Abstract

This study highlights the effectiveness of authentic assessment in evaluating higher-order cognitive competencies, including problem-solving, reasoning, analytical thinking, creativity, and the development of metacognitive awareness. Through authentic assessment, students can apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts by constructing responses based on critical analysis, identifying cause-and-effect relationships with supporting evidence, and solving problems through logical reasoning. The research employed a descriptive qualitative analysis method, utilizing tests, surveys, and document analysis as instruments. The study involved 40 fifth-semester students from the English Education Department enrolled in an Advanced Writing course. Authentic assessment was implemented in the context of expository writing, specifically problem-solution essays, with a focus on (1) formulating relevant and critical issues and arguments, (2) establishing clear and logical connections between ideas, and (3) presenting multiple solutions supported by sound reasoning. The findings indicate that students' average performance in writing expository texts reached a score of 78, classified as high or good. Given its advantages, authentic assessment is strongly recommended in teaching and learning. It offers several benefits, including (a) promoting students creative and critical thinking abilities, (b) enabling them to construct meaningful learning experiences by selecting and organizing relevant responses through situational analysis, and (c) integrating instructional, learning, and assessment activities. Furthermore, for students, authentic assessment significantly enhances academic writing proficiency and productivity, equipping them with essential skills for handling more complex tasks in real-world contexts.

Abstract

This study utilized Kemmis et al.s (2014) action research paradigm. It implemented a two-cycle action study within a single semester, encompassing four stages of learning tasks: comprehension of the problem, monitoring of students learning activities, problem-solving, assessment, and concluding. Every cycle offered learning activities that focused on metacognitive and critical thinking to refine students ability to write persuasive arguments. During the previous cycle, the students showed strong skills in stating their goals and identifying their planned actions. They used different approaches to pinpoint a key topic for their writing and monitor their progress by effectively managing their available time. The investigation found that integrating metacognitive and crucial thinking processes into instructional methods improved students argumentative writing skills, starting with critical skill requirements. Integrating metacognition into writing training is vital for enhancing writing skills at the college level. This study made a special effort to guarantee that each stage was attentively examined and received constructive recommendations for enhancement before going to further steps. However, it is important to acknowledge limitations. The study did not assess the long-term retention of enhanced writing skills, and the sample size may limit generalization. Additionally, while metacognition and critical thinking were beneficial, other factors influencing writing skills were not extensively explored. Future research could address these aspects for a more comprehensive understanding of sustained skill development.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and strengthen students’ nationalistic awareness through a literature learning model that integrates Indonesian national songs—Indonesia Pusaka, Syukur, Gugur Bunga, and Sepasang Mata Bola—using Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The focus is on embedding values of patriotism and love of the nation while enhancing language learning in a digital learning environment. The research employs a quantitative design with a simple experimental approach. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test to measure students’ level of nationalistic understanding and language comprehension before and after the implementation of the model. The participants consisted of undergraduate students in an English education program who were introduced to the lyrical and cultural dimensions of the songs via mobile learning applications. Findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ comprehension and appreciation of the patriotic values embedded in the selected songs. The post-test results demonstrated higher scores compared to the pre-test, showing that students not only acquired better linguistic understanding but also developed a deeper sense of national pride and identity. The use of MALL provided flexibility, accessibility, and interactive engagement, making literature learning more effective and appealing to digital-native students.

Abstract

The Sun Also Rises, written by Ernest Hemingway in 1926, is an influential literary work that depicts the post-war Lost Generation. The novel captures the profound sense of disillusionment experienced by individuals from the Lost Generation coping with the collapse of traditional values. The present study aims at analyzing the disillusionment depicted by the character of Jake Barnes in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and its implication on English language learning. This qualitative research is conducted by using Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises as the primary data and is supported by secondary data in the form of academic papers, research papers, and books related to the topic of disillusionment in literary works. To collect data, the researchers employed the observation and note-taking technique in which the researcher read the novel several times and took notes related to the topic of disillusionment. The obtained data were analyzed using an objective approach focusing on character development, narrative structure, and symbolic elements. The findings show that Jake Barnes, the protagonist in The Sun Also Rises, experiences the disillusionment in the form of disappointment caused by the aftermath of World War I. He shows his disappointment towards himself and the other character in the novel, as shown in the dialogues and descriptions in the novel. The study suggests that The Sun Also Rises can be utilized for English language learning in which both students and teachers can benefit by the use of the novel as a learning media, learning sources and learning object.

Abstract

Acquiring vocabulary is a crucial component of English language acquisition for kids. Students require innovative instructional approaches to derive pleasure from the continuous learning process. The teacher should be able to communicate the subject matter and suitably utilize media effectively. This study aimed to ascertain whether the utilization of Music media may yield a noteworthy disparity in enhancing students' English vocabulary and to discover whether the efficacy of music media surpasses that of conventional media. The sample size for this study consisted of 60 students. The system has two classrooms, with each class including a total of 30 students. The pre-test results yielded a t-value of t0 = 1.517, indicating that both classes are worth studying as there is no significant difference in the increase of students' English vocabulary based on the t-test. However, after treatment and the post-test, the t-value obtained was t0 = 3.201, higher than the critical t-value (tt = 2.001) at a significance level of α = 0.05 and degrees of freedom (df) = 58. This indicates a significant difference in students' English vocabulary increase between the experimental class (taught using Music media) and the control class (introduced using conventional press) after the pre-test was administered.

Abstract

Despite extensive research on Mark Twain's works, few studies have examined his portrayal of gender roles in "Diaries of Adam and Eve" through a feminist lens. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing Twain's representation of Eve and Adam, exploring how his writing both reflects and challenges societal beliefs centered around male power and control. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing feminist and gender theory to conduct a close textual analysis of "Diaries of Adam and Eve." The study focuses on language, tone, and themes used in Twain's portrayal of the two characters, contextualizing these elements within the historical and social framework of women's rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Findings reveal a nuanced depiction of gender roles that both conform to and subvert traditional expectations. Eve is portrayed as intelligent, curious, and capable, challenging conventional female stereotypes and reflecting an emerging understanding of women's rights and equality. In contrast, Adam's characterization aligns more closely with traditional notions of male authority and power. The study demonstrates a clash between traditional views on gender roles and modern perspectives on women's rights within Twain's work. It highlights Twain's critical examination of gender issues and his implicit support for women's equality, contributing to our understanding of his progressive stance on gender roles. This research provides valuable insights into Twain's subtle commentary on societal norms and his contribution to early feminist discourse through literature.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This activity explores the implementation of integrated skills in English language learning and the incorporation of website-based learning media at the Excelsis Deo Manado Community Learning Activity Center (PKBM). The research addresses challenges in English education, including low student motivation, conventional teaching methods, and limited use of learning media. An integrated skills approach using children's literature is proposed to enhance language proficiency and cultural awareness. To support this method and overcome media limitations, the study introduces training on creating website-based learning media for teachers. This training covers web design, content management systems, and interactive element creation, aiming to produce engaging online learning environments. The combination of integrated skills teaching and modern, website-based learning media is expected to significantly improve students' English language skills and overall learning experience. This approach not only addresses current educational challenges but also bridges the gap between traditional pedagogy and contemporary learner needs, while providing older teachers with opportunities to adapt to new educational technologies. Keywords: Integrated skills, Website-based learning media, Students and Teacher Training, Children's literature.
