Abstract

This study explores the representation of colonial law in 19th-century literary texts, examining how these works reflect and critique the colonial legal system. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, the research focuses on how colonial law influenced various aspects of indigenous life, including social, cultural, and economic spheres. The study identifies key themes such as colonial law as a tool of oppression, resistance against colonial law, social stratification reinforced by colonial law, and law as a symbol of colonial power. Through literary works like "Hikayat Siti Mariah," "Hikayat Abdullah," and "Syair Perang Mengkasar," the study reveals how these texts serve as both a mirror and critique of colonial legal practices. By analyzing these narratives, the research highlights the role of literature as a social and legal archive, offering alternative perspectives to the official colonial narrative. The study also examines how literary texts document resistance and contribute to an ongoing critique of colonial law, remaining relevant for understanding postcolonial legal dynamics

Out of 8 negative types of politeness strategies, the mostly used were: adopting a customarily indirect stance, not taking compliance for granted, expressing pessimism about one’s capacity or willingness, to reduce the burden, as cited from  the FTAs as an illustration of a general principle. Then, three factors influenced the use of polite language, namely: social distance, power, and degree of impositions.

Abstract

This study explores the psychological themes of memory, guilt, and identity in Ian McEwan’s Atonement and Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending. Both novels delve into the malleability and unreliability of memory, examining how personal biases, emotional turmoil, and guilt distort characters' recollections of the past, thus shaping their identities. Through the characters of Briony Tallis and Tony Webster, the novels illustrate the profound psychological impacts of self-deception, regret, and the ongoing process of reconciling one’s past with their present self. This research analyzes how memory and guilt influence the characters’ actions and relationships, revealing that identity is not fixed but is instead an evolving narrative influenced by emotional and psychological revelations. By examining these themes, the study also highlights how contemporary literature can provide students with opportunities for psychological exploration and self-reflection.
