Abstract

Deaf individuals are people with hearing impairments, classified as either completely deaf or hard of hearing, which hinders verbal communication. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 430 million people worldwide, including 34 million children, experience hearing loss. In Indonesia, the most commonly used communication method among the deaf community is the Indonesian Sign System (SIBI). With advancements in technology, artificial intelligence methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have been widely used for image processing and pattern recognition to support communication for the hearing impaired. However, previous studies have shown limitations in data quantity, class coverage, and a lack of evaluation involving lightweight architectures such as MobileNet, particularly for SIBI recognition. This research aims to develop a sign language classification model using CNN with the MobileNet architecture. The dataset used consists of 5,720 SIBI hand gesture images, including manually collected samples for the letters "J" and "Z." Preprocessing involved image resizing and data augmentation to prevent overfitting. The model was trained for 30 epochs. Evaluation results indicate that MobileNet achieved an accuracy of 74.15%, significantly outperforming the baseline CNN model, which only reached 19%. These results demonstrate that MobileNet is more efficient in recognizing visual patterns in sign language and offers a practical solution for implementation on resource-constrained devices. Nevertheless, further improvements are needed to enhance classification performance across all alphabet letters.

Abstract

The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is a large mammal protected species and categorized as endangered according to the IUCN Red List. Habitat management includes control and regulation forest vegetation, open areas, water sources, salting sites, and resting areas for good animal welfare. The Seblat Elephant Training Center (SETC) is a conservation area to protect the Sumatran Elephant from extinction and is an ecotourism destination. This study aimed to analyze the welfare level and management of the Sumatran elephant in the SETC. This research used structured interview method to determine the indicators of the animal welfare level. Calculation of feed productivity and secondary data collection were used to improve the welfare level of the Sumatran Elephant. The research result stated that the welfare level of Sumatran elephant was classified as excellent (the implementation achievement value is 74.3%). In addition, the development of observations suggests that freedom from environmental discomfort needs to be improved by providing quarantine cages and reproductive cages to support natural behavior. Environmental conditions also support the welfare level of the Sumatran elephant.  In conclusion, this facility is properly conducive to the welfare of Sumatran elephants.

Abstract

Primates, wild animals often experience co-existence with humans; in this case, they share habitats. This co-existence certainly raises the potential for human-primate interactions, including positive or negative interactions. One example of negative interaction presents the phenomenon of human-primate conflict. In comparison, one example of positive interaction can be found in the ethnoprimatology phenomenon with the role of a particular ethnic community. This study briefly reviews how primate-human interactions are negative and positive (ethnoprimatology) in managing primates that live in co-existence and share their habitat with humans. The study of the proposed strategy in the persistence presented in this study focuses on the conservation of primates and does not harm humans who co-exist.
