Abstract

This research investigates the ways in which different groups of media users have different tendencies in consuming and believing fake news. These tendencies are examined through: (1) analysis of association of age and income level with the pattern of media consumption; (2) analysis of association of age and income level with types of media that is perceived as the most trustworthy. Using systematic random sampling, this study examines 400 households in Semarang, Central Java, with level of confidence of 95%.

Abstract

This research examines how adolescents perceive their memberships and involvement in virtual forums and whether the young generations see this involvement facilitate their engagement with public issues surrounding them. The increase of political discussions and political debates over the Internet and social media in Indonesia has become the trigger of this research to see whether adolescents as the group of new voters, even first-time voters, use virtual forums to be critically engaged in a discussion of public issues. Alternatively, this research would see whether their engagement in virtual communities is mainly related to entertainment, social connections, and other matters not directly related to politics and discussion of public issues. By interviewing a group of adolescents from at least eight provinces in Indonesia, this research examines the phenomenological experiences regarding their action, perception, and evaluation of their involvement through various virtual communities. This research highlights the importance of understanding adolescents’ experiences in virtual communities to understand better their tendency and attitude in relating to issues in their online and offline environments.

Abstract

Tribun Jateng Newspaper has its official website, jateng.tribunnews.com. It is built as the media convergence. On the website, there is a section called Enjoy Semarang. This section should focus on the travel news. As for its management, Enjoy Semarang section could not attract a lot of visitors. Based on the observation, the visitors of this section per month is only around 1,392. The news appearing on the website also covers the news of another region and abroad, and this is not appropriate with the name of the section. Not all published reports were written by reporters. There is some news which is adapted from foreign news websites or copied from websites coming from the same company group. None reporters deal with this section specifically. We have worked with Tribun Jateng to manage this section. The objective of this study is to provide the latest news and information about Central Java culinary, travel, and tips through accessible website. Moreover, we have handled the editorship management in the online media and the policy with regard to the selection of the news. The accumulative total of Tribun Jateng Travel visitors for two months is 13,000, exceeding the minimum target which is 4,329. In a day, the minimum obtained traffic is 900. The total of published articles for two months is 316 news, exceeding the minimum target, 300 articles. The published articles are fulfilled the editorial criteria and proper with the topics. Tribun Jateng Travel section has great potential to compete with hard news section. The quality and quantity of the content must be considered as priority. The increase of the traffic should be followed by the adherence of the rules of journalistic writing.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the reason why someone does cyberbully to celebrities and to describe the forms of cyberbullying itself. In addition, this research also aims to find out the celebrity’s view about cyberbullying and to find out the response given by celebrities. This is motivated by the rise of cyberbullying by users towards celebrities on social media. Cyberbullying is generally interpreted as an act of intimidation or verbal violence committed by perpetrators through the internet or social networks. This study using the phenomenology approach using qualitative descriptive analysis method. With the phenomenology approach, this study seeks to understand a phenomenon of