Abstract

This research identifies students’ lexical errors in translating English text into Indonesian at Open University (Universitas Terbuka). The lexicon is essential in a translation. A good and acceptable translation should be able to successfully render the message of the source language into the target language by using the appropriate lexicon. The incorrect lexical choice will distort the source language's message. A translation test was administered to 35 students as part of the data collection process. The finding shows some students wrongly order the word in a sentence as the  result  of  word  by  word  translation  and  they  translate  it  using  dictionary and translation  machine like  Google  translate  so  that  it  still  has  errors  in  sentence  or  word. In addition, some of the students translate English text into Indonesian word by word. So that the translation did not correspond with the meaning of the text. Even though they used a dictionary, but they did not understand the text perfectly.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the oral semantic errors made by students during their English oral presentations and to classify these errors according to the categories defined by Al-Shormani and Al-Sohbani's (2012), adapted from James' (1998) error classification theory. This study uses qualitative descriptive analysis method. The study’s population consisted of approximately 50 6th-semester English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang, with a sample size of 14 students from class 6A1, who were scheduled to perform their oral presentation. The data collection techniques used are observation and documentation. Data analysis involves several steps: identifying semantic errors, categorizing the collected semantic error, describing the corrected versions of these semantic errors, and concluding with a descriptive analysis of the semantic errors. The findings of this study found that among the fifteen semantic errors found in students’ oral presentations, lexical choice errors were the most frequent, totaling 8 errors (53%). Collocation and formal misformation had the lowest occurrence, each with only 1 error (7%). Additionally, lexical-grammatical choice errors accounted for 3 instances (20%), while formal misselection accounted for 2 errors (13%) in the study. Keywords: oral presentation, semantic, semantic error

Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research employs a case study design at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, document analysis, classroom observations, and focus group discussions. Key findings indicate significant improvements in writing, critical thinking, and speaking confidence. The majority of students (80%) reported enhanced writing abilities, while 70% of midterm exam scores reflected strong performance in grammar, vocabulary, and coherence. Despite these gains, some students highlighted the need for more support in foundational language skills. Abstract

Language stands out as the primary and most crucial tool for communication, essential in everyday life. It includes both spoken and written forms, such as words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs, reflecting the diverse cultures of humanity. The study of linguistics is vital for language development, with phonology, morphology, semantics, and syntax each playing a significant role. Semantics, in particular, focuses on the meanings conveyed through speech and writing, which is fundamental for effective communication. Leech (1974) describes meaning as the concept or thought transferred from a speaker to a listener through language. Instagram, a popular social media platform, enhances communication through photos, videos, and captions. Users engage actively by leaving comments, which can be either supportive or critical. This study applies Leech's theory of the seven types of meaning—conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic—to examine Instagram captions. Given Instagram's widespread use, especially among college students, its features enable concise message sharing, making it an effective platform for exchanging meanings. Captions add context, express emotions, and convey situational information using various moods and illocutionary acts. This descriptive qualitative study, titled "Analysis of Semantic Meanings Found in TED Talks Instagram Captions," explores these semantic elements, enhancing our understanding of language use on social media and its impact on digital communication.
