Abstract

Folktales function not only as entertainment but also as cultural mechanisms for transmitting values and legitimizing social norms. However, structural studies of Kalimantan folklore, particularly those applying Vladimir Propp’s morphological approach, remain limited. This gap indicates the need for systematic analysis to reveal the narrative patterns underlying local folktales. This study aims to analyze the narrative structure of the Dayak Benuaq folktale Pohon Berdaun Kain using Vladimir Propp’s morphology. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a textual analysis design. The data were obtained from the book Cerita Rakyat Kabupaten Kutai Barat, published by the East Kalimantan Language Center. The results show that only 9 out of Propp’s 31 narrative functions are realized, forming a double-move narrative pattern. The structure develops from the resolution of personal conflict to the establishment of collective moral legitimacy through the distribution of magical agents, transformation, and punishment. Several spheres of action experience reduction and shifts, including the absence of the false hero function and the symbolic transformation of the princess and father roles. These findings demonstrate that Propp’s morphology is adaptive and relevant for analyzing Indonesian folklore, particularly in revealing how narrative structures function as mechanisms for reproducing social values. This study contributes to the development of folklore studies and structuralism by providing empirical evidence from the Dayak Benuaq cultural context.

Abstract

This study examines the cultural values contained in the folktale Larangan Mersapik through a literary anthropology approach. The main problem of this research is how cultural forms are represented in the story and how they reflect the community’s belief system and social life. This study aims to identify and analyze the cultural elements and cultural manifestations reflected in the folktale as a representation of local wisdom. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literary anthropology approach. Data was obtained through documentation techniques by examining narrative units in the folktale that represent cultural values, social norms, belief systems, and traditional knowledge. The analysis is based on Koentjaraningrat’s concept of cultural forms, which includes ideal culture (values, ideas, and norms), social activities (patterned social actions), and physical culture (artifacts). The results show that the folktale Larangan Mersapik reflects three interconnected forms of culture. The ideal form is reflected in the belief that Mersapik is a spiritual entity related to ancestral spirits and environmental balance. The activity form appears in collective social actions such as customary deliberations and ritual ceremonies conducted to restore social harmony. Meanwhile, the physical form is represented through ritual objects and traditional tools that function not only as practical objects but also as symbolic media connecting humans with the spiritual world. These findings indicate that the folktale serves as a cultural medium that preserves traditional knowledge, moral values, and ecological awareness within the community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the effect of digital learning media use on strengthening the digital literacy of eighth-grade students at SMP Al Islam Boarding School, Cirebon, in Indonesian language learning through drama texts. The research was conducted during the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The participants were 25 students from Class VIII D, selected through purposive sampling. A quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was employed, supported by qualitative data from classroom observation and teacher interviews within a sequential explanatory framework. The primary instrument was a digital literacy questionnaire administered in two stages, pre-test and post-test, measuring four dimensions of digital literacy: digital skill, digital ethics, digital safety, and digital culture. The treatment involved integrating YouTube as a video display medium for drama performances and Google Search Engine as a reference source for collaborative scriptwriting tasks. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics in Microsoft Excel, while qualitative data were analysed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed an increase in the mean digital literacy score from 61.4 to 68.16, with the proportion of students in the High category rising sharply from 24% to 76%, and no students remaining in the Low category following the intervention. Qualitative findings further confirmed increased student enthusiasm and active engagement throughout the learning sessions. It is concluded that integrating digital learning media significantly and positively strengthens students' digital literacy within the boarding school context.

Abstract

This study investigates how East Kalimantan folktales can be integrated into Indonesian language and literature learning to strengthen character education. This study aims to achieve two objectives: (1) to identify and analyze character values embedded in East Kalimantan folktales, and (2) to examine how these values can be translated into learning activities. This study employs a qualitative narrative-ethnographic design, focusing on folklore in three regencies (West Kutai, East Kutai, and Kutai Kartanegara) in East Kalimantan. The data were analyzed through content analysis and interactive model, supported by source and method triangulation. The findings show that the folktales consistently articulate character values related to the self (responsibility, perseverance, sincerity, gratitude, humility), to others (social concern, cooperation, justice, empathy, respect for human dignity), and to divinity (religiosity and devotion), which are narratively modeled through characters’ actions, decisions, and dialogue. These values can be systematically integrated into learning objectives, materials, activities, and assessment through folklore-based reading, discussion, dramatization, reflective writing, value clarification, and rubric- and portfolio-based evaluation. The study concludes that East Kalimantan folklore constitutes pedagogically robust core content for contextual, narrative-based character education in language and literature classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of adolescent social problems in the novel Areksa by Ita Kurniawati. The novel portrays various adolescent issues, including family conflict, interfaith romantic relationships, and the influence of peer group subculture in the process of identity formation. This study aims to describe the forms of adolescent social problems presented in the novel and to analyze their relationship with social realities through the perspective of the sociology of literature proposed by Ian Watt. This research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis. The data consist of quotations of dialogues and narrative passages in the novel that reflect adolescent social problems. Data were collected through a literature study using reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three major forms of adolescent social problems: family dysfunction that leads to communication breakdown within the domestic sphere, the dynamics of interfaith romantic relationships influenced by social and religious norms, and peer group subcultures that function as alternative spaces for adolescent identity formation. These findings indicate that Areksa functions not only as a work of entertainment but also as a reflection of the social realities experienced by contemporary adolescents shaped by family dynamics, social norms, and peer group subcultures.

Abstract

This research aims to examine in depth the construction of alternative masculinity in Tere Liye’s novel Janji through a sociology of literature perspective, which examines the reciprocal relationship between literature and social reality. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The research data consist of words, phrases, and sentences representing gender elements, with the primary data source being the text of the novel Janji (2021). Data were collected through a literature review and note-taking techniques, followed by in-depth textual analysis to dissect the social dimensions within the text. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the main character, Bahar, represents an alternative masculinity that prioritizes empathy, social solidarity, and moral responsibility, while simultaneously deconstructing the dominance of hegemonic masculinity, typically associated with violence and dominance. The implications of this research contribute to the development of gender studies in Indonesian literature and offer new perspectives in literary education regarding the dynamic nature of gender construction. By applying Connell’s masculinity theory, this research proves that the figure of Bahar represents an alternative masculinity model relevant for integration as progressive Indonesian language and literature learning materials.
