Abstract

Background: Emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) in early adolescence are a growing public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Indonesia. The COVID-19 pandemic has further disrupted adolescent development, highlighting the need to identify both internal and external contributing factors to these issues. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems among early adolescents in Central Java, Indonesia, and to identify internal and external factors associated with these problems during the post-pandemic transition from hybrid to offline learning. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to June 2023 involving 256 adolescents aged 10–14 years in Central Java. Emotional and behavioral problems were measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire – Self-Report (SDQ-SR). Internal factors were assessed using the Reduced Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ) and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (ERQ-CA). External factors were measured through sociodemographic questionnaires and the Revised Family Communication Pattern (rFCP) Scale. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sample. Associations were analyzed using multiple logistic regression, and model fit was assessed using the Hosmer–Lemeshow test and Nagelkerke R². Results: The prevalence of adolescents with abnormal total difficulties scores was 15.6%. Among SDQ subscales, emotional problems showed the highest abnormal prevalence (30.1%), followed by peer problems (10.9%), conduct problems (10.5%), and hyperactivity-inattention (4.3%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that adolescents with an eveningness chronotype were significantly more likely to experience EBPs (OR = 21.11, 95% CI: 5.82–76.63, p <0.001). Similarly, low emotional regulation increased the risk (OR = 5.08, 95% CI: 2.18–11.80, p <0.001). Among external factors, low maternal education (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.12–1.94, p = 0.015) and low intrafamilial communication (OR = 3.35, 95% CI: 1.45–7.74, p = 0.004) were also significant predictors. The model showed good fit (Hosmer–Lemeshow χ² = 6.050, p = 0.642) and explained 40.6% of the variance in EBPs (Nagelkerke R² = 0.406). Conclusion: Emotional and behavioral problems remain a concern among Indonesian early adolescents in the post-pandemic, with emotional symptoms being the most prevalent. Internal risk factors, such as eveningness chronotype and low emotional regulation, as well as external factors like maternal education level and intrafamilial communication, were significantly associated with these issues. These findings suggest a need for early mental health screening and targeted interventions. For nursing practice, this highlights the role of nurses in school and community settings in promoting emotional regulation, strengthening family communication, and delivering health education tailored to familial and developmental contexts.

Abstract

Introduction: Indonesia has several institutions, policies, and laws to protect children from all forms of violence, including bullying that impacts physical, psychological, and social health and even death. However, the number of cases of bullying in adolescents still increases. It is related to a lack of knowledge about bullying and is associated with norms in the community. Method: The analysis uses a discourse analysis approach, "What's the problem represented to be". This method analyzes how the problem of bullying among adolescents is formed, and the forms of bullying prevention are represented in state documents. The analysis steps include: collecting the policy documents related to child protection and health (seven laws and three national policies); Reading the policy text as a whole; rereading the text and underlining the concepts; doing coding and theme analysis; and answering the question. Results: Three main problems of bullying in adolescents that can be identified include: Theme 1. Terminology of children and adolescents; Theme 2. Children are a vulnerable and disempowered group; Theme 3. Agreement and clarity on child protection related to violence, especially bullying, with perpetrators and victims being children. Conclusions: Laws and policies have a crucial role in constructing and representing the problem of adolescent bullying in Indonesia. Nurses can use these results to develop adolescent bullying prevention programs through firmness and alignment with policies and legislation.

Abstract

Background: Research related to health literacy among children is limited due to the lack of appropriate measurement tools for this population. The measurement tools used to measure health literacy among children are usually adapted from the adult versions. Researches related to instruments measuring health literacy that can be used for children in school environments are inadequate. This study aimed to synthesize research on the instruments that measure health literacy among children in the community setting. Method: We carried out a scoping review to synthesize research on the instruments measuring health literacy among children in the community setting. The article searching process was targeted to collect articles with corresponding populations, concepts, and contexts. The search was conducted through PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Sage Journals databases published between 2010- 2020. The selection process was done using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methods (PRISMA). The following critical appraisal used The Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. Results: Out of 328 studies, six articles were selected for this review. Consensus showed that health literacy needs to be applied in various situations. Improving the health literacy of children in the early stages is crucial for children's development and personal health. Several instruments can be applied to measure health literacy in school-age children, such as Health Literacy Measures for Adolescents, Health Literacy for School-aged Children in the English, Turkish and Lithuanian versions, and Chinese version of the eight-item Health Literacy Assessment Tool. Generally, the instruments are adequate, while only two instruments in this study are inadequate because they do not describe the validity and reliability.
