Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of students' scientific reasoning skills in the subject of static fluids. This research was conducted through a descriptive quantitative survey. The study involved 110 high school students from Grade 12 in Malang, Indonesia, during the 2023/2024 academic year. Six scientific reasoning skill test instruments were used to collect data. The data collection was carried out using six test instruments, covering Control of Variables, Conservation Reasoning, Probabilistic Reasoning, Correlational Reasoning, Hypothetical-Deductive Reasoning, and Proportional Reasoning, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.744, indicating high reliability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tests, followed by classification of skill levels based on static fluid subtopics and scientific reasoning indicators. According to the survey results, 33% of students demonstrated low-level scientific reasoning skills. Based on the static fluid subtopics, the highest to lowest scores were found in Archimedes' Principle (35%), hydrostatic pressure (34%), and Pascal's Law (31%), all within the low category. In terms of scientific reasoning sub-indicators, the highest to lowest scores were observed in Hypothetical-Deductive Reasoning (42%) and Probabilistic Reasoning (41%), categorized as moderate, while lower scores were found in Correlational Reasoning (39%), Conservation Reasoning (29%), Control of Variables (26%), and Proportional Reasoning (24%), all within the low category. The results suggest that students struggle with analyzing factors affecting sinking, floating, and buoyancy; identifying variables influencing hydrostatic pressure; and performing mathematical calculations related to force and cross-sectional area comparisons. These findings indicate that instruction needs to be strengthened to help students improve their scientific reasoning, particularly in the indicators of Conservation Reasoning, Control of Variables, and Proportional Reasoning, which remain low. To maximize the effectiveness of this research, educators should employ active learning models such as the 7E Learning Cycle Model integrated with the STEAM approach, which can directly engage students.

Abstract

The digital wallet is a popular electronic payment system in Indonesia, with two main types: server-based and chip-based. The decision to adopt a digital wallet is influenced by several factors. This study employs the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which posits that the acceptance of information technology is primarily driven by two factors: perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. In this study, the independent variables are perceived ease of use and perceived risk, while the dependent variable is interest in using the ShopeePay digital wallet. A quantitative approach was used, with primary data collected through a questionnaire completed by 100 respondents. The data was analyzed using a multiple linear regression model with SPSS software. The results indicate that both perceived ease of use and perceived risk significantly impact interest in using the ShopeePay digital wallet. This study contributes to the understanding of factors influencing the adoption of digital wallets in Indonesia, particularly focusing on ShopeePay.

Abstract

Conceptual understanding is a vital component in physics education, particularly for static fluid concepts, which are often sources of misconceptions among students. Common misunderstandings include incorrect interpretations of hydrostatic pressure and Pascal's law. This study aims to develop and analyze a conceptual understanding test instrument for static fluid materials using the Rasch Model. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed, involving 75 eleventh-grade students from three high schools in Lumajang and Malang, selected through cluster random sampling. The instrument comprised 16 multiple-choice questions based on eight conceptual indicators and underwent expert validation by two physics teachers. Data were analyzed using the Winstep application to assess validity, reliability, difficulty level, and item discrimination. The results revealed that 12 out of 16 test items met the validity criteria, with an expert validation score of 98.3% categorized as "very valid." Item reliability was rated at 0.96 (very good), while person reliability was 0.47 (very poor), indicating significant variations in student responses. The difficulty levels were balanced: 2 very easy items, two easy items, five moderate items, one difficult item, and two very difficult items. Discrimination analysis grouped respondents into two categories and items into seven distinct groups, showcasing the instrument's effectiveness in identifying variations in student understanding. In conclusion, the developed instrument is valid and reliable for assessing students' conceptual understanding of static fluid topics. The study highlights the need for further validation with larger and more diverse samples to enhance the instrument's applicability across broader educational contexts.

Abstract

This research examines the global trends regarding applying computational thinking (CT) in physics learning through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. By analyzing 30 selected articles published in 2019-2024, this study aims to provide insight into the types of research, subjects, instruments, physics materials, and supporting media used. The results showed that most studies focused on developing CT-based learning products, such as interactive modules and simulations, which were predominantly applied to high school students with materials such as electricity, temperature, and heat. Frequently used media include Scratch, Arduino, and Visual Python, which are proven to improve students' critical thinking, collaboration, and algorithmic skills. However, CT implementation is faced with challenges such as limited technology facilities, teacher training needs, and the complexity of curriculum integration. This research recommends the exploration of problem-, project-, and game-based learning approaches to support the development of CT at different levels of education. The results are expected to be the basis for developing more innovative and effective learning strategies to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the level of problem difficulty and students’ misconceptions on the topic of temperature and heat using a two-tier diagnostic test. A two-tier diagnostic test was administered to a sample of undergraduate physics education students at three major universities in East Java to assess their understanding of these basic physics concepts. The first tier of the test evaluated students’ ability to answer content-related questions correctly, while the second tier explored the reasoning behind their responses. Data were also collected on the Certainty Response Index (CRI) to determine students’ confidence levels in their answers. Data analysis was conducted to determine the problem's difficulty level and identify common misconceptions. The results showed students had difficulty solving problems at levels C3 and C4, especially on representation problems. These findings highlight the need for appropriate teaching strategies to address these misconceptions and improve students’ conceptual understanding of temperature and heat. This study provides valuable insights into assessing students’ knowledge and identifying key areas for instructional improvement in thermodynamics teaching.

Abstract

Design thinking has emerged as a critical 21st-century competence, yet it remains under-emphasised in Islamic schools, particularly Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic senior high schools). This study investigates the design-thinking mindset of Madrasah Aliyah students studying digital-technology-based physics concepts. Employing a descriptive-correlational design, we used descriptive statistics and Pearson/Spearman correlation analyses to examine relationships among five dimensions of design thinking: (1) Growth Mindset and Endurance, (2) Empathy and Human-Centred Design, (3) Teamwork and Diverse Perspectives, (4) Creativity and Problem-Solving through Prototyping, and (5) Curiosity and Learning Motivation. Data were gathered from 136 students using a validated 25-item questionnaire. Overall mindset levels ranged from moderate to high; Curiosity and Empathy recorded the highest scores, whereas Endurance ranked lowest. Gender- and grade-level comparisons revealed that female students exhibited significantly higher Endurance. Although the cross-sectional design limited insights into developmental trends, a significant negative correlation emerged between Endurance and the other dimensions. These findings highlight the need to balance resilience with curiosity, creativity, and empathy within a design-thinking framework and offer guidance for integrating digital technologies and design-thinking principles into physics instruction while respecting the madrasah cultural context. Future research could explore the impact of interactive digital physics simulations on the development of the five design-thinking dimensions among Madrasah Aliyah students.
