Abstract

Lipa’ sabbe (Bugis silk sarong) is a textile that has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Indonesia since 2016. The balo lobang motif visually has a very close connection with the sulapa’ eppa (four sides) philosophy, which represents cosmological balance in the Bugis worldview. This research aims to uncover the symbolic meaning of sulapa’ eppa in the balo lobang motif on Bugis lipa’ sabbe. This type of research uses an interpretative qualitative research method, which seeks to find meaning in a phenomenon to investigate issues related to specific individuals, thereby gaining direct insight into their activities. The results of this study found interpretations related to the perspectives of representamen, object, and interpretation. This research outlines that the semiotic approach is crucial for understanding cultural artifacts as tools for generating meaning. According to the findings of this research, symbolic meanings must be revived in cultural practices. In this process, the symbolic values contained in the motifs tend to be simplified or even lose their relevance in social practice.   Keywords: Semiotics, Meaning, Lipa’ Sabbe, Balo Lobang, Sulapa’ Eppa

Abstract

This study aims to map the distribution of Kacaping as a traditional musical instrument of the Bugis people in Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap) Regency and analyze the socio-cultural relationships that support the sustainability of this musical practice from a socio-musicological perspective. The study uses a qualitative approach with a musical ethnography design. Data were obtained through field observations, in-depth interviews with cultural experts, Kacaping players, and community leaders, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results of the study indicate that Kacaping activities in Sidrap Regency are not evenly distributed, but are concentrated in Tellu Limpoe District, especially Amparita Village, which is currently the center of Kacaping preservation and development. Socio-culturally, Kacaping functions as a symbol of Bugis cultural identity, a medium for transmitting cultural values, and a means of building social relations in the community. The study also found that each player has a different improvisational pattern that forms a personal identity in musical practice. These differences in improvisation indicate that Kacaping is a dynamic cultural practice and continues to undergo a process of cultural construction. Furthermore, Kacaping serves as a cultural arena that brings together performers, cultural figures, craftspeople, and the community in the process of producing meaning, legitimizing culture, and reproducing local knowledge. This finding expands sociomusicological studies by positioning Kacaping not only as a traditional musical instrument, but also as a sociocultural practice that shapes the identity, social relations, and cultural sustainability of the Bugis Sidrap community

Abstract

This study analyzes manca' paddang, a traditional Selayar martial performance using swords, as a performative semiotic practice in which the body, object, and humor operate as cultural signs. Although the performance remains visible in ritual and community stages, it is often reduced to entertainment, thereby obscuring its role in transmitting values of courage, siri', social intimacy, and cultural memory. Using an interpretive qualitative design, data were collected over approximately three months in Galung Bontosikuyu, Benteng Bontoharu, Kayuadi, and Pulau Madu through passive observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation of performances. Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic model of representamen, object, and interpretant was used as the main analytical framework, complemented by performance studies perspectives on embodied action and cultural transmission. The findings show that the performer's body functions as a representamen through patterned movement, gesture, posture, and facial expression. The paddang or sword operates as an object that indexes courage, self-control, and disciplined masculinity while structuring dramatic interaction. Humor emerges as a dynamic interpretant through playful improvisation, laughter, and audience participation, transforming potential violence into social intimacy. The study argues that manca' paddang is not merely a traditional martial attraction but a complex cultural sign system in which Selayar identity is enacted, negotiated, and reproduced. It contributes to scholarship on Indonesian performance by integrating Peircean semiotics with performative analysis of embodied local knowledge.
