Abstract

Abstract

With the development of new media, there is a great opportunity for society to become more involved in environmental issues. However, previous research still shows a significant gap: most studies focus on the use of social media as a source of information, whereas the mechanisms used by new media to shape significant engagement, from awareness to collective action, are not well understood. Additionally, as most research has been conducted in the context of developed countries, the dynamics of digital participation in developing countries, such as Indonesia, are less well represented. By contrast, the State of the Art (SOTA) shows a shift from linear communication models to patterns of “collaborative action” and “networked collaboration,” in which people work together through digital platforms using personalized stories, virtual communities, and citizen data. This study conducted a systematic literature review using a descriptive-qualitative approach. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) principles and environmental communication matrix theory were used in the screening process; the Theory of Planned Behavior, Affordances Platform, and Theory of Social Impact were combined to create a thematic analysis. The relationship between new media features, the way user interactions occur, and the emerging forms of environmental participation became the focus of the analysis. The synthesis results show that new media can function as a communication ecosystem that accelerates the dissemination of environmental information, strengthens social norms that support the environment, and expands participation—from symbolic actions, such as sharing content, to substantive actions, such as donations, reporting environmental conditions, digital campaigns, and community collaboration. However, significant challenges, such as disparities in digital literacy, algorithmic bias, information polarization, and the lack of online participation, leading to offline actions with real impact, were also found. To optimize the use of new media as a driver of sustainable environmental action, this study emphasizes that a more inclusive digital communication model, evidence-based content strategies, and cross-actor collaboration are necessary.

Abstract

Abstract

Tourism villages are promoted as a community-based rural development strategy in Indonesia, yet participatory communication practices vary despite similar policy frameworks. This study examines: (1) how individual characteristics influence participatory communication; (2) how media exposure affects participatory communication; and (3) how stakeholders’ roles shape participatory communication in Alamendah and Cibiru Wetan Tourism Villages. Using a post-positivist paradigm and a mixed-methods Sequential Explanatory design, quantitative data from 77 respondents in each village were analyzed using PLS-SEM and complemented with in-depth interviews. he study compares Alamendah Tourism Village, which represents a dialogical–relational governance model characterized by strong local leadership and embedded collective reflection, and Cibiru Wetan Tourism Village, which represents a procedural–operational model marked by institutional integration and centralized coordination. The findings demonstrate that individual characteristics and stakeholders’ roles significantly influence participatory communication in Alamendah but not in Cibiru Wetan, while media exposure shows no significant effect in either case. The results indicate that participatory communication is determined less by structural strength or media intensity and more by how communicative authority and dialogical spaces are distributed and institutionalized in governance practices. Conceptually, the study highlights a relational understanding of participatory communication, emphasizing dialogical space and institutionalized reflection as core determinants of participatory depth.

Abstract

This study departs from the observation of the use of digital applications in village forest management, where women are more active in data collection and communication, reflecting the beginning of gender role transformation in village forest management in Kuala Indragiri Sub-district, Indragiri Hilir District. It investigates how digitalization affects women’s participation in village forest management institutions (VFMI) and how sociocultural norms shape the gender digital divide. Using a mixed-methods case study in two mangrove coastal villages - Sapat and Sungai Piyai Village - the research combines surveys, in-depth interviews, participant observation, meaning that the higher the gender digital divide, the lower the role of women in institutions. Men dominating technical applications such as Avenza Maps (mapping), while women limited to administrative or communication tools WhatsApp and KoboToolbox (online surveys). Although limited, women's involvement in training and the use of digital applications is beginning to open space for recognition of their strategic role in village forest governance, reflecting the potential for gender transformation. Affirmative and intersectional strategies are needed, to minimize the reproduction of existing gender gaps. This study contributes to the discourse on inclusive digital transformation by highlighting the importance of overcoming structural and cultural barriers in social forestry programs. The findings also have the potential to be replicated in other coastal communities that face similar challenges in digitalization and gender inequality.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of beneficiary characteristics, media exposure, and the role of facilitators on community empowerment in a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. The research was conducted in the Internet Desa Digital program implemented by PT Tirta Investama in Ciherang Village, Caringin District, Bogor Regency. This CSR initiative focuses on improving digital access, digital literacy, and community economic empowerment through internet-based activities in rural areas. A survey method was employed to collect data from community members who benefited from the program. Data were obtained through structured questionnaires distributed to respondents and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis to examine the influence of the independent variables on community empowerment. The findings show that media exposure and the role of facilitators significantly influence community empowerment, while beneficiary characteristics do not have a significant effect. Media exposure plays an important role in increasing public awareness and understanding of the program through the frequency, intensity, and duration of information dissemination. Meanwhile, the role of facilitators functions as a bridge between the company and the community by providing training, technical assistance, and participatory communication that support the community in utilizing digital technology. The Internet Desa Digital program contributes to strengthening digital literacy, improving economic opportunities, and enhancing community participation in village development. Keywords: corporate social responsibility, media exposure, facilitators, community empowerment, digital village.
