Abstract

Abstract

General anesthesia is a procedure that eliminates consciousness and pain during surgery. Common devices used to secure the patient’s airway during surgery include the endotracheal tube (ETT) and the laryngeal mask airway (LMA). However, these devices can cause side effects, one of which is postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). PONV is a physiological reaction that frequently occurs within the first 24 hours after surgery. This study aims to compare the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing general anesthesia using endotracheal tubes and laryngeal mask airways at RSUD Wates. This study employed quantitative approach with descriptive comparative design. The sample consisted of 40 postoperative patients at RSUD Wates who received either ETT or LMA. The statistical test used was the Mann-Whitney test. The Mann-Whitney test revealed a significant difference in the incidence of PONV between ETT and LMA use, with a p-value of 0.008 (p < 0.05). In the ETT group, 10 respondents (50%) experienced nausea, and 5 respondents (25%) experienced retching or vomiting. In the LMA group, 6 respondents (30%) experienced nausea and 1 respondent (5%) experienced retching or vomiting. There is a significant difference in the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting between the use of endotracheal tubes and laryngeal mask airways in patients undergoing general anesthesia.

Abstract

Spinal anesthesia is commonly used in surgical procedures but often leads to hypotension due to sympathetic blockade, which can seriously affect the patient's hemodynamic stability. To prevent this, the administration of lactated Ringer crystalloid fluid using preloading (before anesthesia) and coloading (during anesthesia) methods is widely implemented. This study aimed to compare the effects of preloading and coloading on blood pressure stability in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia at Roemani Muhammadiyah Semarang Hospital. A quantitative research method with a comparative observational design and cross-sectional approach was used, involving 40 patients divided equally into preloading and coloading groups. Blood pressure was measured before and after fluid administration, and data were analyzed using paired t-test and independent t-test. Results showed significant changes in blood pressure in both groups (p=0.000; p<0.05). Furthermore, the independent t-test indicated a significant difference between the two methods (p=0.019; p<0.05), with preloading proving more effective in maintaining blood pressure stability than coloading. In conclusion, there is a significant comparison between preloading and coloading of lactated Ringer crystalloid fluid on blood pressure in spinal anesthesia patients, with preloading showing a superior stabilizing effect on blood pressure.

Abstract

Background: Final-year students in health sciences education face complex academic demands, including the completion of final projects, clinical practice, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and competency examinations. These responsibilities often contribute to academic stress, particularly among Anesthesiology Nursing students who carry substantial clinical responsibilities and are directly involved in anesthesia procedures in operating rooms. If not properly managed, academic stress may develop into burnout, a condition characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced academic effectiveness resulting from chronic stress. Methods: This study employed a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 60 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: The findings revealed that the majority of final-year Anesthesiology Nursing students experienced a moderate level of academic stress (51 students; 85%), while 6 students (10%) experienced high academic stress. Regarding burnout, most respondents were categorized as having moderate burnout (22 students; 36.7%), followed by low burnout (19 students; 31.7%), very low burnout (18 students; 30.0%), and high burnout (1 student; 1.7%). Statistical analysis showed a significant positive correlation between academic stress and burnout (p = 0.000), with a moderate correlation coefficient (r = 0.484). Conclusion: There is a significant positive relationship between academic stress levels and burnout among final-year anesthesiology students. The strength of the relationship was moderate, indicating that higher levels of academic stress were associated with higher levels of burnout.

Abstract

Background: Patients with diabetes mellitus who undergo surgery under general anesthesia of hemodynamic instability, particularly intraoperative blood pressure changes, preoperative fasting blood sugar levels are a metabolic indicator that has the potential to affect blood pressure stability during general anesthesia, but the scientific evidence examining the relationship between the two variable is limited. Methods: This study used a correlational quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample amounted to 30 patients with diabetes mellitus who underwent surgery under general anesthesia, selected using consecutive sampling techniques. Data analysis was carried out using the Spearmen Rho correlation test. Results: Most of the respondents were female (56.7%), aged 36–50 years (60%), and had ASA II physical status (73.3%). The highest fasting blood sugar levels were in the normal category (11 patients), followed by prediabetes and hyperglycemia. Intraoperative blood pressure was predominantly in the normal category (17 patients). There was a significant relationship between fasting blood sugar levels and intraoperative blood pressure, with a value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of 0.639 (strong relationship, positive), all patients with hyperglycemia had intraoperative hypertension (100%). Conclusion: The higher the fasting blood sugar level, the greater the tendency to increase intraoperative blood pressure in general anesthesia patients with diabetes mellitus at PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Hospital.
