Abstract

Students, being academically active, may experience reduced physical activity, risking lower extremity strength, particularly in the gastrocnemius muscle. Calf raise exercises can improve this muscle's power. This study aimed to examine the relationship between calf raise frequency and gastrocnemius strength in anesthesia nursing students at Universitas 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta. Using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, 41 students were assessed via total sampling. Muscle strength was measured using a leg dynamometer and observation sheet. Wilcoxon and Spearman Rank tests revealed significant improvement (p = 0.000) and a strong relationship between exercise frequency and muscle strength. Most participants (76.2%) reported high exercise frequency and moderate strength improvement. The findings confirm a significant relationship between calf raise frequency and gastrocnemius strength, suggesting the need for increased student awareness of muscle training.

Abstract

General anesthesia is a procedure that eliminates consciousness and pain during surgery. Common devices used to secure the patient’s airway during surgery include the endotracheal tube (ETT) and the laryngeal mask airway (LMA). However, these devices can cause side effects, one of which is postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). PONV is a physiological reaction that frequently occurs within the first 24 hours after surgery. This study aims to compare the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing general anesthesia using endotracheal tubes and laryngeal mask airways at RSUD Wates. This study employed quantitative approach with descriptive comparative design. The sample consisted of 40 postoperative patients at RSUD Wates who received either ETT or LMA. The statistical test used was the Mann-Whitney test. The Mann-Whitney test revealed a significant difference in the incidence of PONV between ETT and LMA use, with a p-value of 0.008 (p < 0.05). In the ETT group, 10 respondents (50%) experienced nausea, and 5 respondents (25%) experienced retching or vomiting. In the LMA group, 6 respondents (30%) experienced nausea and 1 respondent (5%) experienced retching or vomiting. There is a significant difference in the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting between the use of endotracheal tubes and laryngeal mask airways in patients undergoing general anesthesia.

Abstract

Spinal anesthesia is commonly used in surgical procedures but often leads to hypotension due to sympathetic blockade, which can seriously affect the patient's hemodynamic stability. To prevent this, the administration of lactated Ringer crystalloid fluid using preloading (before anesthesia) and coloading (during anesthesia) methods is widely implemented. This study aimed to compare the effects of preloading and coloading on blood pressure stability in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia at Roemani Muhammadiyah Semarang Hospital. A quantitative research method with a comparative observational design and cross-sectional approach was used, involving 40 patients divided equally into preloading and coloading groups. Blood pressure was measured before and after fluid administration, and data were analyzed using paired t-test and independent t-test. Results showed significant changes in blood pressure in both groups (p=0.000; p<0.05). Furthermore, the independent t-test indicated a significant difference between the two methods (p=0.019; p<0.05), with preloading proving more effective in maintaining blood pressure stability than coloading. In conclusion, there is a significant comparison between preloading and coloading of lactated Ringer crystalloid fluid on blood pressure in spinal anesthesia patients, with preloading showing a superior stabilizing effect on blood pressure.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between intraoperative blood loss and the incidence of hypothermia in patients undergoing general anesthesia at PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Hospital. General anesthesia, while commonly used for its effectiveness and patient comfort, is associated with various physiological changes, including postoperative hypothermia. Hypothermia can lead to serious complications such as delayed recovery, increased bleeding, infection risk, and impaired wound healing. One contributing factor is blood loss during surgery, which reduces the body’s ability to regulate temperature. This research employed an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional approach involving surgical patients who received general anesthesia. Data were collected on the volume of intraoperative bleeding and the presence of hypothermia in the recovery phase. The findings indicate a significant correlation between the amount of blood lost during surgery and the occurrence of hypothermia. These results suggest that early identification and management of blood loss are essential to prevent hypothermia and its associated risks. The study emphasizes the importance of temperature monitoring and bleeding control in improving patient safety and outcomes during surgical procedures involving general anesthesia

Abstract

Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) is a common complication following surgery, including procedures involving spinal anesthesia, which can increase patient discomfort and length of hospital stay. Ondansetron is effective in preventing PONV, but its effectiveness may depend on the timing of administration. This study aimed to compare the incidence of PONV in patients who received ondansetron before and after spinal anesthesia at RSUD Wates. A comparative quantitative method was used with 40 respondents. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test, which showed a significant result of 0.003 (p < 0.05). In the group receiving ondansetron before spinal anesthesia, 5 respondents (25%) experienced mild nausea and 15 respondents (75%) reported no nausea or vomiting. In contrast, in the group receiving ondansetron after spinal anesthesia, 7 respondents (35%) reported no symptoms, 6 respondents (30%) experienced nausea only, and 7 respondents (35%) experienced vomiting or retching. It can be concluded that administering ondansetron before spinal anesthesia is more effective in preventing PONV.
