Data analysis also demonstrates that intrusive functions appear much more frequently compared to the collaborative functions of interruptions applied by the male and female presidential candidates. Discussion as to why such phenomena are noticeable in the data concludes the paper.
