Abstract

This study aims to develop and strengthen students’ nationalistic awareness through a literature learning model that integrates Indonesian national songs—Indonesia Pusaka, Syukur, Gugur Bunga, and Sepasang Mata Bola—using Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The focus is on embedding values of patriotism and love of the nation while enhancing language learning in a digital learning environment. The research employs a quantitative design with a simple experimental approach. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test to measure students’ level of nationalistic understanding and language comprehension before and after the implementation of the model. The participants consisted of undergraduate students in an English education program who were introduced to the lyrical and cultural dimensions of the songs via mobile learning applications. Findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ comprehension and appreciation of the patriotic values embedded in the selected songs. The post-test results demonstrated higher scores compared to the pre-test, showing that students not only acquired better linguistic understanding but also developed a deeper sense of national pride and identity. The use of MALL provided flexibility, accessibility, and interactive engagement, making literature learning more effective and appealing to digital-native students.

Abstract

Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang efektif di jenjang SMA memerlukan integrasi empat keterampilan berbahasa yaitu listening, speaking, reading, dan writing secara terpadu. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris melalui pelatihan penggunaan media berbasis Artificial Intelligence (AI) bagi siswa kelas XI di SMA Negeri 1 Remboken. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi pelatihan interaktif, praktik langsung, dan evaluasi berbasis pre-test dan post-test dengan pendekatan performance-based assessment. Hasil menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan pada semua aspek keterampilan berbahasa, dengan peningkatan rata-rata nilai sebesar 14,375 poin. Aspek speaking dan writing mengalami peningkatan tertinggi berkat penggunaan aplikasi Elsa Speak dan Grammarly. Kegiatan ini juga meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa dan keterampilan guru dalam mengintegrasikan teknologi ke dalam pembelajaran. Kesimpulannya, pemanfaatan teknologi AI secara sistematis mampu mendorong pengembangan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris secara terintegrasi dan mendukung transformasi pembelajaran abad ke-21 di sekolah menengah.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Picture-Driven technique in improving English vocabulary mastery among second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bolaang. This research was conducted using quantitative method. This study used a pre- experimental design with a single group for both the pre- and post-tests. The data were analyzed using statistical tests to examine variations in the pre-test and post-test scores the pupils in the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Bolaang consisting of 25 students were the subjects of this study. There were 20 numbers for each test given the students. The results of this study show If the pre-test's average score is (35.52) The post-test is (62.56) The post-test result is higher than the pre-test. Based on this result, Pictures have an extremely important impact on pupils' vocabulary. The result of a notable rise in scores from the pre-test to the post-test indicate that images not only help in understanding the meaning of words, but also make it easier for students to pronounce them more accurately and confidently. With the stimulus in the form of image-based techniques, students can master the meaning and pronunciation of a word more effectively, so that their ability to spread knowledge increases significantly.

Abstract

Despite extensive research on Mark Twain's works, few studies have examined his portrayal of gender roles in "Diaries of Adam and Eve" through a feminist lens. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing Twain's representation of Eve and Adam, exploring how his writing both reflects and challenges societal beliefs centered around male power and control. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing feminist and gender theory to conduct a close textual analysis of "Diaries of Adam and Eve." The study focuses on language, tone, and themes used in Twain's portrayal of the two characters, contextualizing these elements within the historical and social framework of women's rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Findings reveal a nuanced depiction of gender roles that both conform to and subvert traditional expectations. Eve is portrayed as intelligent, curious, and capable, challenging conventional female stereotypes and reflecting an emerging understanding of women's rights and equality. In contrast, Adam's characterization aligns more closely with traditional notions of male authority and power. The study demonstrates a clash between traditional views on gender roles and modern perspectives on women's rights within Twain's work. It highlights Twain's critical examination of gender issues and his implicit support for women's equality, contributing to our understanding of his progressive stance on gender roles. This research provides valuable insights into Twain's subtle commentary on societal norms and his contribution to early feminist discourse through literature.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This activity explores the implementation of integrated skills in English language learning and the incorporation of website-based learning media at the Excelsis Deo Manado Community Learning Activity Center (PKBM). The research addresses challenges in English education, including low student motivation, conventional teaching methods, and limited use of learning media. An integrated skills approach using children's literature is proposed to enhance language proficiency and cultural awareness. To support this method and overcome media limitations, the study introduces training on creating website-based learning media for teachers. This training covers web design, content management systems, and interactive element creation, aiming to produce engaging online learning environments. The combination of integrated skills teaching and modern, website-based learning media is expected to significantly improve students' English language skills and overall learning experience. This approach not only addresses current educational challenges but also bridges the gap between traditional pedagogy and contemporary learner needs, while providing older teachers with opportunities to adapt to new educational technologies. Keywords: Integrated skills, Website-based learning media, Students and Teacher Training, Children's literature.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the social facts and interpret quotes that express them in the novel "The Plague" in Oran City, Algeria, and the impacts on society. In this research, the writer used a qualitative method; the data was collected by reading the novel and analyzed using a sociological approach. As the result of this research, there are nine social facts from the book: Social Conditions (Society and Environment), Rat Pest, Health Committee, Epidemic/Plague, Prevention/ Government Rules, Lockdown, and Religious Activities (Prayers and Sermons).

