Abstract

Shipping safety is fundamental to the maritime industry, and navigational systems are central to safe operations. In line with IMO/SOLAS requirements, the Automatic Identification System (AIS) supports collision avoidance, ship traffic services, navigational aids, search and rescue, and accident investigation. AIS continuously broadcasts a vessel’s identity, position, course, speed, and navigational status, enabling other ships and coastal stations to track targets and anticipate risk. Integrated with ECDIS, radar, and ARPA, AIS enhances situational awareness in meeting, crossing, and overtaking situations by providing parameters such as CPA (Closest Point of Approach) and ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival). This study analyzes the role of AIS in navigational safety on a general cargo vessel (MV Guhi Mas). The findings indicate that AIS is critical to safe navigation: it improves target identification around the vessel, facilitates real-time data exchange with VTS, strengthens decision-making on the bridge, and contributes to incident prevention and post-event analysis. Regulatory carriage requirements further underscore AIS as an essential instrument for reducing maritime accidents.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Cadet Worksheet (LKT) in helping cadets understand the calculation of the Waterplane (WP) area and Ton per Centimetre Immersion (TPC) using Simpson’s 1/3 rule. The main problem underlying this research is that many cadets still find it difficult to connect integral concepts with numerical data in the context of shipping. The research was conducted at the Surabaya Maritime Polytechnic involving cadets from the DIII Marine Engineering and DIV Ship Machinery Engineering Technology programs as subjects. The method employed was a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches using instruments such as field notes, a positive opinion questionnaire (KPP), and cognitive ability tests (TKK). Qualitative analysis was carried out through data triangulation, while quantitative analysis used the Wilcoxon test since the data were not normally distributed. The results indicated that the learning process was student-centered, the lecturer implemented the lessons systematically, and cadet activities were relevant to the learning objectives. A total of 100% of cadets gave positive opinions regarding the LKT, and the Wilcoxon test results showed a significant improvement in cognitive ability after the learning process. Thus, it can be concluded that the developed LKT is effective in supporting cadets’ understanding of the application of Simpson’s 1/3 rule in calculating WP and TPC.

Abstract

Marine environmental pollution stemming from ship operations—specifically within the engine room—remains a critical ecological threat to global marine biodiversity. Incidents involving oil spills and illegal waste discharge are frequently triggered by technical system failures, compounded by crew anxiety during emergencies. Marine engineering cadets, as future engine room operators, are required to master not only mechanical aspects (hard skills) but also adaptive problem-solving capabilities under extreme psychological pressure. This study aims to analyze the urgency, efficacy, and dynamics of problem-solving skills among marine engineering cadets at the Marine Polytechnic as a means of mitigating marine pollution risks during engine room crises. A descriptive qualitative method employing a purposive case study approach was utilized. The research focused on observing final-year marine engineering cadets during training sessions in the Engine Room Simulator (ERS) laboratory. Data collection relied on triangulation, incorporating structured participatory observation based on Engine-room Resource Management (ERM) competency rubrics, in-depth interviews, and an analysis of simulator data logs. The findings reveal significant cognitive limitations within the cadets' problem-solving cycle. While the cadets demonstrated excellent performance in the problem identification stage (85%), their capacity declined sharply during the solution execution phase (40%) and the environmental impact evaluation stage (30%).
