Abstract

Species literacy and species identification skills are important to protect diversity and are issues in Sustainable Development Education. Fear of animals, especially herpetofauna, makes students avoid them and makes it difficult to study them. Based to the literature study, citizen science has the potential to solve this problem. This study aims to determine the impact of citizen science on species literacy, species identification skill, and fear of herpetofauna. This study included 44 biology education students from PGRI Silampari University who were studying Vertebrate Zoology classes. The data on species literacy was obtained using essay questions. Reports provided information on species identification skills. A questionnaire was used to collect fear data on the herpetofauna. The instrument used was declared valid and reliable. Species identification ability data was analyzed based on species resulting from citizen science activities. Species literacy data were analyzed descriptively and using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. Literacy increase data is calculated using the N-Gain Score. The results obtained show that 1) Species literacy data after the Wilcoxon test obtained sig. <0.05. The N-gain analysis obtained was 0.72 in the high category. 2) The herpetofauna identification data was 71.23%, indicating that students skills are passable in identifying species. The results of citizen Science activities showed that a maximum of 17 species were caught and a minimum of 6 species; 3) The Wilcoxon test revealed a significant difference in fear of herpetofauna (sig. < 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that Citizen Science significantly increases students' species literacy, identification abilities and reducing students' fear of herpetofauna.        Keywords: citizen science, species literacy, species identification skill, herpetofauna.

Abstract

Abstract

Fish diversity in the Lakitan River is not well recorded, even though the data is important to add information about the diversity of freshwater fish in Indonesia. This study aims to study fish composition and ecological index in the Lakitan River. The study was conducted in the Lakitan River, Musi Rawas Regency, South Sumatra Province. The method used was the survey method. The direct sampling was done at 5 stations, the numbering of stations followed the direction of the river from upstream to downstream. The data at each station are tabulated based on species, family and order. Data analysis in-cludes a diversity index, evenness index, dominance index, and sim-ilarity index. The fish caught during the study were 418 individuals, which were identified into 20 species and 11 families. Barbonymus gonionotus is the most captured species in the Lakitan River. Cypri-nidae is the most captured family (9 species). The highest diversity index was found at station 5, with the number of fish collected was 16 species. The evenness index at 5 stations showed the equivalent species distribution and stable communities. The domination index at 5 stations were at, low category. The similarity index between sta-tions in Lakitan River which ranging from 0.65 – 0.97. These results indicate that fish diversity in the Lakitan River medium biodiversity.

Abstract

Thehift in the learning paradigm emphasizes the importance of active student involvement through project-based learning. This research was conducted at PGRI Silampari University with 32 students as research subjects. The problem of this research is how the data on process skills, learning outcomes and perceptions of Biology Education students at PGRI Silampari University after project-based learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the data on process skills, learning outcomes, and student perceptions after learning with a project-based learning model. This research method is a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The research instruments are observation sheets, tests, and questionnaires. The results of this study are that students achieve learning outcomes in the high category after the implementation of Project-based learning, data on students' science process skills, namely observation indicators obtained 75.25%, interpretation 67%, classification 75%, experimental planning 75%, use of tools 81.25%, predicting 77%, application of concepts 80%, communicating 100%. The average score obtained was 78.75% with a high category. Student learning outcomes in the Animal Development Course show that in general the final achievement is in the good category. Based on the final grades of 32 students, the highest score was 95.4, while the lowest was 65, with an overall average score of 78.85, which is categorized as Good. The conclusion of this study is that most students were able to achieve learning outcomes well, acquire meaningful new knowledge through problem-solving, and think critically
