Abstract

This study examines signs, myths, and cultural ideology in three Muna fables—Karambau Kainsedodo, Karambau bhe Bhiku, and Tula-tulano Alaga-alaga bhe Abhiku-abhiku—through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework. It aims to identify the sign structures embedded in the narrative elements of the fables, analyze their denotative and connotative meanings, and interpret the myths and cultural ideologies naturalized in the texts. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study draws on documented Muna fable texts as its primary data and applies close reading and semiotic interpretation. The units of analysis include characters, actions, objects, and events functioning as dominant signs in the narratives. The findings show that the three fables operate through layered signification. At the denotative level, they present simple events such as abduction, competition, and transformation. At the connotative level, these events and characters symbolize power, intelligence, obedience, and moral consequence. At the mythic level, the fables naturalize cultural ideologies related to social hierarchy, collective intelligence, and obedience to customary norms. The study concludes that Muna fables function as ideological cultural texts that reproduce the social values and worldview of the Muna.

Abstract

This study discussed the perlocutionary act performed in the John Wick movie based on the theory of Qiang. The aim of the study is to determine the types of perlocutionary acts used in the movie through the main character’s utterances. The descriptive-qualitative method was applied to the research method. Techniques of data collection were carried out by searching, downloading, reading, watching, and coding the data. Techniques of data analysis were conducted by presenting, describing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions. The findings of the study show that perlocutionary acts really exist in the movie and are applied by the main character in order to influence others. There were 11 pieces of data found, which included four types of perlocutionary acts used by John Wick as the main character in the movie. Perlocutionary act serves as the effect of utterances from the speaker to the hearer, intentionally or unintentionally. Among the four types of perlocutionary acts, type 1 is the most dominant type because the speaker's utterance can be clearly understood by the hearer so that the expected effect of the utterances can be realized. Keywords: movie, perlocutionary act, pragmatic.

The main source of the data are the utterances of both vice Presidents’candidates which contain violation of maxim and implicature. The result shows that during the debate, there were 10 data of maxim quantity, 3 data of maxim quality, 6 maxim of relevance, and 1 data of maxim of manner. Violation of the maxim of quantity is the most common in the debate. because the candidates giving answers that seem exaggerated to, giving answers that are somewhat not so clear and irrelevant answers to distract the public. It also reveals that generalized conversational implicature is dominant used because political communication is highly context-dependent, and politicians frequently need to convey nuanced messages without being too direct.
