Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was motivated by the importance of parental role modeling in shaping children’s tolerant behavior within a pluralistic society. The study aimed to analyze parents’ exemplary attitudes in interfaith interactions and their implications for children’s behavior from the perspective of Islamic education. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a field research design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving Muslim families living alongside non-Muslim communities. Data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that parents’ exemplary behavior in building harmonious relationships with non-Muslims had a positive influence on children’s behavioral development. Children tended to demonstrate tolerant attitudes, politeness, respect for differences, and the ability to establish positive social relationships within their environment. In the perspective of Islamic education, these behaviors are aligned with the values of tasamuh, ukhuwah insaniyah, and hablum minannas, which emphasize the importance of noble character in social life. In addition, the study found that children who were consistently exposed to positive interfaith interactions within the family environment developed stronger social adaptability and greater openness toward diversity. The findings also indicate that family-based character education through parental role modeling can serve as an effective strategy for fostering social harmony and strengthening inclusive attitudes among children in multicultural communities. This study confirms that parental role modeling serves as an effective medium of social education in shaping children’s tolerant behavior in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

Female leadership in Islamic educational institutions currently stands at a crossroads between the demands of global modernization and the resistance of traditional religious interpretations. This phenomenon triggers a long-standing debate regarding the extent to which authority can be granted to women without infringing upon the boundaries of religious normativity. This article critically examines the phenomenon of female leadership in contemporary Islamic educational institutions by analyzing the dialectical tension between historically inherited religious normativity and the growing demands for gender equality in both global and national discourses. Employing a critical-hermeneutic approach to religious texts alongside a multidisciplinary literature review, this study maps three primary arenas of debate: (1) classic fiqh interpretations versus contextual reinterpretations regarding female leadership; (2) the empirical reality of female leadership in madrasahs, pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools), and Islamic higher education institutions; and (3) the structural-cultural barriers that restrict the actualization of female leadership despite the absence of absolute theological prohibitions. The findings indicate that obstacles to female leadership in Islamic educational institutions stem predominantly from patriarchal socio-cultural constructions embedded within religious interpretations rather than from Islamic doctrine itself. The maqashid al-shari'ah approach which emphasizes justice and public interest along with the contextual hermeneutics developed by Muslim feminists such as Amina Wadud and Nasaruddin Umar, offers a robust theological foundation to legitimize female leadership. This article concludes that the transformation of female leadership in Islamic educational institutions requires simultaneous reforms: hermeneutical (recontextualization of interpretations), structural (affirmative institutional policies), and pedagogical (gender-based leadership curricula).

Abstract

The internalization of religious values in adolescents cannot be separated from the religious education process in the environment where the students are located. For this reason, this study aims to explain how to internalize religious values in students in rural and urban Madrasah Aliyahs on Lombok Island. This study employed a descriptive, phenomenological, documentary, and understanding qualitative research approach. To photograph the two poles of two distinct locations, i.e., urban and rural madrasahs on Lombok Island, with specified categories, the study's setting took two extreme points in sampling madrasahs. In-depth interviews, observation, and documentation were used as data collection methods. Purposive sampling, meanwhile, was utilized to select the sources. The findings highlighted that the internalization of religious values was implemented in the classroom learning and religious activities in the madrasahs' internal and external environments. In urban madrasahs, a structural-functional approach with several characteristics was used as a tool for helping students internalize Islamic religious values. Madrasahs in rural regions, on the other hand, put more emphasis on a cultural approach with flexible, dynamic, and adaptive characteristics where education takes into account cultural aspects and societal values. Consequently, a more persuasive approach was applied in rural madrasahs
