The purpose of this study is to explain the formula of MOOD analysis realized in grammar and to describe the speakers' mood in the application of the MOOD analysis in Indonesia's covid-19 vaccine article from online newspaper. The main focus of this research is on descriptive text articles and MOOD structure. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, the author uses observation documentation as a technique to obtain and measure data. The data were obtained by applying the theory of Gerot and Wignell (1994). The researcher found 259 clauses from six texts which became data taken from various online news sources. In the formula, there are various types such as Subject + Finite (Tense), Subject + Finite (Do), Subject + Finite (Modal), Subject + Finite (Have) and Subject + Finite (To be). The most commonly found category is the use of Finite (Tense). In the mood of the speaker, it is found that the speaker expresses certainty, possibility, uncertainty, obligation and advice. What most of the speakers said was certainty. In the analysis also found several categories of modalities, which after that can be included in the degree of modality, namely high, medium, and low. Because the limitations of this study are in a declarative, all clauses are statements that function to convey information from the author to the reader.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the challenges faced by English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta in achieving formal language proficiency, with a particular emphasis on vocabulary development as a crucial component of communicative English proficiency in academic writing. The research seeks to identify how vocabulary limitations hinder students' ability to construct formal, accurate, and contextually appropriate expressions in their essays. Methodology: This study analyzes ten student essays purposively selected from academic writing tasks. The analysis framework was adapted from Hymes' (1972) and Canale and Swain's (1980) communicative competence model, focusing on clarity, vocabulary use, formal register, and identified challenges. Results: Findings indicate that students generally demonstrate communicative clarity but struggle with lexical depth and formality. While their ideas are coherently expressed, most rely on basic vocabulary and exhibit inconsistent control over academic register. Occasional attempts at lexical sophistication were observed but were not consistently sustained, reflecting transitional proficiency between informal and academic discourse. Applications/Originality/Value: This study highlights the essential role of vocabulary enrichment and register awareness in developing communicative proficiency in academic writing. Its originality lies in analysing how vocabulary-related challenges specifically affect students' ability to use English formally in written contexts, offering pedagogical insights for enhancing academic vocabulary instruction and formal writing competence in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and classify the language styles of the main character in the film Flipped (2010) and to determine the dominant style using Martin Joos’ (1967) language style theory. The study employs a qualitative, descriptive method. The data comprise 17 utterances made by the main character, collected through repeated observation, transcription, and coding. The analysis follows Joos’ five style categories: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The results show that the main character uses three of the five language styles: the intimate style (7 utterances, 41.2%), the casual style (6 utterances, 35.3%), and the consultative style (4 utterances, 23.5%). No examples of frozen or formal language styles were found; the predominant language style is intimate style, characterized by elliptical structure, high emotional intensity, and the assumption of shared knowledge. This dominance reflects the emotional depth, psychological reflection, and involvement of the main character in intimate personal relationships-elements appropriate for the demanding film genre. The study confirms that the social context, the status of the interlocutor, and the communicative intention suggest a systematic relationship. It contributes to this analysis by applying Joos’s model, which focuses on individual characters within cinematic discourse.

Abstract

This study investigates and explores the multifaceted interplay between the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations in second language learning (L2) contexts among senior Islamic high school students (MA) learning English as a foreign language in one Islamic Boarding School in Surakarta. Since student achievement is correlated with motivation, it is important in an educational setting. This study employs a qualitative methodology, allowing the researcher to use interviews and observation as two methods of gathering data. Intrinsic motivation among high school students in English language learning and comprehension is the crucial thing although extrinsic motivation has an influence on learning English. Factors influencing intrinsic motivation included are related to their understanding that English is crucial for achieving higher educational goals and their desire to apply English in daily conversations, enjoyment of learning experiences, positive, and supportive classroom environment. Although extrinsic motivation is also essential for students to appreciate their personal growth gaining proficiency in English helps one find an acceptable employment opportunity, importance of good grades in exams, and the Language Task Force (SATGAS BAHASA) also plays a significant role as an extrinsic motivator for both students and the institution in one of Islamic modern boarding school. A balanced interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is complex but is essential for successful language learning. Extrinsic rewards can initially boost motivation, but intrinsic interest sustains long-term commitment in second language learning.
