Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women worldwide. Mastectomy, a standard treatment, often leads to profound physical and psychological changes that can affect women's sexuality and their need for social support. Objective: This study explored how post-mastectomy breast cancer patients in Indonesia perceive their sexuality and the social support they receive during recovery. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological design was employed. Fifteen women who had undergone mastectomy were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Van Manen's phenomenological approach, with NVivo 12 Plus used for data management. Results: Six major themes emerged: (1) sex and gender perceptions remained stable despite physical changes; (2) sexual identity and femininity were preserved; (3) participants consistently identified as heterosexual, in line with their premorbid orientation; (4) intimacy was shaped by partner support and body acceptance; (5) reproductive limitations were acknowledged, particularly among older women; and (6) social support from family, peers, and healthcare providers was critical for emotional adjustment and sexual well-being. Conclusion: Despite altered body image, most participants maintained a strong sense of femininity and sexual identity. Emotional, instrumental, and informational support from spouses, children, communities, and healthcare professionals facilitated positive adaptation. Integrating sexuality-focused counseling and involving families in post-mastectomy care are recommended to promote holistic recovery.

Abstract

Background: The concern surrounding the physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with breast cancer emerged during COVID-19. However, there is a lack of sufficient studies that have specifically addressed this issue. It is crucial to emphasize the evaluation of this aspect as it significantly impacts the enhancement of future physical and mental HRQoL for these patients.Purpose: This study investigated the determinants of physical and mental HRQoL among patients with breast cancer during COVID-19.Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted between September and October 2022, participation involved 260 patients diagnosed with breast cancer, selected through convenience sampling. Our observation focused on assessing the outcomes of physical and mental HRQoL using the Short Form (SF-12) questionnaire for data collection. Additionally, the data underwent analysis via binary logistic regression. Results: Respondents aged <50 years (p=0.010; aOR=2.08; 95% CI=1.18–3.67), unemployed (p=0.022; aOR=2.29; 95% CI=1.16–4.53), and had high depression (p=0.026; aOR=2.41; 95% CI=1.13–5.12) have a more likelihood to have low physical HRQoL. In addition, unemployed respondents (p=<0.001; aOR=4.15; 95% CI=2.14–8.04) and had high anxiety (p=0.004; aOR=2.71; 95% CI=1.38–5.33) have more likelihood to have low mental HRQoL.Conclusion: In this study, it was found that anxiety, depression, and unemployed respondents were associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing lower physical and mental HRQoL. Nurses and healthcare workers should prioritize addressing psychological issues such as anxiety and depression among breast cancer patients, emphasizing the necessity for interventions aimed at alleviating these concerns.

Abstract

Introduction: Philosophical viewpoints from the first-hand source regarded as the best inception of COVID-19 knowledge are not widely explored. Humanity's understanding grounded on experiences becomes substantial only when stringent documentation of any events is performed carefully. COVID-19 as a phenomenon and as an ongoing struggle has myriad global impacts; hence the study aims to explore the understanding of nursing students' stances regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in their daily life. Methods: The study used a qualitative study design with online survey. A total of 41 nursing students were recruited through total sampling technique. The study was conducted to students in a university in the Philippines. Interview guidelines used open questions and were spread online. The data were subjected to thematic analysis. Results: The thematic analysis revealed five organizing themes, such as communication, commitment, care, collaboration, and change. Those themes were found among nursing students' stance regarding the COVID-19 phenomenon. Conclusions: The communication, commitment, care, collaboration, and change as development of a crisis-induced framework from study findings satisfies the essential finding that the pandemic is likewise giving rise to a new normal. Moreover, the results assist nursing students and other health-inspired domains to effectively maintain positivity amidst catastrophic climates.

Abstract

Introduction: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) presents as a sleep-related issue in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), contributing to heightened sleep disturbances and diminished quality of life. Consequently, this meta-analysis was conducted to assess the prevalence of RLS among CKD patients. Methods: A comprehensive search for articles published between inception and September 2023 was conducted across CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, Ovid-MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software version 3.0 with random effects models was used for pooled prevalence and prediction interval analysis. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 test and Cochran's Q-statistic. The quality of the studies was evaluated using Hoy's risk of bias. Additionally, moderator analyses were performed to investigate variations in the prevalence estimates among the included studies. Results: A total of 97 studies were included in this meta-analysis with 315,875 participants. The pooled prevalence of RLS among CKD patients was 25% (95%CI: 20% to 32%). In terms of the demographic breakdown, the prevalence of RLS was nearly comparable in adults and children/adolescents at 25% and 21%, respectively. The prediction interval indicated a potential future RLS prevalence ranging from 1% to 88%. Notably, iron and phosphorus levels emerged as significant moderating factors influencing the prevalence of RLS. Conclusions: Roughly 25% of individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) encounter restless legs syndrome (RLS). It is imperative to foster collaboration among healthcare professionals to facilitate proactive management and early assessment of RLS, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for CKD patients.

Abstract

Background. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that can exacerbate depressive symptoms due to increased symptom burden complications that lead to functional impairment and decreased quality of life. People with T2DM are twice as likely to experience loss of physical function, and decreased physical fitness and strength than people without T2DM. Physical effort is an integral part of programs for disease prevention and management. Physical fitness, depression status, and quality of life have not been specifically evaluated and described after training in these two environments.  This article aims to find and review land and water-based physical exercise intervention research as an alternative solution to improve physical fitness, depression status, and quality of life of T2DM patients. Research Method. Descriptive analysis method. Systematic reviews were evaluated using the PRISMA checklist. Database: Scopus, Science direct, Pubmed, CINAHL, and ProQuest. Article search with the PICOS framework. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal as an alternative to assessing the risk of study bias. Findings. The 25 articles that met the inclusion criteria consisted of 18 (Randomized Control Trials) and 7 (Quasy-experiments). Consisting of land and water-based aerobic classifications that are useful in the physical and psychological aspects of T2DM. Conclusion. There is an influence of land-based and aquatic physical exercise on physical fitness, depressive status, and quality of life in T2DM patients.