cyberbullying through the perspective of the perpetrators and victims. The subject of this study consisted of six informants who were divided into four actors and two victims by conducting in-depth interviews. The findings of this study are seen from the perspective of the perpetrators and celebrities as victims. The conclusion of this research shows that cyberbullying is based on socio-economic jealousy, lack of activity, to justify certain circumstances and humor. The researcher concluded that the existence of social media, especially fake accounts, made the perpetrators ventured to commit cyberbullying and cyberbullying as joint actions. Furthermore, it shows that legal risk can limit the occurrence of cyberbullying, but there is a rationalization of the perpetrators to continue to do cyberbullying. And the latest findings from the point of view of the perpetrators indicate that the actions of cyberbullying can bring forth replies from victims to the perpetrators. From a celebrity's point of view, researchers found that the occurrence of cyberbullying was driven by technology. In addition, cyberbullying also affects the mentality of celebrities and becomes a scary specter. Furthermore, this study also found that celebrities showed apathy and self-evaluation as an action to protect celebrities from cyberbullying. Finally, cyberbullying is a circular cycle, in a sense; celebrities experiencing cyberbullying also do cyberbully.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out whether the forms of online activism carried out in social media are manifested in actual forms of activism in the real world (offline), and see the continuity and extension of online activism from Setali Indonesia, Tukar Baju, and Kekno Klambimu in actual activism, specifically about sustainable fashion movement in Indonesia. The results show that currently the three organizations appear as advocates to spread education, messages and awareness related to sustainable fashion through Instagram, which is followed by an extension of activism in the form of offline events in the real world. In this study, the use of Instagram social media has not been effective enough to bring up mass mobilization for collective action and resource mobilization. Sustainable fashion in the perspective of Instagram users has been effecting on cognitive and affective aspects, with positive responses and impressions. Meanwhile, in the behavioral aspect, only a few informants have fully implemented sustainable fashion in a sustainable manner in their daily life.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of knowlegde of World’s City of Batik’s city branding communication program on perceptions of city image and tourist visiting interest in Pekalongan city. Pekalongan City created a city branding called “World’s City of Batik” in 2011. Yet, within five years (2012-2016) the number of city tourist visits fluctuated and event tanded to decline. Based on hypothesis testing carried out using simple regression analysis, the results of this study shows that there is a significant effect of knowlegde of city branding communication program on perceptions of city image (0,000<0,05) with a determination value of 0,369, there is a significant effect of knowledge of city branding communication program on tourist visiting interest (0,000<0,05) with a determination value of 0,436, and there is a significant effect of perceptions of city image on tourist interest (0,0005<0,05) with a determination value of 0,462. Although there are a significant effect, there are other factors outside of this study that have a greater effect. That is because the constant values of the influence of the knowlegde of the city branding communication program on the perceptions of city image (41,086) and the influence of the knowlegde of the city branding communication program on tourist interest (20,852) are far greater than their coefficient values (0,761 and 0,580). Except the constant value (3,133) and coeffisien value (0,535) of the influence of the perceptions of city image on tourist interest is not too far apart. Therefore, further research can be carried out to examine other factors.

