Abstract

Elementary school students need proportional reasoning inside or outside the classroom. However, students still have difficulties in using proportional reasoning. The worked example strategy has been empirically proven to facilitate students' proportional reasoning. The study aimed to analyze the effect of the implementation of the worked example strategy on students' proportional reasoning. The research method used mixed methods with a sequential explanatory design. The research was conducted in one of the elementary schools in Krembung, East Java, Indonesia. The sample technique used was random and purposive sampling. The instruments used include proportional reasoning tests and interview guidelines. Data analysis used paired-sample t-test and thematic analysis. The results showed that there was a significant influence on proportional reasoning in the implementation of the worked example strategy. The success of proportional reasoning can be seen in the aspects of changes in two quantities and proportions. The results of this study have implications for mathematics learning. Teachers can apply the worked example strategy so that students are accustomed to imitating problem-solving steps, which can then be developed into more complex solutions to solve other problems.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning (MR) in problem-solving is still relatively low, but students need it. Previous studies have shown that problem-based learning (PBL) can improve MR. Meanwhile, differences in MR are also influenced by gender. This study assesses MR quantitatively and qualitatively by reviewing gender differences when given PBL intervention. The research participants involved were fifth-grade primary students. The sampling techniques used were convenience and purposive sampling. This study design uses an explanatory sequential mixed method with quantitative data collection followed by qualitative data. Instruments like MR tests, interview guides, and questionnaires were used to collect data. Analysis techniques used for quantitative data are descriptive statistics, n-gain, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test, while qualitative data is thematic analysis. The study found that quantitatively, PBL significantly affects the MR of students with different gender perspectives. Meanwhile, qualitative findings in MR varied among students of different genders (masculine, feminine, and neutral) in the implication of PBL. Another finding is that students’ MR is inadequate in generalizing the statement. The study results provide comprehensive findings regarding the differences in MR of students with gender differences in the implications of PBL, which can contribute practical, theoretical, or methodological to teachers, practitioners, researchers, and scholarship.

Abstract

Elementary school students' difficulties in solving literacy problems are caused by students' lack of understanding of mathematical concepts. Using a specific regional context in literacy problems is essential to analyze layers of understanding elementary school more deeply. Based on Pirie-Kieren's theory, the study aims to analyze layers of understanding elementary school students in solving literacy problems in the context of Sidoarjo. The theory consists of eight understanding layers: primitive knowing, image making, image having, property noticing, formalising, observing, structuring, and inventing. A qualitative approach with a case study type was used as the research method. The research participants were 26 fifth-grade elementary school students. The determination of the research subjects was done by purposive technique. In this, the emphasis of determining the subject is taken on three categories of understanding by having one student each in the low, medium, and high categories. The results show that the layers of understanding of elementary school students are at the highest, namely observing. In addition, literacy problems in Sidoarjo contexts can overstimulate students' understanding. The context of learning should be used in Sidoarjo. Future research recommendations suggested using the regional context as a background for literacy problems in learning or problem-solving; this is needed to explore and develop layers of understanding to a higher level.

Abstract

Logical reasoning for primary school students is still relatively low. Meanwhile, primary school students need logical reasoning to solve problems based on reasonable facts. Realistic mathematics education (RME) model is thought to improve students' logical reasoning. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of RME model on logical reasoning of primary school students. A quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest was applied as the research design. Meanwhile, the research sample was taken in one of the public primary schools in Sidoarjo, which was randomly selected. Data analysis techniques used descriptive and inferential. The results showed a difference in the average pretest and posttest scores on logical reasoning. Meanwhile, the paired t-test result of 0.000 <0.05 provides evidence that there is indeed a substantial relationship between the application of the RME model and the improvement of logical reasoning skills of primary school students. Thus, the RME model significantly affects the logical reasoning of primary school students.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the stages of students' analogical reasoning in solving indirect problems. The type of research used is qualitative with a case study approach. The participants in this study were 25 fifth-grade students who selected research subjects using purposive techniques that represent each analogical reasoning category based on the analogical reasoning test. Data collection techniques used indirect problem tests and interviews. Data analysis techniques included data reduction, presentation, and verification. The results showed that there were two categories of students' analogical reasoning when solving indirect analogy problems: (1) Indirect problem succeeded, students who successfully solve source problems and target problems by using all stages of analogical reasoning, namely representation and mathematical modeling, structuring, mapping, applying, verifying; (2) Indirect problem failed, students who did not successfully solve source problems and target problems by using all stages of analogical reasoning. The results of this study suggest that educators, especially at the elementary level, should explore more deeply the students' ability to solve indirect analogical problems with analogical reasoning.

Abstract

Both female and male elementary school students have difficulty doing action proof by using manipulative objects to provide conjectures and proof of the truth of a mathematical statement. Counter-examples can help elementary school students build informal proof stages to propose conjectures and proof of the truth of a mathematical statement more precisely. This study analyzes the action proof stages through counter-examples stimulation for male and female students in elementary schools. The action proof stage in this study focuses on three stages: proved their primitive conjecture, confronted counter-examples, and re-examined the conjecture and proof. The type of research used is qualitative with a case study approach. The research subjects were two of the 40 fifth-grade students selected purposively. The research instrument used is the task of proof and interview guidelines. Data collection techniques consist of Tasks, documentation, and interviews. The data analysis technique consists of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The analysis results show that at the stage of proving their primitive conjecture, the conjectures made by female and male students through action proofs using manipulative objects are still wrong. At the stage of confronted counter-examples, conjectures and proof made by female and male students showed an improvement. At the stage of re-examining the conjecture and proof, the conjectures and proof by female and male students were comprehensive. It can be concluded that the stages of proof of the actions of female and male students using manipulative objects through stimulation counter-examples indicate an improvement in conjectures and more comprehensive proof.

Abstract

The low learning outcomes in the equality of fractions material are due to the unavailability of mobile technology game media that can train and explore the pattern of equality of fractions appropriately. This study aims to produce a valid, practical, and effective mobile game for equality of fractions (MoGEF) to improve learning outcomes on equality of fractions material. This study uses research and development methods through analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects of this study were 29 students in the fourth grade of elementary school. Validity was measured by assessing two experts (mathematical education expert and information technology education expert). Practicality was measured through the results of the student response questionnaire, while effectiveness was measured through the posttest of student learning outcomes after using MoGEF. Data were collected using questionnaires and tests. The validity results obtained an average of 86.06% in the interval of 85.00% 100.00% with completely valid criteria. Practicality obtained an average of 4.659, which is in the interval of 2.50  3.25 with very practical criteria. Effectivenes shows the criteria of 79.83% berada pada interval 70.00%  85.00% dengan kriteria efektif. The effectiveness of the mobile game obtained a significance value of 2.127 > 2.048, which means it can improve the learning outcomes of elementary school students in the equality of fractions material. Therefore, the development of mobile games for equality of fraction is concluded to be very valid, very practical, and effective.
