Abstract

Background:Both high- and low-income countries face challenges related to inadequate breastfeeding practices, which are influenced by maternal self-efficacy in nursing. Breastfeeding counseling has been identified as a potential intervention to address this issue. Objectives:This study aimed to enhance maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy through counseling interventions to promote early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding practices. Method:This study employed a one-group pre-test and post-test research design. The sample comprised third-trimester pregnant women selected using purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria were as follows: gestational age of at least 34 weeks, primigravida status, singleton pregnancy, absence of breast abnormalities, and non-smoking or non-alcohol-consuming mothers. Mothers and/or infants requiring special care were excluded. Data collection was conducted using the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSE-SF) questionnaire. Statistical analysis included paired t-tests for normally distributed data and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests for non-normally distributed data, with a significance threshold set at p-value < 0.05. Result: The findings indicated a significant increase in maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy following the counseling intervention. Conclusion:Higher levels of breastfeeding self-efficacy were associated with increased maternal confidence in initiating and maintaining early and exclusive breastfeeding. This confidence helped mothers overcome various challenges encountered during the breastfeeding process.  Keywords:breastfeeding; counseling; self-efficacy; maternal health; Indonesia

Abstract

Stunting is a growth and development disorder in children caused by a lack of nutritional intake in the first 1000 days of life (HPK). It is a national issue requiring special attention from the government because stunting can hinder human resource potential and is linked to the health level of an area. Therefore, preventing stunting becomes a shared responsibility, with Posyandu cadres, as community representatives, playing an important role in implementing effective interventions to reduce stunting rates. This activity aims to broaden the insight of Posyandu cadres. Through this effort, it is hoped that Posyandu services will improve, leading to a reduction in stunting rates. The activity utilized the lecture and question-and-answer method. As a result, the average knowledge of Posyandu cadres increased from 42% to 100%.

Abstract

A prevalent experience among pregnant women is discomfort. Acupressure, a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), seeks to harmonize the body's energy flow through meridian points postulated to be interconnected with internal organs. This community outreach initiative sought to augment the capabilities of pregnant women and caregivers of infants/toddlers in self-acupressure and neonatal/infant acupressure within Lantojaya Village, Poso Pesisir District, Poso Regency. The methodology encompassed lectures, interactive question-and-answer sessions, discussions, and practical demonstrations. The outcomes revealed a discernible shift in participants' knowledge concerning acupressure principles and their proficiency in applying acupressure to specific part of body.

Abstract

Introduction: The maternal mortality rate in Indonesia remained high at approximately 7,389 deaths in 2021, attributed to several factors. One significant factor was prolonged labor caused by uterine contraction abnormalities due to disrupted oxytocin hormone secretion resulting from increased stress responses, thereby highlighting the importance of the presence of a birth companion. Objective: This research aimed to know the influence of birth companions on labor duration. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted within the working area of the Public Health Center in Palu City, Central Sulawesi, from January to June 2024. The sample comprised 50 postpartum mothers. Data were collected using observation sheets, processed using SPSS, and analyzed with the Chi-square test. Results: The results indicated no significant relationship between the mother's choice of birth companion and the duration of labor, with a p-value > 0.05 (p-value = 0.642). However, 60% of mothers in labor chose their husband as their birth companion. Conclusion: There was no significant relationship found in this study's variables due to the limited knowledge possessed by birth attendants, which resulted in suboptimal task performance. It is recommended that future researchers conduct studies focusing on improving the knowledge of birth attendants or exploring other variables that influence labor progress.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the health issues. Prevention efforts for stunting include interventions targeted at various life stages, such as adolescence and preconception. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of stunting prevention cards in enhancing the knowledge of adolescent girls to prevent stunting. Method: This study employed a Pre-Experimental Design with a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design, involving a sample size of 50 respondents. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire consisting of 10 items, each with 4 multiple-choice answer categories, with a maximum score of 100 and a minimum score of 10. The questionnaire was distributed to all respondents before the game, and the time for questionnaire completion was 20–25 minutes (pre-test). Subsequently, respondents were given 10 minutes to read the explanations of categories found on the stunting prevention cards. Afterward, a game lasting 1 hour was conducted, followed by a question and answer session lasting 25–30 minutes. Finally, respondents were given a 30-minute break before being provided with the same questionnaire again, with a questionnaire completion time of 25–30 minutes (post-test). Data were processed and analyzed univariately and bivariate using the T-test. The research results were then presented in tables and narrative form. Result: The statistical test yielded a p-value of 0.000 or p < 0.05. This indicates that the stunting prevention cards significantly influenced the increase in the knowledge level of adolescent girls. Conclusion: The higher the level of knowledge among adolescents, the better they are at preventing stunting.

Abstract

This study evaluates anemia prevention and control measures among adolescent girls in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, where anemia remains a pressing public health issue. Conducted from March to June 2024 in junior and senior high schools in Donggala and Poso, the cross-sectional study surveyed 384 girls using a structured questionnaire. Ethical approval was granted, and informed consent was obtained from participants. The study revealed a prevalence of anemia at 54.71%, with 79.43% of affected girls reporting iron supplement intake. Significant factors associated with anemia included daily consumption of fortified wheat flour (p = 0.010, PR 1.75), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) (p = 0.011, PR 1.74), and negative attitudes toward anemia prevention (p = 0.043, PR 1.54). Despite the high percentage of girls taking iron supplements, anemia remains prevalent, indicating gaps in current prevention efforts. The findings highlight the need for enhanced food fortification, better nutritional monitoring, and educational initiatives to shift attitudes and behaviors. Future research should investigate the long-term effectiveness of these interventions to improve public health outcomes.

Abstract

The healthy life expectancy at birth in Indonesia was recorded at 3.8. This figure was influenced by the care provided during pregnancy, childbirth, and the neonatal period. The aim of this community service was to deliver optimal midwifery care to infants to enhance sleep quality, alleviate fussiness, boost appetite, and promote weight gain, ultimately improving the overall health status of the infants. The community service activity took place on Friday, November 10, 2023, in Lantojaya village, targeting infants aged 0 to 23 months. The procedures implemented included assessment, planning, action, and evaluation. Among the 12 infants who received baby massage, behavioral changes were observed before and after the intervention: full-body movements increased from 66.7% to 100%; visual attention improved in 91.7% of the infants; non-nutritive sucking rose by 25%; object-holding activity reached 100%; and self-touching behavior was noted in 91.7% of the infants. The conclusion drawn from this community service was that baby massage had a relaxing effect on infants. Therefore, it is recommended that families regularly perform baby massage, either independently or with assistance from healthcare professionals.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a common nutritional problem encountered among adolescents. Approximately 30% of the world's population, especially in developing countries, suffers from anemia. Adolescent girls are prone to iron deficiency anemia because they experience menstruation periodically, requiring additional iron to compensate for the blood loss during menstruation. Iron is needed for the production of hemoglobin in the body. The status of anemia can be determined through changes in hemoglobin levels. One effort to prevent anemia is by consuming Iron Supplement Tablets (IST). The purpose of this activity is to assess the level of knowledge among adolescent girls regarding anemia as an effort to prevent stunting. This activity involves not only lectures and question-and-answer sessions but also health education utilizing attractive promotional media such as posters related to anemia. The results of health education show that there is an increase in the level of knowledge among adolescent girls regarding anemia as an effort to prevent stunting before and after health education, from 66% to 100%. One tangible form of increased knowledge among adolescent girls is the routine consumption of iron supplement tablets (IST), one tablet per day during menstruation and one tablet per week when not menstruating.