Abstract

Pembelajaran kosakata adalah aspek yang sangat penting bagi siswa ketika mereka belajar bahasa Inggris. Siswa membutuhkan metode pembelajaran yang baru agar mereka dapat menikmati proses pembelajaran yang sedang berlangsung. Guru juga harus mampu menyampaikan materi dengan baik dan menggunakan media dengan tepat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah media lagu dapat memberikan perbedaan yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan kosa kata bahasa Inggris siswa kelas tujuh MTs Pesantren Darul Falah Enrekang dan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan media lagu lebih efektif daripada penggunaan media lagu. dari media konvensional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah 60 siswa. Terdiri dari 2 kelas dan setiap kelas terdiri dari 30 siswa. Dari hasil perhitungan pada saat pre test atau sebelum treatment diperoleh nilai t0 = 1,517< tt = 2,001, yang menunjukkan bahwa kedua kelas tersebut layak untuk dipelajari karena tidak memiliki perbedaan yang signifikan dalam peningkatan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa setelah diuji dengan menggunakan uji-t, namun setelah diberikan perlakuan dan nilai postes diperoleh nilai t0 = 3,201 > tt = 2,001, dengan tingkat signifikansi α = 0,05 dan df = n1 + n2 - 2 = 58, maka t0 lebih tinggi dari tt yang menunjukkan ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam peningkatan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa antar kelas yang diajar menggunakan media lagu (percobaan kelas) dan kelas yang diajar menggunakan media konvensional (kelas kontrol) setelah diberikan pre-test..

Abstract

The short story "The Rocking-Horse Winner" by D.H. Lawrence offers a profound exploration of human psychology, focusing on desire, obsession, and the consequences of unbridled ambition. This study employs a psychoanalytic approach to analyze the uncontrollable obsession of the main character, Paul, particularly through the lens of Freud's Oedipus Complex theory. This research aims to explore the underlying factors that drive Paul’s obsession with luck and money in D.H. Lawrence’s “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” with a particular focus on the psychological and emotional influences stemming from his relationship with his mother. It also seeks to examine how these motivations shape the narrative and contribute to the story’s broader themes of materialism, identity, and emotional neglect. This article also highlights the potent symbolism within the story, including the rocking horse and the house of whispers, which symbolize Paul's inner turmoil and the tragic outcomes of his obsession. Comparative analysis with Jung’s and Lacan’s theories further enriches the understanding of Paul's psychological complexity, providing insights into how his obsession influenced his mental state and family relationships. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the story's psychological and symbolic dimensions, offering valuable insights into the impact of parental influence on a child's mental health and behavior.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze literary theories and approaches that can be applied in Margaret Atwood’s works, one of her novels entitled The Year of The Flood. This issue or social phenomena of the pandemic and post-pandemic era in the novel reflected by Atwood was remarkable; the image and the moral values in the book remain toward humans universally. This study’s literary approach is ‘Mimetic Theory’ by M.H Abrams, which analyzes social aspects as a real-life reflection. A descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. The data consists of both primary data and supporting data. The main dates were mainly from the novel The Year of The Flood by Atwood (2009). The supporting data were from reference books, journals, and articles related to the research. In the final result, there were five aspects, namely the environments, feelings, economic factors, crime, and faith, which were related and analyzed using mimetic theory

Abstract

This study delves into Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar," focusing on the protagonist Esther Greenwood's nuanced portrayal of mental illness. Through a qualitative approach, the research explores Esther's psychological journey, examining her struggles and resilience in the face of mental health challenges. The study employs various literary analysis techniques to dissect and interpret the novel's content, with the primary data source being Plath's prose itself. This approach provides a broader context and theoretical framework for understanding the novel's themes, blending literary analysis with psychological and sociological perspectives. The study pays particular attention to the depiction of 1950s psychiatric treatments, critically examining their inadequacies and limitations. Special focus is given to the portrayal of electroconvulsive therapy, a controversial treatment that plays a significant role in Esther's experiences. Findings underscore the critical importance of empathetic care and robust societal support in addressing mental health challenges. By delving into Esther's experiences, the research illuminates the profound impact of understanding, compassion, and appropriate treatment on individuals struggling with mental illness. Furthermore, this analysis reveals how Plath's work continues to resonate with contemporary readers, touching on timeless themes of identity, societal expectations, and the human psyche. The study argues that "The Bell Jar" serves as a poignant exploration of mental illness and a critique of societal norms and mental health treatment in mid-20th century America. This interdisciplinary approach appeals to a broad scholarly audience interested in literature, mental health, and social history, offering insights that bridge multiple fields of study.