Abstract

ABH is serving a sentence by being placed in LPKA to be given training so that their psychological conditions including self-concept, self-disclosure, and learning motivation remain good. Meanwhile individuals who are convicted or sent to prison tend to have poor psychological conditions. The research aims to determine whether there is an influence between the views regarding imprisonment on ABH’s self-concept, self-disclosure, and learning motivation. The research uses the Total Institution Concept which explains the experience of individuals in the total institution influencing the self-concept, self-disclosure, and prisoners' motivation to be productive. Simple linear regression statistical test is used to determine the effect of 1 independent variable on 1 dependent variable. The study was conducted in LPKA Kutoarjo by using a total sampling of 51 respondents. The results showed that there was a positive influence between ABH's views of imprisonment on self-concept by 9% with a significance value (0.0340,05) and learning motivation with a significance value of (0.256>0.05). It can be concluded that the hypothesis stating there is an influence between ABH's views regarding imprisonment on ABH's self-concept was accepted. While the hypothesis which states there is an influence between ABH's views regarding imprisonment on self-disclosure and ABH's learning motivation is rejected. The findings show ABH have a good self-concept, they often do self-disclosure and have high motivation to learn.

Abstract

This research starts from the number of cyber bullying events that occur among adolescents that continue to increase. Cyber bullying involves many aspects and has a certain impact on victims who experience it ranging from physical health, psychological to academic. This study aims to describe the experience of cyber bullying in adolescents in a manner that is in accordance with the perspective of victims who experienced it. This study uses a phenomenological approach using qualitative descriptive analysis methods. Research with a phenomenological approach tries to understand the meaning of an event and influence each other with humans in certain situations. Therefore, this study seeks to present an overall picture to understand the meaning of the experience of cyber bullying in adolescents through the perspective of victims. This research sourced from five informants who were the victims of cyber bullying by conducting indepth interviews. The findings show that cyber bullying is symbolic violence that continues from the real world to the world of social media / technology. Victims who experience cyber bullying also experience direct bullying in the real world. According to the victim, bullying behavior carried out on social media was more severe than what was carried out directly. The perpetrators of cyber bullying also show different behaviors by showing greater courage and aggressiveness on social media than in the real world. Cyber bullying causes fear of social media for victims who experience it. This fear is manifested in prudence in social media. In addition, cyber bullying creates pressure on victims. The pressure was responded differently by the victims through problem management to save / defend themselves from cyber bullying. The problem management or the pattern of saving / defending themselves from cyber bullying pressure on the victim depends on the pattern of social interaction, value system, age and its relationship to the ability to manage emotions and the forms of abuse experienced. Cyber bullying also affects academic performance with three types of impacts, such as negative, positive and neutral. This depends on the form of cyber bullying experienced, the ability to manage emotions and the support of people around the victim.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how social media use by Jawa Pos Radar Semarang’s journalist in making news. In addition, it is also to find out the reasons for using social media, what social media is used, and the contribution made by the use of social media to Jawa Pos Radar Semarang’s journalist (positive or negative). This is motivated by the widespread use of social media in traditional media practices which creates a gap because of the polarization of the impact felt by traditional media journalists. In this study using a intrinsic case study approach using explanatory analysis methods. The subjects of this study consisted of six the informant was the Jawa Pos Radar Semarang’s journalist who used social media with several methods of data collection, including documentation, archival recordings, open-ended interviews, field observations, and participant observation. The results of this study found the conclusion that the use of social media by Jawa Pos Radar Semarang journalists in making news was indeed proven in several stages, namely the stages of news planning, news editing, and news publishing. The researcher concluded that from the use of social media, Jawa Pos journalist Radar Semarang received a positive contribution because social media provided benefits in terms of data transfer, speed of information, and ease of sharing, considering that in carrying out their work practices, journalists were still guided by the Press Law and Code of Ethics Journalism.

Abstract

Semakin canggihnya teknologi membuat manusia yang dulunya melakukan self disclosure atau pengungkapan diri dengan cara bertatap muka secara langsung (face-to-face), kini dapat dilakukan dengan menggunakan media sosial YouTube salah satunya dengan konten Video Blog (VLOG). Vlog menjadi salah satu trend yang banyak diikuti oleh masyarakat Indonesia, bahkan Presiden Joko Widodo pun juga membuat vlog. Penelitian ini fokus pada penggunaan metode campuran (mix methods) dengan metode kualitatif sebagai metode utama, dan metode kuantitatif sebagai metode pelengkap. Teori utama yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Teori Manajemen Privasi Komunikasi atau sering disebut CPM (Communication Privacy Management). Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan analisis isi kuantitatif, dan indepth interview. Penelitian dilakukan kepada lima orang vlogger dan lima video blog. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa pada saat seseorang melakukan self disclosure, ada 7 hal yang ditemukan oleh peneliti diantaranya : (1) tema self disclosure, (2) sifat self disclosure, (3) identitas diri, (4) fokus self disclosure, (5) aspek privasi, (6) tone emosional, (7) tempat keterbukaan. Dari ketujuh hal tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa self disclosure yang dilakukan oleh vlogger membahas mengenai percintaan, pekerjaan dan pendidikan. Selain konteks dari self disclosure itu sendiri, peneliti juga menemukan motivasi dari diri vlogger untuk melakukan pengungkapan diri yakni : (1) Tempat pelarian karena pengalaman buruk, (2) Tempat sharing, (3) Media penjernihan diri, (4) Mencari dukungan emosional, (5) Media dokumentasi. Respon atau tanggapan orang lain terhadap pengungkapan diri vlogger berupa respon negatif dan positif, Namun vlogger menceritakan bahwa ia lebih banyak mendapatkan respon positif daripada respon negatif pada saat melakukan pengungkapan diri melalui media sosial.
