Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the innovation process in the performance packaging of Tunggul Kawung as a community-based arts and culture learning medium at Kampung Seni EDAS. The research employed a qualitative approach using Participatory Action Research (PAR), conducted through two action cycles involving three art practitioners and 15 adolescents aged 13–19. In addition, approximately 50 workshop participants were involved as part of the participatory evaluation process. The research instruments included participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, audio-visual documentation, and a Likert-scale survey. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and cyclical conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the innovation was integrated into three main aspects: ergonomic and symbolic instrument design, adaptive musical development aligned with contemporary dynamics, and high-mobility choreography that supports kinesthetic learning. These innovations created a more participatory, inclusive, and meaningful learning experience for adolescents. Furthermore, the study demonstrates how performative innovation in traditional arts can reshape both the cognitive understanding and kinesthetic engagement of learners within the framework of sustainable arts education.

Abstract

This study examines Pupuh Pucung as a culturally grounded medium for character education by analyzing its moral values through the educational philosophy of Ki Hadjar Dewantara. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, this study analyzes selected Pupuh Pucung texts to identify character values and interpret their alignment with the principles of Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha, Ing Madya Mangun Karsa, and Tut Wuri Handayani. The results show that Pupuh Pucung contains core character values, including perseverance, discipline, responsibility, self-reflection, togetherness, and social awareness, which are conveyed through simple, rhythmic, and easily memorized poetic structures. These values function not merely as moral advice but as experiential narratives that encourage internalization through reflection and social context. The analysis further reveals that Pupuh Pucung operationalizes Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s educational principles by presenting moral exemplars, fostering collective learning motivation, and encouraging learners’ autonomy. This study concludes that Pupuh Pucung is not only a traditional literary form but also a pedagogical text with strong relevance for character education based on local wisdom. The findings imply that integrating Pupuh Pucung into educational practices can strengthen moral awareness, cultural identity, and holistic character development in both formal and nonformal learning contexts. Future research is recommended to explore the empirical implementation of Pupuh Pucung–based learning models and their impact on students character development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pedagogical and philosophical meanings contained in the kacapi instrument in the Karungut oral tradition of the Dayak Ngaju people in Central Kalimantan and its relevance to Ki Hadjar Dewantara's philosophy of education. Using descriptive-ethnographic qualitative methods, this study explores the symbolic and moral dimensions of the kacapi instrument and Karungut as a form of cultural pedagogy. The results show that the kacapi functions not only as a musical accompaniment, but also as a symbol of balance, spirituality, and wisdom, which is embodied through symbolic ornaments such as Batang Garing and Burung Enggang. This representation is in line with Ki Hadjar Dewantara's three principles of education, namely Ing Ngarso SungTulodo, Ing Madyo Mangun Karso, and Tut Wuri Handayani, which emphasize character building through exemplary behavior, guidance, and freedom of expression. Thus, the recontextualization of the kacapi in the Karungut tradition becomes a form of culture-based arts education that fosters moral character, ecological awareness, and cultural identity.
